What do you think on Clemente RC?

If you agree that it IS authentic - does it grade higher than 4?

Obviously the seller has run into issues on eBay with this card previously - I'm wondering why he wouldn't just send in to TPG and get it slabbed.

The sellers description reads :

First off let me be very clear that this card is an authentic 1955 Topps Baseball Card of Pittsburgh Pirate great Roberto Clemente. The re-listing of the card is my response to ebay accusing me of listing this previously as a real deal 1955 Topps card that in their minds is counterfeit. Obviously eBay does not know the first thing about vintage sports cards. ebay refuses to speak to me about the authenticity of this card, and will not reveal any sources that lead them to removing the card and threatening to suspend my account. Come on ebay (supposed) card experts. Stop saying you do not talk to people, yet remove my card and threaten me without having any accountability. ebay has said many strange and unfounded things about me and this card, which I'm challenging. I really hope you the card collecting community can let ebay know what you think after viewing the photos I have taken. I pulled the card out of the holder and took pictures of it in it's raw form. If any serious card collectors think this is fake, please let me know what distinguishing characters lead you to that conclusion. Thanks, and by the way this card was pulled from a 1955 Topps pack by my cousin in 1955, and he had the card in his possession for over 60 years before selling it to me. He thinks it is unbelievable(as do I) that people doubt whether this card is real or not. He said he can still remember the day he pulled it from the pack! I guess ebay knows nothing about raw cards, and only believes that graded cards are authentic. We all know that even graded cards have been shown to be altered, fakes, etc.

It is weird he wont get it slabbed. He has a Jordan base card graded....Maybe it came back altered before. I don't see it higher than a 4 if legit. And it does look real.

..I was unaware that E-Bay has put on extra staff to look at new listings of items . He must be part-time and easily distracted though ; that would explain the stuff that slips through to the sportscards for sale.....?? Still , this is comforting to know. We should start seeing a lot fewer fake baseball cards on E-Bay now.

this card grades VG/EX at best.

surprised Ebay took it down. I complained about an 84 Star Jordan (101) that is a clear counterfeit and its still up there.

eBay's 'safety' polices are Alice In Wonderland stuff. I recently tried to sell a Louis Vuitton purse for my daughter that she got from my mom. eBay knocked it down as a fake within minutes of it going up. When I finally got hold of someone there, they said they had "multiple" complaints about it being a fake and demanded I produce a receipt for it! I asked them why they took anonymous peoples' word that the purse was fake but left fake baseball cards up by the thousands. No explanation, so I told them I would go fake a receipt and re-list it, and f*** you very much.

The top edge of the card don't look right to me. If you get that, but a black light to it and see how that edge, and the entire card, looks.

If you want a card that's a 4 or better, maybe buy a graded card to start with?

I've reported multiple WS Press Pins and they are never taken down. Some dude in Europe has a treasure trove of them and sells and sells. He makes a couple hundred bucks on the more popular ones to dopes who don't do research and wonder how dozens of them ended up in Europe.

Yep. That makes me sick.

my fraud detector is going crazy while reading the description. I would stay away from it. Not liking the relatively even corner wear with apparently no other defects for a card "his cousin pulled from a pack". As others have mentioned no reason not to grade this card if it is gradable.

Card looks legit to me. Looks like it may have been in a screw-down holder. Whether it's been altered or not of course would not itself make it counterfeit, for what that's worth.

I'm seriously skeptical about the part of the description that says ol' cuz can still remember the day he pulled it from the pack. A relatively unknown rookie at the time? Unless the cousin was a Pirates fan or only bought a couple of packs all year so as to recall the events of some particular day, I'm just really having trouble buying that.

lol, the "my cousin pulled from a pack" line is a huge red-flag. I have seen variants of this all over Ebay.

A seller listing a big card, raw, in the context of having other recently-graded cards in newer slabs says one thing to me -- it was indeed Submitted, and came back Altered or MinSizeReq. Nothing in his description contradicts that.

It's a PSA 3 on its best day. If the lack of value there doesn't scare any rational person away, the crazed ranting in the description should :D

If eBay really went after all the questionable listings they've got on there, there'd be almost nothing left. I'm glad they're incrementally improving, but come on.

Cards looks real to me. Is it altered? No idea.

I had previously reviewed that listing, and found it strange as well. And while the 1955 Clemente is valuable, it's not exactly rare. There are plenty of similarly conditioned Clementes out there. I think we all can attest to the theory that if something doesn't seem quite right, it's probably not. So if you are in the market for a 1955 Clemente, I would pass on this one.

Plus, the price isn't exactly an amazing bargain. I think we all agree it would grade either a 3 or 4 (assuming it wouldn't come back "Authentic"). And it's overpriced for a 3. And while it might be about $300 to $400 cheaper than a graded 4, I think spending the extra money for the piece of mind of a graded 1955 Clemente would be well worth it.
