I have a 1977 Topps Jerry Mumphrey (Cardinals player) proof with a red banner (instead of orange) without a printed signature. It came from the 1989 Topps archive auction at Guernsey's. I am noticing a few similar proof cards in Ebay. Is there a similar card for each card in the set? Or was it limited? If limited, is there a checklist?

I am a Cardinals collector and I am only interested in finding out how many Cardinals there are.

Also, the rare 1977 Topps Reggie Jackson Orioles uniform - is that the same kind of card?

Here is a link to what I am referring to.

The SCD Standard Catalog lists the Jackson proof, along with 11 other hand cut blank backed cards that were cut from a 66 card proof sheet. I think for a time SCD had a copy of one of the sheets in Lemke's office. All cards on the sheet were blank back and had no autos. The 12 listed in SCD ( not Denny) are unique in that the proof shows the players in a different uniform and different team from their issued card.

So I assume there were at least 54 other blank back cards with no autos on that sheet. I have not seen a scan of the sheet to know if Denny is on it. And do not know if all the cards in the set can be found with blank backs and no autos from multiple proof sheets.

I am not sure if this 77 proof strip further complicates things. I won this recently. It must be a proof sheet because the pictured Cardinal did not appear in the set. I do not know if these cards were among the 66 cards on the sheet that produced the 12 check listed in SCD.

Maybe someone else can add something

I know we still need to touch basis further on the Fleer Cardinal stickers issue issues

Interesting.

I also just purchased (on Ebay) a pair of 1977 Topps Pete Falcone proofs. One is the regular picture minus the signature. Then, it comes with a second card that is a different picture, but still a Cardinals uniform. I will post a picture when I get it.

Falcone had two different images; Topps and OPC.

Well crud. I thought I was getting a variation. They are both graded by Beckett and they both say 1977 Topps. There is nothing about OPC on the alternate. They are both blank backed.

1977 topps proof as mentioned above...have several versions... regular issue with no signature, and the ones where the team designation and uniforms are different, as Al mentioned...and then one like Al's Lee Richard...where there was no actual regular card issued of him...and then there is the Harry and Eric Rasmussen versions where he changed his name...

Apparently Topps axed Lee Richard and replaced him with John Hale because Richard was released by the Cardinals November 6, 1976 when these sheets were being made up in late 1976. Richard only hit .176 in 66 games for the Cardinals in 1976, but Hale was even worse hitting .154 in only 44 games for the Dodgers in 1976. It also left the Cardinals with only 22 cards in the 1977 Topps team set while the Dodgers wound up with 24 cards in the 1977 Topps team set.

Good info CB. The Cards sure had some bad teams in the 70s
