View Full Version : Show off your set displays… beyond the binder??

Am thinking of diversifying my HOF collecting a bit to complete some sets from when I was a kid - it may sound weird to ask, but does anyone have any cool or interesting way that they organize and display their complete sets beside the classic card binder and plastic sheet?

And if you do go the binder route, any special way you might pimp your binders to make them a bit more colorful, fun, artful to display?

Love to see some photos… I plan to add my sets on these shelves to compliment and diversify my individual card collection

Here’s mine - love to see yours!

Thx -

Jeff

Great set-up Jeff!

Is the baseball scene wallpapered on the wall?

Great set-up Jeff!

Is the baseball scene wallpapered on the wall?

It is, yes. My family bought this wall mural for me that sticks to the wall with this awesome early 20th century (I assume) baseball scene. I wrote to the company asking if they had any background on the image they used, never heard back.

But it does give a pretty cool background to my cards from the 20s and 30s.

I have made my own binders for my sets based on the actual wrapper art. These are recreated directly and not a facsimile like the ones on Ebay a guy makes. I redraw all the art and use binders from Target that have the clear fronts and spine. Started with a few vintage and newer complete sets and continually working my way through them.

Easy to display because it’s such a small set but I love the Red Heart set and is on the opposite wall from where I enter my card room so it’s the first thing I look at when I flip on the light.

Quick follow up question on the binders you use - these are D ring binders with the ability to slip in your cover and binder art, right? Target or Staples? Or bought as card binders specifically?

Loving this idea - might also do the same for my lower grade HOF player cards, to get them out of their boring, dark, hidden away boxes. They are not nice enough to make my display area. But still fun to imagine having a George Brett binder, a Carlton Fisk binder etc. And I could then take your creative wrapper art idea and apply it to the specific player binder.

Thx for the tip on the specific binder you use also -

Jeff

I buy mine at Target. Their brand has the reinforced edges to prevent splitting and the clear front and spine is very clear. 3 inch for the larger sets and 2 inch for the smaller ones. I've built the spine art to work with those sizes.

After months of searching marketplace on facebook, I finally found a worthy case to display my Chase collection. It's an old Lenox store display case. I had to cut 3" off the top to make it fit in my basement, and it still needs to be painted black, but I think it looks pretty good, a nice upgrade from my original two smaller, cramped cases. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210829/92d4fe5b10e3065ca2e0b62fb2e594db.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210829/0472abbe323e9035b71d0e52d0e1a316.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210829/5053067524ae56d08d6f9832bfe4957e.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210829/b32f33528738c100cd65c48ba62be6b4.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210829/2bf2212f6f36cc7bdce6c932d22f5d3d.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210829/b91f2607603ef682fec0ffc9b601122e.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210829/c4ee63d0586aef8a002497ff5be2418d.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210829/e3c8ccfa7a21815e2b80302ec27a28dc.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210829/3ead12e22760095cab6b16fdad72062f.jpg

When this thread popped up a few months ago, I was in the middle of a big display project that I started a couple months into Covid. I'd been back into collecting for about seven years, but I was very disorganized and most of my collection was in a wooden trunk that I never opened. I was getting minimal enjoyment out of my cards and decided that I really needed to be able to see them every day to get the most out of them. I looked at hundreds of different cabinets and finally picked this one.

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/51663668544_01e4a0912b_b.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/2mHkNHW)

After I got the cabinet, the first thing I did was install UV-blocking film on both windows in the room (only indirect sunlight, thankfully), as well as on each pane of glass in the cabinet. Then I installed a lock and a couple remoted-controlled strands of small LED lights. After that I spent a few months planning out the shelves and getting all the plastic stands. Then came the re-organization of the collection and finally setting up the display. I'm pretty happy with how it came out, and my wife even seems to be impressed with my collection now!

