Dan McKee and I stayed at the Hampton Hotel in Oaks, PA this weekend. The lady (Nancy) at the check-in counter realized we were there for the Sportscards Show.
So, she asked us if we would be interested in looking at her husband's tobacco card collection ? A re-sounding.... "Yes!" ....from Dan and I, had her instantly call her
husband at home. An hour later, Dan met Nancy's husband at the entrance to the Show and paid for his admission ticket.

He came to the show with his binder (15-pocket sheets) containing an assortment of 200 - T206/T205 cards. All of them POLAR BEAR cards (ranging from Vg to Ex).
He received the cards from his Grandfather's uncle. I asked him where his Grandparent was from when he originally collected them.....Lehigh Valley, Pennsylvania.

After we checked-them-out, we gave the gentleman an offer. He said he would consider our offer and wanted to discuss it with his wife. About a couple of hours later
he called us, and returned to the Show. Dan made a very fair and reasonable deal with him.

This collection includes quite a number of HOFer's (both T206's and T205's). Some examples are Cy Young, Speaker, McGraw, Bresnahan, Tinker, Evers, Chance, etc.

The moral of this story is..... we were very fortunate in selecting the right Hotel to stay in :)

Ted,

Congratulations! These stories always make me think how many collections are sitting in different places, undiscovered or just kept private from the hobby at large. Would love to see some of the cards you were able to purchase. Hope everything is well.

Hi Joe

This T205 Quinn is the only card I currently have from this collection. Dan pulled this one out of the binder because he knew I needed a POLAR BEAR of Quinn for my T205 run.
I expect we will be doing some forthcoming deals between us regarding this collection.

This T205 Quinn is typical of many of the 200 cards in this collection.

Hi Rob

About 1/2 of these 200 cards are T206's; and, I was hoping that a Demmitt or an O'Hara was in this group. Neither one of these variations are in this collection.

Perhaps, those two guys were only shipped out to St. Louis, rather than Lehigh Valley, PA.

Hi Fred

Let me tell you the rest of this story......it gets even better.

There are 2 nearby Hotels in Oaks, PA. The Hampton Inn and the Hilton. Danny expected me to book us into the Hilton. However, I booked us into the Hampton.

The check-in lady (Nancy), whose husband's collection we bought worked at the Hampton. Had I booked us at the Hilton, there would NOT be a story to tell you.

You said it best, ole buddy.... "I must be a good luck charm" :)

Based on other markings on the back it should be Griffith, Hummel or McQuillan.

Wow awesome to see!

Any idea, based on the cards included and their condition, what the approximate value of this haul might be? Just as is, not talking about potentially grading certain items. Is this a $25K+ stack? I know the cards pretty well but would honestly have trouble valuing them so as to make an offer.

Hi Frank

Dan and I were like two "kids in a candy store".

The last time I had a T206 find that had provenance like this one was 14 years ago from a small town in North Carolina (400+ PIEDMONT cards).

I think it is a consensus view that Polar Bear scrap tobacco was packaged in Middletown, OH, just north of Cincinnati. That's about halfway between St. Louis and Philly (admittedly a little closer to St. Louis). It would not be shocking (at least to me) if PB packs made their way to eastern PA. I do find it interesting that there were no Demmitts or O'Haras in the collection.

Take care guys.

Ted,

They excluded some areas in the packing and shipping of certain brands because of the tobacco laws in those areas but I don't think it would have been practical for them to start pulling certain players to include or exclude. If there was around 100 T206's that's only 40% of the polar Bears if there were no duplicates so most likely Demmitt and O'hara just happened to be in the 60% that weren't in the collection.

tedzan

Imagine how fabulous it would have been if these two guys were included in this collection ?

Approximately 100 subjects are T206's, representing the 350-only Series....350/460 Series....460-only Series (both Print groups).

Hoping to make December show, particularly since I missed the National. Unless, of course, Florida gets smacked again with another Ian. Fortunately, for me and many other Floridians Palm Beach County was mostly spared. I fear that our local insurance and world reinsurance markets are going to be hard pressed to meet their liabilities, given the severity of Ian. John

As a number of you Net54er's know, I've been working on T206 runs of the Exclusive 12 subjects (460-only Series). Zach Wheat in this group of 12 has been a real
challenge. The Exclusive 12 subjects were each printed with 13 backs. Thanks to Dan making a deal with me for the POLAR BEAR back from this collection. None of
the Exclusive 12 subjects were printed with LENOX or PIEDMONT 460 Fac #42 backs. They were printed with UZIT, however Wheat has yet to be confirmed with it.
