There is a 1979 Gretzky up for auction advertised as "factory cut short" . To me it is a great looking card with the OPC rough cut edges but I'm curious how common place this is. Is this considered a defect or a rarity ? Would PSA or SGC even grade this card ?
Thanks
Russ

It means the card doesn't measure 2.5x3.5 and they've already tried to get PSA to grade it. It would be put in an Authentic slab if you asked them to, presuming it's authentic (which the rough cut would help prove). Or, it might pass through on a submission with a different grader.
It is considered a huge negative to have an undersized card, not a valuable variation. However, for raw collectors that want an attractive one at a fraction of the price, undersized can serve those goals.

I'm no expert but that appears REAL short. Havent heard of factory short cuts, and I opened these packs years ago. Its a crazy "8"!

There are about 10-20 Beckett graded OPC Gretzky RCs on eBay. They all have the same 'short' look.

Maybe one of our tech savvy folks can do one of those comparisons.

Beckett holders are always like that, they aren't flush like PSA.

How did it get a 9 with the white circle in the lower left corner?

Fisheye print defects are graded based on the eye appeal it loses. The graded must have thought the card looked pretty amazing otherwise.

I was wondering that myself and wondered why it hadn't been moved yet?

There are many topics on this forum that are not specifically about baseball. This is more about the card than it is about the sport. I guess that's why it stayed
