View Full Version : Why is Roy Ellam on Nashville in the T206 Set?

I have the RPPC for Ellam that was used for his T206 card. It shows him on the Connorsville team, which, according to Baseball Reference, he was on in 1908:

I couldn't help noticing that he didn't join Nashville until 1916, and yet his T206 card lists him with Nashville. Does anyone know why this error was made?

There's been threads about this before. I believe I even started one. Consensus seems to be it's just a mistake and an amazing coincidence if I recall.

Interestingly, there was a guy named Win Kellum that played with Nashville in 1909.

I frantically read those threads... hoping that I didn't have a post in them! :D

Thank you both for posting - I think the Kellum theory might be a good one.

I’m hurt.

I started an Ellam thread in December 2011.

I get “no respect” around here.

I discovered this Connellsville postcard about 12 years ago and knew that it matched up to his T206 while it was still live on an "ebay live" auction (remember those). I sweated that one out but apparently was the only one to notice it. I sold mine to someone on Net54 but don't recall who.

Actually I think it's kind of cool that several of us have "discovered" the same error as it has crossed our consciousness.

With Ellam being in the Southern Associaton in 1909 with Birmingham (1909-15), and the T206 Southern Leaguer's having multiple players for all the Southern Association Teams, except Birmingham (Molesworth), I wonder if Ellam was meant to be the 2nd B'Ham player?? Mobile has 2, Memphis has 2, Atlanta 2, L/R 2, NO 3, and Montgomery has 4 along with Nashville. Perhaps, Ellam was meant to have Birmingham on the card and it was a simple error!? That would have put Nashville down to 3 instead of 4 players represented in T206 set.

Not related - Here is my 1913 Birmingham Team Mini Photo featuring Ellam and Molesworth among some other T210 era players and owner Rick Woodward.

There is no modern day evidence that Foley White played for Houston during the T206 era. I think it is more likely that the modern day evidence is wrong and that Ellam played for Nashville and White played for Houston during the T206 era, but we don't have a record of it today.

There would be a record in the Nashville newspaper archives of Ellam playing there. However it might be the case that no one has looked into yet. I know that the Baseball Reference site online is definitely wrong on Dazzy Vance. He did not play for York in 1912, he was in Superior and newspaper accounts prove this, but they for whatever reason will not change this even though it's been pointed out to them.

I have a had a copy of this postcard for sometime. Traded it once and then got it back. This one has reference to Connellsville on it. At one point it also had Roy's obituary attached but that was lost when it was out of my collection.

Sorry for the poor pictures. Iphone at the bank so the quality wasn't great.

That's the one that used to be in my collection. I did have his obituary and some other ephemera as well. Sorry to hear it got broken up.

Can you believe this state paid half a million dollars to a Colorado advertising firm to come up with that garbage???
