View Full Version : Effects of socialism on vintage cards

One doesn’t have to look far to see the push for socialism to replace capitalism in this country. The subject is in the news literally every day. I know we try to keep politics out of our conversations — and rightfully so. But I’ve been wondering lately if the movement becomes a reality what effect, if any, successful redistribution of wealth will have on our beloved hobby — in particular prices of vintage cards. What say y’all?

I thought political posts weren't allowed on this board?

Political post for sure. This should get the axe.

It will be terrible. Anyone caught collecting baseball cards will be locked up without a trial.

If I were you, Jason, I'd spend a lot of time worrying about this...

Well, let me see. If "redistribution of wealth" means I won't be paying $1372/month for crappy health insurance because it will be replaced by some type of medicare for all and/or reduced to say $500.00/month then I'll have an additional $10k or more per year to spend on cards. Of course, most of my competitors in the card marketplace will reap similar "windfalls" plus they likely will be freaking healthier to boot, so maybe I'd better think about this more.

All PSA 8s and above will be confiscated!!!! A national museum will be built to host them -- free of charge naturally, with multiple crying rooms and other snowflake accommodations -- built to the latest green standards. Access will be by high speed rail only. There will be a special Venezuelan Topps exhibit, of course.

"Even a baseball team, the Cincinnati Reds, temporarily renamed themselves the 'Cincinnati Redlegs' to avoid the money-losing and career-ruining connotations inherent in being ball-playing 'Reds' (communists)."

Definitely something to worry about every day until there are no more days.

Why don't you start with what your concept of wealth redistribution is? What do you think that means and why do you think it means you won't be able to sell your baseball cards? You don't exactly have to be wealthy to buy most of them.

Who said anything about not being able to sell them. There will always be a market. But what EFFECT will it have in prices in your opinion?

What do you mean by "socialism?" A soviet style communist takeover of the means of production, or a Nordic style mixed economy?

It's kind of a loaded question the way you posed it. Maybe you should turn off the cable news.

I would worry more about AI technology changing the way we do everything. Which could very well impact all of us in our lifetime.

I can’t speak to the #snowflakemovement

Does it really matter? The worlds going to end in 12 years anyway.

Heck I even predict there will be some 3D optic technology that will change the grading game entirely. Take the human error out of it and make it science based grading

Well, your question is predicated on whatever your understanding of wealth redistribution is. So taking that into consideration, zero effect.

For the love of God, Leon, kill this thread. It's going to quickly devolve into ugliness when someone starts bringing up Bernie Sanders and that squeaky voiced AOC moron.

(But to answer the original question, there will be no market for vintage cards, because all of them will be confiscated by the storm troopers of whomever becomes the new Stalin.)

I think wealth redistribution would be handily taken care of if they were to confiscate all 52 Mantles and hand a sliver to each Oliver Twist on line. Anyone who utters please sir, I want some more will be given a sliver of a Gregg Jerfferies Donruss instead.

If the super super rich have to pay taxes at anything close to the same rate they paid 50-60 years ago, I have no doubt that civilization as we know it will come to an end. Blood in the streets. Revolution. Cards will be the least of our problems.

I've always considered this hobby as exhibit A for the health and vigor of capitalism in America.

It’s as if the OP thought to himself “there aren’t enough forums on the internet where I can express my political concerns, so how can I post about them on a baseball card forum that doesn’t allow political conversation? I’ve got it!!! I’ll ask how socialism will affect...BASEBALL CARDS! Damn I’m good.” Perhaps you can fit abortion and gun control into a conversation about rare t206 backs. That would really impress me.

I was in Walmart today and someone in the other lane was taking about socialism taking over the country and now I read it here. It gives me a pretty good idea of what the big topic was today on Fox News. The viewers have a habit of repeating it to anyone who will listen. I come here to talk about sports and cards so have fun with this without me.

Don't get your panties in a wad, guys. One semi interesting thread of a somewhat fringe idea that is being talked in the news isn't going to be the downfall of this board, card collecting or civilization. It is a slow news day!!

Ok, if the libs take our guns, would they also try to take my 1911 Stevens Firarms set? I’m seriously concerned about this.

Only if you learn how to spell it. Given the last few comments it is apparent this thread should be locked.
