Posted By: leon
Hey Folks,
In my never ending quest to help the hobby I called SGC today. I spoke to Derek Grady and Sean Skeffington. Both are execs and handle a lot of the day to day operations. I asked them about doing a set in the registry for "type" cards, not that I am partial or anything. I know there are a few other type card collectors out there and think it would be a neat thing. I am soliciting ways of doing one. My initial thoughts are pre-'42 sets (pre WWII)....If we can come up with something good I am almost sure they will do it. Anytime something like this gets thrown on the table there are things that might not have been thought about, hence this email. ALSO, what might the parameters be? ALL Zeenut years, ALL W cards?? etc etc ......please let your thoughts be known....best regards all

Posted By: Brian Daniels
about registering my Mello Mint set! All they need to do is add about 50 sets from pre-war in the drag down menu and away we go! pete can post five more sets in progress on the registry that are not yet listed and some of use can either compete or advertise via the registry for sets we would like to complete.I would hope that is part of the logic in addition to "show-n-tell".Heck some of the stories on the PSA site as to why people are compliing the sets is interesting. The affection for certain years we watched sports and cettain teams et is great fun and SGC should expand it.Maybe Leon and his hoard of type cards, can moderate it!

Posted By: TomW
I agree with Runscott. It just legitimizes that people are willing to pay for anything
"Vintage"
and should be categorized like every other rarity. My vintage cards,photos,cut-outs, are worth more to me than they are monetary. So I guess that proves that these paper-stock items/cards (thick or thin stock) are worth only as much as someone willing to pay for them like my T-206 commons. I'm gonna send my WW cut-outs in to get graded by Roy and AAA. Thanks

Posted By: Hankron
I assume you were joking about my dribble, because it wasn't. Many on this board complained to high heaven about PSA's registry-- calling it the biggest scam since One-Hour Martinizing. Suddenly, it's not such a bad idea when the pals at SGC start offering it .... It's no skin off my nose one way or the other, as I don't collect trading cards-- I just thought the turn of events was interesting.

I am only trying to allow myself and other CARD collectors more fun in our addiction...uh er hobby and it is a good business move for SGC. Please don't spoil it before it starts. You may take your baseball and go home if you wish. I have another one in my bat bag anyway regards all

Posted By: runscott
...that I don't understand your post. What's a "WW"?

I guess I need to telegraph my dry wit, especially when "Roy Huff wannabes" are reading the board (probably trying to learn new ways to disguise their crap as baseball cards).

Of course, it could be that I'm mis-reading the "Roy Huff phenomena" completely - perhaps his buyers, after being duped into spending their hard-earned dough on worthless paper scraps...er cut-outs, tend to sink into buyer's remorse, but then some of them, rather than waking up, eventually rationalize their ridiculous purchases. Perhaps part of the rationalization process involves buying more crap...yeah, this paper scrap really IS worth $119! - what a deal!...yeah, I'll buy more...

Posted By: runscott
AAA isn't professional. When you sell items that you grade yourself, and assign grades based on edges that you cut yourself with your own pair of scissors, all under the guise of it being two different organizations...no, you aren't professional - you are a thief.

Keep rationalizing, Bub - I don't have to since I collect legitimate items. And, yes, it is up to legitimate collectors to help police the hobby - otherwise people like you will continue to rip off novices in the hobby. And why do you and the other Roy Huff clones hide behind fake names? If you are part of Roy's AAA scheme, just admit it - if you are doing as great as you say you are, there is nothing to hide.

Also, I suggest you and your buds create on your own chat room - you can discuss such hot topics as: "scissors or x-acto knives? - another brain twister"...or..."how to tear pages out of library books without getting caught"
Posted By: Hankron
Leon, I don't have a personal opinion the registry, and wasn't offering one. I literally don't have two graded cards to rub together. I was merely reminding what many offers on this board has voiced on numerous times. I remember when Vorthian asked the board if he should register his Fro Joy set with PSA, and the majority were on him like crows on a june bug.

I know that you and Andy B. and Brian have fine collections, and don't begrudge you for wanting to show them off while supporting your favorite grader. However, from what I understand, Marshall Fogal can carry the #1 spots in both the PSA and SGC regestries simultaneously.

Posted By: Jay Miller
Leon---You love type card collecting; everyone on the board can see that. Why is it important to you to compete with other type card collectors in a public forum, ie. via a registry set? Do you really need that pat on the head from SGC that says yours is the third best (or even best) type card collection out there?

Posted By: Hankron
Andy, I was going to mention just Brian and Leon, but thought you might feel slighted if I left you out. I'm sure someone I didn't mention did feel slighted ....

Sorry to everyone for anything I said or didn't say, anyone I mentioned or didn't mention, for actions I took and didn't take, to PSA and SGC, MastroNet and Leland's, the Radical Right and Liberal Democrats, dogs and cats, fish and fowl. You're all beautiful and I wouldn't change you a bit, even if I could ... There, that finish my contribution in this thread.

