View Full Version : What's Your Favorite Baseball Player's Signature?

These days, signatures are becoming less and less legible. Speaking for myself, mine is still legible ONLY if I take my time and I'm writing on a 'low-tech' surface aka paper, cardboard, etc. These check-out machines have become the bane of my existence.

As far as collecting signatures, I only have experience collecting Baseball players' signatures, mostly on cards.

Of active players, there are a lot that look quite similar to my check-out samples.

Many Old-Timers had very 'neat' legible signatures, though some have aged just as the players themselves have.

My personal favorite was fashioned by, appropriately enough, 'The Mechanical Man' Charlie Gehringer.

Let's see your favorite!

My favorite sig, also happens to me my all time fav player, is Harmon Killibrew. Rarely do I see his autograph that doesn`t look like he took time and made the effort to please the recipient. Maybe 4 or so years ago a fellow 54`er had a sheet with what looked like Harmon actually practicing his sig, had to be at least 12+ examples on the page. Still regret not purchasing it.

Mostly unknown and a vastly underrated autograph, you can tell he worked on it and took pride in writing it. One of my all time faves.

Lived his pre rookie signatures.

This ine was likely signed during spring training of 1938

Maris is my favorite. I doesn’t look like he overthought it. It just came out simple and nice.

Even as a 19 year old in spring of 1957 his autograph was a gem.

T206s are tough to sign with flair. Given a little more room, Speaker and Grove have the nicest signatures in my signed card collection:

Not my favorite player but I have to say the way he signed his autograph is one of my favorites. Enough so that I bought one a few years back. Frank Baker.

The very first one I thought of, aesthetically speaking, when I read the thread title was Gehringer. He had a beautiful signature, even towards the end. Most of the old-timers had nice, legible signatures.

My 1994-Circa Jeter autographed baseball. Very rare.

I have yet to see another single-signed, 1994-Circa Jeter autograph on a baseball.

I know he is modern, but when Ichiro signed his full name it was a thing of beauty. At least to me.

The best baseball autographs, judged by how masterful their signer's penmanship skills were, were 1) Barney Dreyfuss; and 2) Alexander Cartwright.

As far as just enjoyable autographs go I like Gene Lillard's signature but I think an ornate Duffy Lewis (often signed as G.E. "Duffy" Lewis) may be my favorite as it really does remind me of a more intense Walt Disney signature (as you can tell I like the artistic signatures).

Two of the stranger autographs that are hard to even recognize as autographs (unless you know what you are looking at) are former Reds owner John T. Brush and umpire Bill Klem. Just strange looking autographs.

2nd from the top, 1939. I really enjoy the evolution of Ted Williams' signature up to the 1960's. Same with Mickey Mantle - nothing like a 1940's Williams or a 1950's Mantle.

I would say "Nothing like a 1939 Williams", but I'm sure I'll never own another.

Billy Pierce’s signature never varied. It was essentially the same when Bowman used it on their ‘54 and when he signed a card for me a year or so before he passed in 2015.

Two of my favorites, on the same ball, and in black sharpie to boot!;)

They really are two of my favs, though I don't own an example of either.

Also a big fan of The Mechanical Man's signature.

John Brush isn't on this list yet is he? His signature is pretty intricate. This one comes from the CooperstownExpert.com (http://www.cooperstownexpert.com/) website. Brush has his own page (http://www.cooperstownexpert.com/player/john-brush/), as does every Hall of Famer and a couple hundred other baseball people. Many interesting autographed pieces there, most of the guys mentioned on this topic too. Enjoy!
