Have you written the seller? If so, what did he say and why is it still up?

This might be the ultimate example of someone buying the slab instead of the card. The PSA Flip once again overrides the item itself.

There's also the 1935 Muratti card that is not Babe Ruth. It's actually the swimmer's coach, Ernst Brandsten.

This one's currently at $5,800 with 4 days to go on ebay:

It is a Probstein listing. Have they ever taken down a listing?

Good point... hopefully some prospective bidders will miraculously see this thread, and their shill bidder will get stuck with it. Just wishful thinking.

I just sent an email to Rick Probstein, and an ebay message to the seller of the 1935 Muratti, telling both that the cards do not depict Ruth, and pointed them to this thread.

We'll see what happens.

Proper thing to do is to send back to PSA one of two ways:
1) If the owner submitted the card to PSA, they should return as a mechanical error.
2) If they paid a Babe Ruth price for the card, they could try to get a refund from PSA under the Grade Guarantee or the person they bought it from.

This thread reminds me of part of why I abhor PSA, SGC, and all the rest... including those who seem to think they're infallible. EvilKing and Steve D are on it.

Yet did anyone suggest sending it back to PSA for them to correctly identify the stamp? The scoundrels, when they incorrectly grade a card as if they know all, then I think they should have some liability when they get a card wrong.

This article about the 1935 Muratti card was written in March 2018.

You can see that they've removed the Ruth attribution on recently graded cards.

There may be a deeper mystery here: Has anyone ever seen Ernst Brandsten & Babe Ruth in the same room together?

Steve,

Are you still "Looking for T205's or anything Babe Ruth...email or PM me if you have any to sell."

There's a rare stamp with Ruth on it on ebay, right now....!:p

Here is a better photo of Brandsten that I posted in the other thread about this card.

421661

This shows him in the 1920's when he was the diving coach at Stanford. He competed in diving in his native Sweden at the 1912 Olympics. His wife, also Swedish, won a gold medal in diving in 1912. They both coached divers at Stanford from 1915-1948. The also ran Searsville Lake Park.

Why don’t we just pin this post to the top since someone seems obligated to make this announcement every few months.

And PSA has already corrected their ID on the stamp, as well.

It's been an issue for a longtime and is still current. Some one can, and probably will, get taken.

Actually someone here posted about this mistake in 2017 :D

And PSA still hasn't responded to my email about their error.

Honestly, I can't believe anyone ever thought that was Ruth to begin with. lol. I mean c'mon. Like was there any theory as to why Babe Ruth would be hanging out with this random swimmer? More likely someone just said it once and then ran with it because it will make the card worth more and why-the-hell-not.

I'm going to use my $20 of eBay bucks to put a dent in the purchase price of a tintype of a random dude (not named Ruth)...perhaps his name was George though, that's a pretty popular name from that era!

I messaged them about the tintype about a week ago and told them that it's an 1870's tintype and that tintypes were long out of fashion by the 1890's and that Ruth wasn't born until 1895, much less a teenager. I didn't even try to get into the fact that it doesn't look like him. Seller emailed back some hocus pocus basically saying that the facial identification proved it with 87% accuracy. So.....

This may be an upopular opinion but I'm wondering if this doesn't depict ANY player. If I were a Rube Marquard collector, I wouldn't add this one to my collection. The lips and eyes are too big, ears are wrong for Rube, and face is too fat. Obviously, the pose completely matches the Rube one shown but I'm still wondering if this is a E91 type compilation. Of course, I am open to being corrected but if i were Rube in 1917, I would be pretty upset with that depiction of me!

Please note - these are images I found on the internet.

It's the exact same card (same PSA serial number) and the same seller. He simply ended the first auction, and relisted it at a BIN.

Regarding the 1917 Stamp, according to the auction listings on PSA's website, the last two sales have both been this exact stamp (Cert #24819255).

Probstein sold it on Sep 1st 2020 for $1508.24.

Probstein sold it again on Oct 14th 2020 for $816.00.

So, it looks like the first buyer realized after the purchase that it isn't Ruth at all, and sent it back to Probstein, who in his infinite wisdom, simply relisted it hoping he'd sucker someone else

Yes, if you are blind it doesn't depict Marquard. Otherwise, these cards in bad holders are hot potatoes. Probstein knows better and should be confronted about it.
