Posted By: David
Hello, I bought the pictured early Cuban trading card: N230-3 Album Universal. Can anyone tell me about it? I know that it comes from a multi sports issue. In particular, I wonder if anyone knows facts about the whole set, and the date of issue. Thanks

Posted By: Ryan Christoff
The Cuban card you have is from a 1915(?) multi-sport issue by "Susini". There are only a few baseball cards in the set. Other sports include cock-fighting, jai-alai, soccer, etc.

Many believe the card you own is actually of Tris Speaker, though no players are identified on any of the cards in the set (as far as I know). There is another "Base Ball" card in the set that is allegedly of Rogers Hornsby. It is a game-action scene with several players in it, so it's hard to say.

My feeling is that the set was produced some time between 1915 and 1919. I have often seen it listed as a 1915 issue, but if there is Hornsby that is unlikely.

As you can see, there is conflicting information about this set. I have seen these cards in two different Mastro auctions, both times listed as being from the 1880's!!! That is simply not the case.

I hope this helps, but I have a feeling it might have just made it more confusing.

-Ryan

Posted By: David
It is most helpful. I also was originally told it was from the in 1880s, which I doubted when I got it in the mail because it's made with a type of photography not available in the 1880s. This misdating is no big deal for me, as it's a nice card one way or the other.

The Tris Speaker-angle is intriguing and I will definitely look into that.

Again, thanks for the information.
