Posted By: B Kaz
Hello everyone. I just found this board, and have now wasted about 4 hours of time I should have been working! I am fairly new to t206 colleting, however have been collecting baseball cards for over 20 years. You veterans of the board are providing a VERY valuable service to us "rookies". Thank you!

I have won one auction, and from seller [dugoutman] http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=31719&item=2717530439&rd=1 ... he has a lot of nice cards up for auction and may bid on more. Does anyone else have any experience with him? I haven't received the McQuillan yet to look it over.

Thanks again!

Posted By: Hankron
I have no knowledge about this seller positive or negative, and my sincere hope is you get a great card.

My advice rarely answers the question directly, but I would recommend that the beginer (or even advanced collector) avoid buying high graded T206s (Near Mint and above, and especially when Nrmt-Mt or Mint), Goudeys or such, except from sellers (dealer or collector) they know and trust or when the card is graded by PSA, SGC, etc. The rational being that ungraded Very Good cards are less likely to be deceptively trimmed or altered and, if they are, the trimming will be less detrimental to the card's value.
Posted By: B Kaz
I have purchased about 10 other lower end t206's over the past 2-3 months just to get a better feel for what they "should" look like, and to help in determining a fake from authentic.

Posted By: Hankron
Since you've already prudently obtained a variety of lower grade t206s, you likely should have no problem identifying if the card is fake or trimmed once you get in person. Due to the rather primative way the sheets were cut, trimming is usually obvious to someone familiar with the cards. I think this is a case where, after you've examined your eBay winning, you will be the best judge of the qualty of the seller.

Posted By: brueso
I have to say that the scan looks somewhat manipulated to me (those are VERY bright whites there)- so I'm curious whether the card in person would appear as bright.

Posted By: runscott
Manipulating scans is simple - here's a before and after. I created the second image completely from bits and pieces of the first one, with the goal of creating a fake cover to glue to a new binding I'm making for this guide. I changed the hue slightly on the second image so that when I printed it it translated to a more correct image of the actual book.

Note: even the "G" in "Guide" and the right-hand side of the "1891" seal were created from pieces of the original bitmap scan, all using paintbrush which is an extremely unsophisticated bitmap editor.

Posted By: Nick
I purchased a a pair of T206 commons from the seller. The images presented are changed a bit. The cards were described as Near Mint to Mint. They were in fact Ex-ExMint cards. The cards were still nice, I sent them to PSA(not back yet).

I guess what I am saying is that the pictures presented are enhanced.I did not feel mislead enough to leave negative feedback, but just enough so I would not buy again.

The seller is fine to work with shipping wise.

Posted By: John
I bought around $500.00 dollars worth of cards from “dugoutman” and was very unhappy with the result. Out of the 10 or so cards three had real bad wrinkles and some creasing. Also very interestingly enough was my McQuillan card, which came with major chipping on the right side and also a black dot on the left side. The seller did not mention any of the wrinkles or creasing in any of the cards. Even more interesting was that in his scan on the McQuillan the black dot was not visible. If you look at the scan of the card you can see where he airbrushed the card and went out of the line. It’s even off in the color of the border. When I emailed him he treated me like I just started collecting and did not know how to grade cards. He went on to explain and I quote “those are not creases but factory paper surface ridges which qualify as NrMt.Heres even more words of wisdom this to explain the hole in my card.
“The dot on the card, in the "Becketts" Baseball magazine, or "CSA" or"PRO”, makes the grade for how we described the card”. After many emails I just gave up and was tired of hearing excuses. I even asked if he had any more McQuillan’s better or worse I would be happy to pay the difference. I just did not want one with the chipping and black dot. He said he had none and tough luck. I saw your card on ebay last week and laughed and emailed him to ask about the card. No response to date. In short what he calls NrMt or MT is more like EX at best so bid accordingly. I hope this helps sorry to ramble but this stuff just gets me some times.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2701303950

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2701303209

Some Pictures of Yours and Mine Zoom in and enjoy the Airbrush on mine.

Posted By: B Kaz
Thanks for all the information. I guess if it does look too good to be true, more often than not it is. I am really looking forward to comparing the card shipped with the image and description given.

If I see a difference I will definitely leave a neutral feedback, as it will be partly my fault as he does not offer any returns. CAVEAT EMPTOR!!!

Posted By: runscott
...and it didn't take much time. Scan manipulation is simple - some sellers obviously just change their settings to whiten borders and sharpen details, while others "airbrush" flaws away. I created my example because I collect old books and wanted a new cover for this one - the 1 1/2 hrs it took to "restore" the cover is well worth it to me.

Posted By: B Kaz
I finally received my McQuillan (NM+) in the mail yesterday, and beyond a very small light stain in the lower right corner it appears to be a very nice card. The colors are better than what the scan depicted. Still, I would only grade it at EX/NM. I am planning on sending it to SGC and see what I get back. I am satisfied enough to leave positive feedback. dugoutman also sent along a trimmed (top & bottom) t206 as a bonus. It is just a common card, but the color centering (L/R), registration, and back are very nice. It was a nice gesture by him. Overall beyond taking a little while to get the card, I am happy with my transaction.
