Posted By: Bill Kasel

ust won this in an auction (e101 Bergen) and I noticed it appears to have a ghost image on the back (I don't have the card yet). Is this common in the e101 series? I tried checking into a few auctions on ebay, as well as on Pete's site but didn't find any. Any input is greatly appreciated.

Posted By: warshawlaw
looks like a mirror image to me, which indicates a dry sheet contacting a wet sheet.

That red ghost is the best one I've ever seen on a candy card. I cannot believe that anyone would not want to collect something like that. My prize ghosts are my 1948 Leaf Spahn with the red mirrored portrait back and my 1910 Pet Cigarettes Battling Nelson with a front ghost. wish I could post them. Anyone want to receive emails of them from me and do it for me????

Posted By: TBob
Tim- there is an E97 McConnell floating around (I sold it on eBay a while back) which has an identical back situation as your E93 Ames. I am not in to printing freaks so I sold it and bought a McConnell in better grade but it definitely IS interesting.

Posted By: Dave
The E93 could be bleedthrough or wet contact; both will be mirror image. A look with a bright light should answer this, perfect f/b alignment would suggest bleeding; imperfect alignment would guarantee wet ink transfer. This card is Ames, not Matty. The Matty card has similar pose and color, but has a green bottom.

I've reversed the Ames image (thanks Virtual Card Collection) to show what it would look like from behind, or as mirrored in a wet contact.

[edited to crop image]

Posted By: Brian C Daniels
NO Bill, this is NOT common on the E-101's but is most common on the E92 CROFT'S COCOA BACKS.....As far as the more common E-Caramel series go. The heavy black border on the reverse and darker, thicker stenciling must attribute to this on the Crofts issue.

Pete C would be able to confirm or not as should Tim S as both of them had had enough of these from several E-series to confirm my conclusion.I'm sure Scott B has had plenty to determine as well.
