Posted By: Joe_G.With 19th Century Only, Lipset, & Mastro over or soon to be over, who cares to share what they won? While I bid in all three, I can't say I won a single item. There were certainly some bidding wars going on in Lipset's auction such as the M116 Cy Seymour Trilogy which went for $16,677 ! Also quite a fight for the N172 King Kelly portrait with Chicago, to the tune of $8,136. Some very nice cards on both accounts. There were also some more attainable closing prices mixed in, so how did you fair? Also curious if anyone from this board won Lipset's lot #48, the N172 Kelly, Myers, and Richardson? Joe Gonsowski

I've HAD that gorgeous Kelly portrait (not in THAT condition, but pretty nice) for a couple of years, and I'm the only one who ever made a fuss over it...and that absolutely includes Bob Lemke (the "Chicago" designation being listed as significantly cheaper than the "Boston"). Oh: Cunningham is Evers; Ron Howard made some great movie in the last couple of years, and I can't for the life of me remember what it is. If you never saw "Happy Days," you'll live...long and prosper. Howard as Richie Cunningham in "Happy Days" looked a lot like Evers...

I bid on about 3-4 in last couple of days to levels that I thought were about 80-90% of retail and am 3-5 bids below what they finally sold for or are selling for. Their bids are becoming more and more difficult to believe. I think Alan Greenspan coind the phrase 'irrational exuberance' a little early and about the wrong thing.........

Posted By: Bill KaselOnly bid on two lots but wasn't even in the same galaxy for the final bid. I don't know about anyone else, but noticing that the Ruth & Wagner went for the same price, I would take a poor Wagner every day of the week and twice on Sunday over a PSA 8 Ruth.

Posted By: btfndguy1I did win two items: The E121 American Caramel Babe Ruth for $1298 and the 1914 Cracker Jack Cobb for $1948. Probably a little high on each but the way that the prices have been going up on the nicer vintage cards I feel that in the long run these will be worthwhile.

Posted By: Scott ForrestThe '33 and '34 World Wide gum sets are a good way to get a nice Ruth for a lot less than the '33 Goudeys. I had a '34 WWG of the yellow background Ruth and it looked almost identical to it's English-speaking cousin.

Posted By: Geoffrey LitwackHi Scott, Yeah, I think the WWG sets are seriously undervalued, especially considering how rare they are compared to their American cousins. I'm almost done with 1933 (well, now I am) and am girding myself for 1934. These cards are almost too new for this board!

I'm over half way home towards completing this set now, and I have the Ted Williams out of the way!!! Boy, how I wish I would have bid on the T216 Virginia Extra Jennings in the Lipset auction, as it went LOW (at least my in my opinion)!!! Don't worry, because my batting average will definitely suffer a trmendous blow in the Robert Edward auction - either that, or I will win all 7 or 8 lots I am bidding on (which will never happen)!!! Anyway, looks like SEVERAL lots went at bargain prices in the Lipset auction (aside from the T206's, which remain hot). Looks like Lipset and RE are where the few bargains are going to be!!!!!

I can't keep up with the inflating prices to know if it was a good buy now or 5 years from now. However, I'm glad you were able to win them at terrific prices! See, this is where those people who buy Wagners and Planks mess up - they could buy SEVERAL lots of super rare cards such as these two and end up making a much higher % return on their investment in two or three years when they get "tired" of a card and want to sell it!!!!!!! These will probably double or triple in value (especially at the prices you were able to acquire them at), while a Plank or Wagner sold down the road will be lucky to return 10-20% on the initial investment! Just my thoughts, but I TRULY believe you did well!
