Did anyone manage to score anything good? There were a few bargains and the usual T206 portrait insanity.

Is it just me, or are prices insane?

$17,322 for a Matty Portrait PSA 6.5

$13,099 for a Cobb Green SGC 4

$16,158 for a Cobb Red SGC 6.5

Or is this normal?

Sean

Also $11,000 for a Johnson Port PSA 5

$8,900 for a Young Port PSA 4

The same bidder got the Young and Matty portraits. He was the runner up on the Johnson Port.

I got the Matty Black cap PSA 6 for $3,900, which I thought was a great price. And I got the Donlin Fielding PSA 6.5 for $1,200. Not cheap, but a tough card in high grade.

I don't know if this is the new normal for the portraits, but if it is I know for certain that I won't be upgrading mine.

Nice work! I went 2-6 on the t205s. Both upgrades as I keep working to improve the set! Was hoping to fare a little better but the losses went for silly pricing.

Not so long ago, I thought it was possible for a person with a moderate income to complete the T206 monster minus the big 3 in decent mid grade condition. It has now reached the point where that is not possible. Anyone with less than $25k a year of disposable income is now reduced to subsets or poor condition cards, unless they already have a huge start.

The Young card was not nice enough to warrant the price. The last one was. I am so glad I picked mine up at the national this year.

The green cobb is still a buy in my opinion. I think it is setting precidence for the other big time HOF portraits. It seems demand is through the roof. You can’t give money away in this country right now. It is so hard to find workers let alone quality workers.

Uhhhhh...what?

What? Maybe I did not connect the dots there properly.

Everyone is busy and jacking up the prices to get work done. Sometimes by double and triple what it cost last year.

There are a lot of people right now making a lot of extra disposible income. I am not sure where you live but when I call 30 electricians and when I get 1 phone call back for an estimate on a multi thousand dollar job and it is priced at 300 an hour, that tells me something.

I can not get a paver to call me back, a tree guy, a plumber and the list goes on. Like I said, I can not give my money away.

PWCC is cannibalizing a lot of the competition. Who else on ebay regularly sells high end (pardon the pun) Goudeys and the like? I don't see much besides them. Some of the other usual sources (Probstein), but a lot of his stuff is not auction format.

Noting that bidders of certain types of cards are constantly or exclusively going to PWCC these days hardly surprises me.

I always watch the Gehrig stuff—-maybe not as close as another board member— and I was surprised the 1933 Goudey went so high. Big spread between it and the 1934 Goudey listed on ebay. I had no idea it would trade so high.

I think that has to do with the shunning of any other seller whose name is NOT PWCC or Probstein. Like you said, even Probstein gave up the auctions. With all other sellers being basically ignored, it is not cost effective to sell those items yourself.

In my area the demand for plumbers and electricians seems to outstrip the supply, it's very difficult to find one who will come any time soon or charge a reasonable fee.

Related to this on the stickers, and as someone else already noted, that Young Portrait 4 while nice isn't worth that in my opinion.

From the description - "Shows like a '5' in every way we know to view a T206." - Well, 5s were $3800 cards until Dec-2018 when a 5 PQ became a $10k card. Except this one is actually a 4, not a 5. Four rounded corners, slightly off center to the left = certified high end?

Another example, at least of some description "flowering", the Cobb bat off 4.5. "...four mostly sharp corners...wear to the extreme corner tips...". I would ask that you look again, maybe top left is sorta "mostly sharp" (not really), but the other three are definitely touched with bottom right having a fold (?) and bottom left absolutely rounded. Rounded and sharp do not appear as synonyms anywhere I can locate. Still equals certified high end?

Seems I don't actually understand what these designations actually mean anymore. Seems to me it's just a "prop" used for nice looking cards that has become it's own "thing". We've beaten that discussion to death already, but I guess you can't disagree with the auction results of those stickers.

I got the Matty Black cap PSA 6 for $3,900

I don't know if this is the new normal for the portraits, but if it is I know for certain that I won't be upgrading mine.

I had bid on all the higher grade dark and white caps, but ultimately backed off on all. This was a great looking card, certainly a good price compared to prior two sales over $5k each.

They pointed those out, but I take your point if you mean this "contribution" to not necessarily living up to the sticker.

All of it together is why I dropped out before the final bidding. It's nice, but it's not nice enough to justify that price for me.

I'm criticizing what I consider a somewhat less than honest write up about the card, as well as some skepticism of the consistency of application of standards around how they award their stickers.

In this day and age of high resolution scans, less talk is definitely more. I get it when explaining memorabilia where the story is important and people may not be familiar with the item. With cards honestly I don't need to know how cool or amazing or gorgeous or anything else it is. High quality scan front and back and silence.
