Posted By: TBobJust curious: how many of you guys (and gals) are collecting the T207 set? How many of you have a near set or set? Just wondering because with the dearth of tough cards for sale anywhere, I figured someone has either hoarded them (unlikely) or they are all in sets or near-sets. Thanks. Bob

Posted By: ThomasHello, I am collecting the T207's...and my collection stands at a whopping 11 cards. 10 are Recruit backs and I recently got a Cycle back. None of the tough cards or HOFers though. I am holding out for a torn in pieces and then put back together with duct tape Lewis that I can hopefully get for pennies! Personally I am not much of a backs collector. I would like to get an example of at least one or two of each back type. But I really just want to complete the basic set..in any condition. So in case anyone missed it the first time...I will give those off condition T207's a good and loving home if anyone feels like abandoning them! 8-) Take care, Thomas

Posted By: TBobI remember about 15 years ago when I put together a nice near set which I later sold (dumb, dumb) that T207s were about as easy to find as T205s. Maybe they weren't being handled by as many dealers, but when you found a guy who had them, he normally had a ton of them. I remember going to a show in Kansas City in 1982 and asking a guy if he had any T207s. He stared at mne quizically and then reached under his table and brought out two boxes of cards about the size of those safety match boxes toy see, each with a neat stack in no particular order, each stack carefully wrapped in kleenex. When I opened up each box, there were tons of EX and EXMT T207s. If I had had more money I would have bought all 400 or so, as it were I bought about 50 including Speaker, Hooper, Tyler and many of the toughies. All beauties and not one single frigging crease to be found. He looked in his Beckett, charged 1/2 the book price and then went I bought so many, took more off since it was a large purchase. My best buying day ever. When I got home I looked at the SCD and saw several dealers selling T207s and in the next few months ordered a bunch. Alan Hagler (a name many despise in the hobby) had literally hundreds of nice T207s which had not been trimmed or altered and I bought a lot of toughies from him including Rassmussen. All were Broadleaf backs. David Festberg, back when he was grading fairly, sold me a Lowdermilk in top shape in the late 80's, early 90's. They used to be ALL OVER THE PLACE. Now you have to hunt and scrape for them and are lucky to find any of the tough backs in any condition at any price. I wonder where the heck they all went ???????

Posted By: runscottIt's a very unique-looking issue. I think most collectors either love them or hate them, so they probably stop circulating quicker than other issues. I think very few pre-WWII HOF'er collectors would choose a t207 pose.

Posted By: TimI managed to get all the HOFers except Bender pretty readily, as well as Saier, Ragan, and some minor rarities. But as tbob knows, a bunch of the commons, not just the recognized rarities, are very tough. You can go a whole show, even at Fort Washington, without seeing any T207s. That's certainly not true of T205s.-- I still enjoy adding to the set when I can, but like so many collectors, I have lost some interest because the supply's just not there. It'll be a back-burner set, at least for a while.

TOUGH! the scd has the guide price way off on these, the tougher commons used to book for about 25% more, now they book the same. must have gotten easier to find! when in reality they should book 3-4x what a recruit common sells for. when some of the tough ones in nicer grade(ex or better) have made an appearance on ebay they have brought over $200. i had the complete set, but have recently traded 2 of my tough commons to consumate a deal. i am in need of baum and downey in vg/ex or better. i have several of the tough commons to trade or will trade a hofer for the pair. i will also sell outright. scott

Posted By: MWOn a related subject, the Near Mint and Near Mint to Mint values for a T207 "common" in the SMR are $125 and $265, respectively. Also, with the exception of Cicotte and Weaver, there are only six non-Hall of Famers listed above common including Lewis, Livingston, Lowdermilk, Miller, Saier, and Wood.

Also curious how the 'crazing' to the finish on these cards affects value. Is an otherwise NM card with perfect corners diminished in value because of crazing/cracking to the surface finish?

Posted By: TBobThe crazing tends to take a little value away from the higher end cards. The only Red Cross back I know of (there are rumored to be 5 total) is owned by Scott Elkins. I think he may have offered it on ebay not too long ago but it didn't meet reserve.

I agree they are gloomy and moody looking cards with that brown background but besides being so challenging, it is a chance to grab a card of a player who is in no other set. I also like the T207 version of Tinker more than his cards in any other set, ditto with Weaver.

Posted By: Brian HodesI wouldn't exactly say that I am trying to complete the set (I am more interested in upgrading my T205s and T202s) but I am gradually accumulating them around EX condition. So far I have about 25 I think -- mostly commons with a few Hofers and my prized Weaver.

Posted By: TBobFrom the responses I've seen, T207s are 1) still fairly unpopular with the mainstream vintage card collector 2) finding their ways in to collections as opposed to many other tobacco cards which are purchased for re-sale down the road and 3) along with Obaks are great investments if you want to wait, and wait, and wait....
