Posted By: Brueso
...because I've never particularly cared for the looks of the T206 Wagner (I think the E95 Wagner is a lot better looking), so I will never have to be tempted to spend my extra million(s) on one. Now- if someone was intending to send me one for free- I DON'T WANT THEM TO CHANGE THEIR MIND- but I don't particularly like portrait cards. It is interesting to see the portrait the T206 was made from, though.

Posted By: fkw707
There are hundreds of vintage cards that are far rarer that the T206 Honus Wagner (est. about 50-65). For example I am almost positive every single card from these sets are far rarer, some with numbers well under a dozen or less of each card. T208, T214, T215 Pirate, T216 Mino, T216 V.Extra, T217, T231, Plowboys, Diaz, Derby, Worch, N92 Nadja, E97 B&W, E99, E100, E104, E105, E107, E123, E125, E136 HR Kisses, All Zeenuts with coupons, E221, E222, E224, E254 proofs, E270 red border, E271, E286, E300, Base-Ball Bats Candy, J=K Candy, Orange Border Candy, All Star Baseball Candy, Geo. Ruth Candy, Star Player Candy, Big Eater, Schapira Brother Big Show Candy, Western Playground, Holland, Honey Boy, 1910 W-Unc Strip, W-Unc. BigHead, W553, W555, 80% of all 19th Century cards, etc., etc. Some of these sets, I havent seen examples for sale in a couple years or more (like J=K, Schapira, E222, E123, etc.). I have owned or own many type examples from most of these sets. My favorite are the E123, W-Unc. BigHeads, Holland, Base-Ball Bats Candy, Schapira, and a few others, as they are extremely rare, and undervalued in my opinion. Frank

Posted By: Brian C Daniels
I purchased all and everyone any of you presently have and all of them minus the Bescher and the Jennings are far rarer than the Wagner. I had 756 cards total.......but you all know the weird distribution. I still have five of them with three or less known! Five of us on here have the E-102 Miller fielding pose LIpset say's only one exists.........various Nadja's t-bob,Pete C & John W have are far rarer than the Wagner as is about 50 other E-cards I have at present. Frank Ward has 50+ 10 or less known oddities and uncataloged cards and many of us have a N-172 or two that are uncataloged = probably only a few known. Leon's 4-base hits Kelly. I have suposedly the only "Altuna" Cobb known and a Cobb t-206 with Drum back......All the N-508's and N-48's leon and I have posted and discussed are far rarer than the Wagner.....and one of our all time favorites, the Matty horizontal E-145-1 CJ and the E-90-3 Chance and Gandil are cards I have I believe to be rarer than the est 114 wagners that exist!!! All the "big Three " in the t-205,6,7 and the T-208's are all rarer than Honus!

Now you got to think about it to find the other 999 in the not so easy check lists to view from the 1958 original ACC*....................Ironically, I would say over 25 years,Festberg has sold tons of cards now cataloged much rarer than the Wagner.......although many were Ex/Mt with bullet hole!

Posted By: TBob
Brian is talking about the St. Louis Najdas. Despite a supposed find some years back, they are still scarce as hen's teeth.
I will throw in a couple of one-of-a-kind proofs I own, Chance NY and Kling Bos. which look like E96s but are not. Add an E98 Old Put Clarke which has now magically become a tobacco card according to SCD, E94 Close overprints, etc. All of these are far rarer than the mighty Honus card.
I have a buddy trying to find a T205 Joss and I know he would swear it is scarcer than Wagner.
The beat goes on...

Amonst more modern cards, my favorites include the 51 Wheates Mickey Mantle and the color progression proof set for the Unissued 1975 Hostess George Brett Rookie Card.

Posted By: Jay Miller
Brian---If I'm the Jay you are referring to, what Gypsy Queen? I have a large GQ of Ward, but not a small one (although I have had a small one in the past which I traded).
I think what this thread is saying is that the supply of Wagners is not that small vis-a-vis alot of vintage cards. However, the other side of the equation that determines value (DEMAND) is higher for the T206 Wagner than any of the cards we have mentioned. As Lew Lipset has said to me on numerous occasions--rare does not mean valuable.

The other 10% would be closer to the same level as E104s. All E104s are MUCH harder to find and I would call all of those rare to very rare.

Posted By: jay behrens
I have had two complete sets of uncatalogued
(they might be now, but back in 1987 they weren't) strip cards from the late 20s. One was printed on blue cardboard, the other on red and used actual photos. Not very attractive and often difficult to even make out details in the photos.

My addition to truly scare items would be complete boxes of Wheaties from 1930s. I owned a complete run of these up to the 1941 set in the mid 80s.

I got a good chuckle when I offered them to a very prominent dealer who was running an add saying he was buying them. When I showed him what I had, he said he had already bought all the Wheaties sets that he needed, lol. As suspected, he had already bought a collection (and not complete boxes) and was up to his usual trick of posting a large buy price for something he had already bought cheap, then used that add to justify the high resale price.

Jay

Posted By: brian parker
I agree with what Frank has listed, and would go even further in claiming that around 25-30% of the catalogued pre-1930 sets have fewer (less than 50) of each individual card. An example would be the the bread series ('D' designation) cards. Almost all of them would fall in this category.

To add to Frank's point, besides the Zeenut cards with coupons, probably 15% of the nearly 4000 Zeenuts issued are available in quantities less than 50.

Some of my favorite tough type cards include the E300 Plow Boys, the Baseball Bats, the Orange Border set, and the D310 Pacific Coast Biscuits.

Brian

Posted By: Robbie Culpepper
Most didn't realize that it was Bonds' final homerun last year that set a new professional record. In 1954 (playing for,of all 'strange places'),Roswell of the Longhorn League, Bauman hit 72 homers (and hit .400). While Joe Hauser (63 hr in '30; 69 in '33)cards are fairly easy to locate (I have one) because he did make it to the majors, cards of vintage minor-league stars are scarce if they exist at all. I also have a 1923 Walter Mails- Buz Arlett. He got his one and only opportunity in the show in 1931 as an outfilder for the Phillies-at age 32,after 13 years in the minors & all he did was to hit .313 in 418 ABs with 18 HR & 72 RBIs. The next year, he returned to the 'bushes' hitting 54 HRs for Baltimore of the International League- finishing his professional career with 450 HRs ; 432 in the minors - & .341 AVG. The old, great days of the minor leagues are gone forever, but those stories and the legends that followed are richer than ever and feel much closer than the rich guys that play in the majors. Let us all remember that Baseball is far more than just the 'Major Leagues'.

Ride the subway to Fenway, have a sausage and peppers outside the park, and get a bleacher seat if possible. The bleacher seats have always been gone when I went to Wrigley. Nope, I've never bought a ticket in advance to either stadium, and I've always gottne in. On a sadder note, the Cubs are not in town the week of the National, so we'll have to make do with the White Sox...and Blues music!
