Pocket change for whomever bought it. :) If I could live in it I could have considered it.

I'd feed people before I spent that much on a baseball card. But, it is pretty sweet.

Less than 10 percent of that, and I no bills.
Wow.
Of course, shows you how poor I am, but a piece of cardboard is really worth more than I am?

The person with that level of disposable income probably does feed a lot of people.

it's all relative. a person who truly doesn't know where his next meal is coming from probably would shocked that someone would spend $100, $50 or even $10 on a baseball card. the sanctimonious comments that always seem to pop up when someone decides "too much" has been paid for anything are just that. just because you collect "low dollar" cards as defined by our hobby world doesn't mean that money couldn't be spent on better things. people in glass houses ...

Exactly. Now the person who sold the card can do just that.

I wasn't trying to open an ethical debate on feeding the poor vs buying a card. More that it's crazy the prices realized sometimes. I collect, but no matter how much I spend I always feel an element of guilt. Hobbies are silly but so are we. As a farmer, I actually do feed people so it is a relative comparison for me to make. I do think it's a super nice example of Gehrig though.

Centering is not even that great!

Watcha sayin Pete? The centering isn't 60/40 to 65/35 on the front and not 90/10 or better on the back? :p

People with centering "issues" would probably puke at seeing that graded a "9".... gotta figure, if you're going to drop almost $600K on a piece of cardboard that isn't "rare", you'd have to at least have it 55/45 or better on the front. ;) yeah, like I'd have that much to drop on a card.... I don't even have that much to spend on a card "in my dreams"....

If I were to spend 576K on a goudey gehrig card it better be 50/50/50/50!!!!!!

I don't see any upside on that "investment!"

I agree with you wholeheartedly. The problem isn’t how MUCH he spent, so much as the CARD it was spent on. It isn’t particularly well centered, and is one of the more common pre-war cards; eBay is littered with them. Having have said that, there are only 2 psa 9’s. Let’s be honest, if that card were in an 8 holder, no one would be offended and ask “how the hell is that only an 8?!?!” I don’t think it’s a stretch to say the guy bought the holder. But as is often the case with these types of threads, the bottom line is that the guy is obviously very wealthy and is entitled to spend his money as he pleases. Maybe he’s a registry guy or maybe it’s his favorite card. Not for us to decide how he spends his money. However, I do think that as an educated group of collectors, we can comment on the card and our perceived value. Finally, I found this card on eBay. The difference in grade comes down to the opinion of two graders. The difference in price comes down to over half a million dollars.

Imagine if the only PSA 10 Gem Mint (card #92) were to go to auction, $1 Million maybe?

It’s not the same card although the concept is generally the same. There are 2 Gehrig’s in the set that look almost identical other than the color of the blue and whiteness of the borders.