(2) Yankees shelf: Butterfinger Ruth & Gehrig; Quaker Oats Ruth; a few Mantles, and DiMaggios. Eventually I'd like to put all 3 Mattingly RCs on the right side, but I only have the Donruss at the moment.

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/51662181622_643c19bc30_b.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/2mHdbHm)

(4) Prewar shelf #2: A row of T205 HOFers on top; middle row of various T207 and E92-family caramels in a color wheel; bottom row of caramels with sunrises on the left and sunsets on the right. I'm really happy with how this one turned out :)

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/51663215963_9d2a301c5b_b.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/2mHiubP)

(5) Other prewar & etc: A tier of E121 and other B&W cards at left, including a couple Cobbs, a couple GC Alexanders, WaJo, and other HOFers; a tier of candy & gum cards at right, with a Sport Kings Cobb, some 1915 CJs, some Goudeys, and others; and a middle tier with some random pre- and postwar. I'm not as happy with this shelf at the moment and will probably reorganize it and swap out some cards later this month.

Do any of you who display worry about the effects of sunlight over time?

Yes, that was a major concern I had when deciding whether to display my cards. Ultimately I chose to accept the risk and do the display. I wasn't looking at my cards on a regular basis, and I needed to see them in order to really enjoy them and make the hobby worthwhile.

So, I did what I could to mitigate the risk. The room where I have the cabinet has two windows that get indirect sunlight. I bought some UV-blocking film that supposedly filters out 98% of UV light and installed it on both windows. I also installed the same film on the cabinet glass. So, in theory, the indirect sunlight is getting double-blocked on its way to the cards. I have blackout curtains that I usually keep down over the windows also. The lights in that particular room are only on for maybe an hour a day on average, and they are all LEDs, which emit less UV. The LED strands inside the cabinet are only on very rarely, and usually only for a couple minutes at a time.

So with all of this, I'm hoping that I'm as protected as reasonably possible.

While everyone would like to show off their collection, my big concern about displaying items is the possible damage that UV rays can cause. You were the only one in this thread that specifically mentioned that as part of your design and you seemed to have done everything possible to minimize the effect. Good job.

I chose a different approach to display my collection. With over a decade to go in the last millennium, I purchased a somewhat large, very heavy and sturdy 5-drawer blueprint case from SAFCO Engineer Supply Company. Expensive, and its space could not be totally useful, but I was adamant even in 1989 about preventing UV light from damaging, and destroying, my collection.

Several years ago, I began converting it to a card collection display. I drilled out the heavy metal flaps used to keep blueprints flat. Then, I got some superior, thick Crescent matte art cardboard and carefully cut them to fit the viewing area of each of the 5 shelves. I bought good cotton batting to glue down on the cardboard. I made each triple thick. Then, I over-layed each mat with midnight blue velvet, or purple crushed velvet. Each pad had an additional pad in the back to prevent graded card holders from sliding back too far; in retrospect this was unnecessary but my German overengineering trait in me willed out.

I could not be happier with the result. ANY TIME I wish to see my collection, I just pull out a given drawer. For most of the 1,440 minutes in a day, ultra violet light will never touch it. Even then, the hobby room has a covering blocking the small window that allows daylight in, as I prefer to use the room's fluorescent light.

Furthermore, I personally do not want to see my collection every time I enter the hobby room, as familiarity breeds contempt, but displaying them in the open breeds irreversible UV ray damage. When I want to treat myself, I admire them. I do not have the same feeling for my model car collection. The sun's rays won't hit them either because of my blocking the window.

I guess each of us collectors has his own whims, fears, and preferences. Guys, your displays are all sensational.

I've shown a pair of photos of my collection in the case on here a couple of times; I won't dig them up unless someone wants to see it.

My display rooms are in the basement. There is very little sunlight in my MLB and none in my NFL room. I’ve been displayed autographed baseballs, memorabilia, cards, etc for over ten years and haven’t noticed anything fading. I do have to run dehumidifiers from April-Oct but that’s about it.