Posted By: leon
I want one for the same reasons that I collect. Not to say "mine is better than yours" because I know it's better than some and not as good as others. Who cares about that? I don't. If folks think that that is my intention then I did not explain myself to start with. When I post pics of cards it is for the enjoyment of other collectors. IF you don't like "show and tell" with other folks that is fine. I like collecting. I like showing and comparing and telling and getting to know fellow "collect'oholics." I even enjoy it when you call me every week or so and vice versa. To ME that is what makes the hobby fun. I got over a lot of the ego stuff a few years back. You have one of the best OJ collections on earth. I would love to see a list and pics of it. If it were registered ( which I know it won't be as you don't even like the idea of grading companies) then I and others could see it. That is a shame to keep all of those beautiful masterpieces locked up....To me it is not about who has the best it's about sharing and having fun...in it's simplest form....that is all, although I am sure for many it is an ego thing... .....best regards

Posted By: RC_McKenzie
One of the reasons I prefer ebay over the phone order auction houses, is that I get to see who I'm bidding/competing against. Back in 1998, when I was a saucer-eyed, ebay greenback, I remember seeing an Old Judge common for under $50 that looked like it had been washed and dryed. I thought I'd pick it up on the cheap, as I'd never owned an Old Judge card before. I was the high bidder with 12 hours left. The next day, I realised that I had been "sniped" by J@sempratrading. I knew then that if I wanted any Old Judge cards I'd have to outbid sempratrading. It's like that old joke... you don't have to outrun the bear, you just have to outrun the other guy he's chasing.

A few months later, I bought a Connie Mack Old Judge Throwing from Jay Miller and didn't know what I had bought. I sold it on ebay at no reserve to fullcount who said that they had been looking for that card for a long time.

Posted By: leon
Hey Jimmie,
Thanks for the moral support on the board here. Hell, I really don't care if "mine is better than yours" or vice versa. Anyone that knows me knows better than that. I am genuinely interested in other peoples collections and, most of the times, happiness. I might have been egotistical 20 years ago but I don't think so now..These people are making me sick and I just wanted to try to help. Thanks folks....
best regards,
leon
ps..Hankron- sorry If I offended you.

Posted By: Brian Hodes
I think Leon's idea could probably be accomplished by simply having a Hall of Fame Registry like PSA's on SGC's -- for me the fun part of the registry might be to see which cards of which Hall of Famers collectors have with the grade being secondary at best.

(After if its just a matter of competition I can get some 1980-something commemorative King Kelly that would outgrade Leon's Four Base Hits).

Really, what would be neat would be to see specimens of HOFers from all kinds of scarce (and often uncompletable) sets such as the Four Base Hits etc.

Posted By: RC_McKenzie
The more cards that are viewable to the public, the better. If the registry has jpgs of the cards, I'm all for it.

I would rather own an SGC card than a PSA card, but I would rather sell a PSA card than a SGC card. I have it written in my will that my heirs should convert my 1974 Topps Lou Pinella SGC 96 to a PSA 9 before they cash it out on ebay.

Posted By: Jay Miller
Leon---I hear what you are saying but why do you need a registry set to accomplish this? Why not just post your cards on the net like Andy and some others do? That way you could share your collection with others and avoid the competition aspect of it.

Posted By: Jay Miller
I was going to say that I'm not sure what point Mr McKenzie was trying to make but that would be wrong. Actually, I am positive that I don't have a clue what he is saying. I kinda get that I outbid him in the last day on an off condition Old Judge card. However, the part about him buying an Old Judge Mack from me, not knowing what it was, and then selling it at what turned out to be a bad level sort of escapes me. If he didn't know what it was why did he buy it in the first place? If he didn't know what it was when he bought it it must have been a pleasant surprise when he found out it was a HOFer, and not only that, one of the best HOFers in the Old Judge set. So, after finding this out what does he do---the obvious, he sells it with no reserve. Help me out---what am I missing. And by the way, did I just watch OSU beat Miami or was I dreaming that also?

Posted By: leon
Having them in one place is nice. ALSO, I didn't even think about the aspect of others seeing what I still need and possibly helping. There are just way more positive than negatives. Again, it's one of those things that is rather benign. If folks don't want to participate (like Andy or you) that is fine too.....live and let live....regards

Posted By: RC_McKenzie
Jay:

I meant that I knew I was buying a good card, but at the time, I thought it popped up every other month.. I collected cards as a kid and started back up on ebay in 1998. I knew Mack was a legend of the game and Krause said it's value was whatever. I resold the card on ebay to buy other "good" cards that I later resold. 4 years later, I understand that I have not seen that card again on ebay. Aside: TBob is foaming at the mouth at that T207 estate sale on ebay right now.

Posted By: jay behrens
Having your site to show your collection is nice, but you are generally limited on the space you have (my site is maxed out and I don't even have half my Indian cards listed with pics yet), unless you buy commercial space. Besides, I would be willing to bet that SGC will get far more hits than a personal site ever would.

I need to go abck in and edit the descriptions I ahve on my registered sets and put a link to my personal site so people can see all the cards and not just the graded ones.

Jay
