Posted By: Robert
Matty dark cap. Looks nice but I can't afford it. But I figured one of my friends on the broad might like it. Posted By: Dan Mathewson
...and wondering about who graded it at Beckett...

The "corners" and "centering" grades, i think, were transposed. How can the centering be a 6 when the top of the picture is almost off the card itself? And, the corners actually appear more like 6 or 6.5 than 4.5, the bottom corners really look quite good...

Seems like a slight error in grading, or possibly transposed numbers. But, the centering is really not good, top to bottom.

Posted By: Robert
Glad I could help you guys out. Not much gets by me. Just to bad I can't afford a lot of the stuff I see. I do have three Piedmont 42 backs and would love the Matty. I bet this is going to go pretty high at the end. Should be interesting to watch the seconds tick away to see how many people saw it. Rob

Posted By: Robert
N.C. stands for North Carolina with very few Piedmonts were made. Only Piedmont 350-460 have these backs. Rob

Posted By: B Hodes
I'm not terribly knowledgeable about the T206s but it doesn't seem like it went for that much more than any other Matty in that shape (in fact a Portrait would have gone for more!). It did have a lot of bids though ...

Posted By: Brian Weisner
Hi All
I think the Matty had a few problems dragging the price down:

1. It was graded 5 by BECKETT VINTAGE, which is not nearly as strict or respected as regular Beckett grading.
2. It is off center from top to bottom with almost no top border.
3. Alot of back collectors won't pay a premium for the player on the front, there only concern is the back.
4. I do think alot of Vintage collectors missed the card because most don't like cards graded by Beckett Vintage.
Hindsight is 20/20, but had I known it was only going for 349.00, I would have bought it. I thought it might fall in the 600-700 range.
be well brian

Posted By: runscott
But a Piedmont 42 in that condition would normally go for $125-$200, so I think interested bidders were only willing to pay the going "black cap Matty" rate.

Like a lot of t206's with tough backs, you only seem to get the back premium on commons. The HOF'ers only get part of the back premium. I had a brown Hindu Matty portrait that suffered because of this.

The HOF'ers with super-tough backs, like BL460's, have had the opposite problem on ebay - they get the back premium, but not the proportionate amount of "HOF'er premium".

But, based on scarcity, the Piedmont 42 should bring more, but it doesn't. Doug and Art's VCBC article about t206 backs scarcity(#26)has the red Hindu premium at $250 and I think the Piedmont 42 is probably just as scarce. BTW, if you are serious about t206 backs you need to order VCBC #26.

Posted By: runscott
that Don Betz publishes - you've probably seen references to it on the board. I was referring to issue #26 - they are on #33 now. You can order back issues by checking out their web-site (see my vintage links).

(above free plug not paid for by anyone)
