Shoeless Joe Jackson National Game

Posted By: <b>Dan Elsass</b><p>I ran across a Shoeless Joe Jackson National Game card today. The strange thing about the card are the corners. They are round, just as all the other National Games cards are, however, this one's corners have a bit of a larger roundness to them. I looked the card over and there is no evidence of trimming and each corner is consistant with the rest. I am sorry but I do not have a scan of the item, so please forgive. <BR><BR>Does anyone know of an instance where the game cards came with a more round corner as I am describing? Thanks, Dan.

I have compared the corners to other pictures of the set that I have been able to find, this one's corners all look rounder for a lack of a better word. As I said, tomorrow I will get a pic and you all can see what I am talking about.

Posted By: <b>hankron</b><p>The original National Game cards were made with an essentially defunct form of commercial printing called photoengraving (aka 'releif'). With a handheld microscope, photoengraving is easily identified.<BR><BR>The bottom half of the below linked page has a description with large pictures of what photoengraving looks like under the microscope. Both the back and the front of the National Game cards will have the dark rim around the printed ink as descriped.<BR><BR>Duly note, that on the page the section I mention is titled 'RELEIF' (and follows the first section called 'LITHOGRAPHY,' lithography being a different form of printing). Releif is another name for photongraving, and you can pretty much interchange the two words if that makes it simpler.<BR><BR><a href="http://cycleback.com/baseballcards/7.html" target=_new>http://cycleback.com/baseballcards/7.html</a><BR>

Posted By: <b>brian p</b><p>Besides the corners, which do seem to have a different degree radius than the ones I have seen, the card's borders seem a little large (maybe I am just imagining this), and the color appears too sepia...would be interesting to know what others think.<BR><BR>Brian

Posted By: <b>hankron</b><p>I agree that, from the image, the corners do not look good (charitably put) and the brown tone is atypical. But, if the card is going to be viewed in person, a microscope can act as arbiter.

Posted By: <b>Mike</b><p>Dan-<BR><BR>Are you collecting the set? <BR><BR>Send me an e-mail if you want scans of a real Jackson and a reprint. The reprints have larger rounded "corners" and typically have a jagged edge due to a poor cutting job. The photos of the reprints are also "browner" than the authentic cards. The word reprint should appear on the back of the card but people erase the word and dip the card in something to make the card appear older. I learned the hard way in the beginning.<BR><BR>I have all cards and reprints of this set if you need scans of any of them.
