I was setting my fantasy line ups tonight and noticed that the NBA has several team names that are singular: Miami Heat, Orlando Magic, Utah Jazz, Oklahoma City Thunder. I couldn't think of any baseball teams that weren't plural and didn't come up with any football teams either.

Wonder why it works so well for basketball.

Well, let's see

Chicago Fire - football 1974

Minnesota Wild - hockey NHL

Winston-Salem Dash - current baseball
Altoona Curve
Trenton Thunder
Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp
Lake Elsinore Storm
Visalia Rawhide
Fort Myers Miracle
Greenville Drive
West Virginia Power
Missoula Osprey

I'm sure there are others, if you want more.

I just looked on baseball-reference.com, and I could find only one historical pro baseball team that had a singular name.

The Newark Pepper was a Federal League team in 1915. Their roster included Bill McKechnie, Edd Roush, Germany Schaefer and Ed Reulbach.

The 1974-75 World Football League included the following teams:

The 1983-85 USFL included the following:

Chicago Blitz

Utah Jazz.

If that's not the most absurd major sports team name of all time I will eat my hat.

Yeah baby, those Mormon cats can swing and rip it up all night long. . . .

(And yes I know where the name came from. It's still incredibly ridiculous.)

The Orlando Juice and San Bernardino Pride.

Nashua Pride
York Revolution
Atlantic City Surf
Aberdeen Arsenal
Bridgeport Bluefish (Cold be plural or singular)

All in baseball.

Utah’s Team was transplanted from New Orleans. They decided to keep the Jazz name rather than switch to the Utah Tabernacles.

If you are including minor league baseball, there are definitely quite a few. Off the top of my head (though I haven't verified uniqueness):
Lansing Lugnuts
Las Vegas 51s
Delmarva Shorebirds
Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs
Albequerque Isotopes
Carolina Mudcats
Greensboro Grasshoppers
Fayetteville (NC) Woodpeckers

Those wouldn't count. They all have an "s".

Duh. Sorry. Missed the "singular" part of your original post.

FWIW, Wild and Storm have multiple teams in this thread already (may be others).

Red Sox and White Sox?

Whatever a sox is it doesn’t seem to be plural.

My all-time favorite -- which was coined by former NBC sportscaster Tim Ryan -- was the old Southern Hockey League's "Macon Whoopee" (1973-74)
