Posted By: MichaelI was thinking of starting to work on collecting 1911 Gold Border T-205's. I'm not particularly desperate to get the NMT examples but just cards that are presentable. Any advice for a first time collector of Pre-War cards? Things to be aware of? I was considering registering it with PSA or SGC. I have been collecting cards from the 50's 60's and 70's for 15 years. Just never ventured to the real vintage stuff before. One thing I've learned with the things I've collected over the years is get knowledgeable before you start plunking down money :P

Easily the best looking vintage set out there and just enough rarities in the set to make it challenging, but not impossible for the casual collector. Fakes/reprints are pretty easy to spot in this set, especially in person. Unless you have a serious amount of cash to throw around, putting this set together in NM condition is almost impossible because the boarders chip so easily. There are plenty of people that post here that collect this set and will be a good source of info. Good luck on the set. Jay

Posted By: TBobThis is one of the few large sets around in which you can go ahead and buy that tough G/VG Collins variation (mouth open), for example, knowing you can be patient and find a better one down the road and sell your lower graded one for equal to or more than you paid for it. Almost all the tougher variations are like this. Being patient in putting together a nice set is the key. Jump on the lower graded really tough ones, like Joss and Barger partial and Graham Cubs and then sit back and wait. Good luck.

Posted By: ockdayMichael..this is a beautiful set and one that you can put together for the most part without too much trouble in VG-EX grade. I have found that some of the variations like Moran stray line and Gray stats on back are tough to find and expensive but I did manage to buy them on Ebay in the last year or so in VG. Also the cards that Tbob listed are also tough but are out there as well. As far as registering them goes, we all have our preferences. My preference is PSA as I have found that when I upgrade cards and sell my duplicates, I get a better price in a PSA slab. Good luck! Alan

Auctionstealer said I had copied the number wrong, so all I had was Ben's link. I bid $700--and was damned lucky I didn't have to PAY $700! I got it for $338. The Joss is a particularly nice card (and all T205 collectors want one), because there's a kind of memorial to him on the back, as he died earlier in the year of tubercular meningitis; also, the face is extremely expressive. But the item I bid so much on had a g-vg front, and a vg-ex (Hassen) back. A little too much. I was being literally shoved away from the computer because my housemate wanted to do yoga before he took his bath before he drove me to my psychology group. I was actually relieved when i got home to see i was only out $338. I have since been shown how to get "my e-bay" to send me an e-mail when a card i want comes up. <img src="/images/happy.gif" height=14 width=14>

Posted By: Brian HThere is that pesky Hoblitzell no stats card that pretty much breaks the bank regardless of condition. The last sale I heard about (and auction actually) was for $15K for an SGC VG specimen. OUCH !

Posted By: JulieType the name of card under main search on first ebay page. You get a page saying "0 results, etc." way over on the right, you'll see "save this search." Click on that. You'll be transported to "my ebay". Half way down, on the right hand side, you'll see a small blue "e-mail me." click on that. Then go just a bit further down, under the "e-mail me" and you'll see "submit." Click on that. IT REALLY WORKS!

Posted By: hench1Michael, you will find alot more product on ebay now than a couple of years ago. Some advocate snagging the HOFers first, as their price goes up more than the commons, but I think that the tough variations are the ones to focus on first, because the HOFers are in reasonably abundant supply. I would add A.P. Leifield and the Wallace no caps (1 line of stats and 2 lines of stats) to the above mentioned tough cards.
