I just picked up a large group of 1962 Topps Stamps. Most are two stamp panels with the tabs intact. Some like the Mantle/Aaron panel posted below do not have the tabs. They were all well cared for and look to be in great condition. There was also a few singles in the lot.

I remember getting them as inserts in the packs when I was a kid. I know that they were suppose to go in albums, but of course I pasted them on all of the furniture in the bedroom, my clothes, and my little brother's forehead. I was far more interested in the cards than the stamps.

I imagine that most kids did the same thing or pasted them in the books. Looking at them now I think they are pretty cool.

Other than the information provided in the PSA population report is there any articles about the stamps, or does anyone here collect them and could tell me which stamps or combinations are the toughest to get? Is it worth having them graded?

Thanks for any help.

Best regards,

Joe

Definitely get them PSA graded if they look like that. They're in a bunch of registry sets and worth the outlay. I sent one in considered too fragile to holder, but will try again.

I have always enjoyed the 62 stamps. I would grade any single (well centered major stars only) or Panel (major stars only - that has the tab intact and is well centered).

PSA does not require the tab to give them a number grade for a panel, FWIW. If the players have registry sets that are competitive, all of those players are worth grading.
I need some more Mantles for my set.

I picked up the Babe Ruth Famous Americans in that link off COMC from Dr. James Beckett a few months ago. It's at PSA right now. COMC didn't have the set marked right, but it was on their website for a year and cross-posted to eBay for quite a while. It was originally listed at $250 and I got it when he dropped it to about $99.
Here's mine, submitted in the board bulk submission from Bobby:

I seem to recall that in '62 if a player usually appeared on the leftmost stamp in a 2 stamp panel (i.e. more than once), then if they appeared once on the right side of a different panel, the latter was scarcer. That may have been disproven since though.

Thanks to the members that posted. I appreciated the advise about grading, the link to the Dave Hornish thread and the images of the 1962 Topps Stamps American Test Issue. I didn't know that that issue existed. Very cool Ruth and Gehrig.

Here are a few pictures of stamps from the lot I just purchased.

Best regards,

Joe
