Posted By: Jim Clarke
Since I have no clue on Old Judges. There is a local collector that wants to sell me a King Kelly N-172 with him in the Boston Uniform with a glove on catching a ball. His head is looking a little right in the PIC. I do not have it to scan. Is this a common or tougher variation? I know of the portrait one and him holding a bat. The card is in VG condition... I put a 2K value on it? Thanks JC

Posted By: Chris
But most of the N172 Kelly cards I have seen show him with a bat. I would think the pose you described is at least tougher than the Kelly-bat poses. At any rate, an OJ Kelly in vg condition (assuming it is a good image) is worth 2k regardless of pose...

Posted By: Tom Boblitt
$2K is a little strong for a VG Kelly. I would think more like $1K-$1.2K is closer. Just my opinion............

Posted By: Julie Vognar
By the way, hullo. My computer's been broken since last Thursday. Amen to Ben's interest in a VG Kelly for 1.2K.

I have never seen an OJ Picture of Kelly catching a ball. Only the two batting poses (which are mirror images of eachother I think), (of which I have one) and two portraits, one in which he looks crosseyed and is wearing a hat of some sort, and one in a dark uniform with "Chicago" on it (of which I have one).

YO JAY M!

Posted By: prewarsports
I bought a Kelly Chicago Portrait last year from Terry Knouse for $1,000 in about VG+ and I was elated at that price. I sold it to Kit Young at the same show for $2,400 and you know he was going to raise the price from there or he wouldn't have bought it. If it is a clean VG with a nice appearance, $2,000 is not a bad price for a collector but I think that is what it is worth and it probably isn't any kind of a great bargain, but a fair price. I agree that $1200 is a low price.

Posted By: Judge Dred
Jim,

I hope the scan comes out ok. The scan is of 4 different King Kelly OJ poses. The three batting RH are the same (Boston uniform) but with different variations. The LH batting card is a very similar pose to the LH pose but it is different (Chicago uniform). Another pose has his hand on the bat that is standing next to him (Boston) and the last picture shows him ready to catch a ball (Boston uniform). Is the last picture the card which you might obtain? If it's different can you please provide a scan of it.

I'd hate to try and complete a run of N172 Kelly cards because the RH batting Kelly has three variations (same photo) and who's to know what other possible variations are lurking out there.

Posted By: Andy Baran
There are several other Kelly variations, including at least one other "with bat" variation, and I think there may be at least one other "fielding" variation.

Posted By: stutor
Not a regular poster and by no means an OJ expert, but I can offer a little info. Two of the three portrait poses show Kelly with a Chicago uniform...one with a hat and the other without. A very nice example of the 'Chicago without hat' recently sold for over $8K in Lew Lipset's auction. In the description he stated it was one of the two toughest Kelly poses. I purchased the Chicago portrait 'with hat' a little over a year ago on ebay for $1.1K (shown below).

I believe the third portrait pose is the same as the one pictured except the uniform says Boston instead of Chicago.
Posted By: Ben
Very similar to Julie's Kelly portrait, just a slight tilt in his body position a slight crop to the photo, and a slightly different hairdo. OH- and a team change too. These things matter - really!

Posted By: Tom L.
Is there a reason that Kelly has no 1888 card? Everything is 1887 or 1889. (No 1888 cards are listed in the World Index.)
