hey guys i just gambled on this E98 Wagner

the pics aren't great, but after comparing to other blue background versions, i thought it was worth a shot. plus i wasn't able to find any fakes in the blue background.

any thoughts? real deal or fake?

I'm not betting my lunch that's it real.

But hope that it is.

Impossible to say for sure without having it in hand, but if it's a fake it's a scary good one. You might've struck gold. Wish he had sold more similar items. Mostly a video game guy.

thanks, any tips to try and authenticate it when it gets here? i don't have any other e98's around to compare it to.

It actually looks authentic. Interested to hear the outcome.

Cool, good luck!

Assuming it's authentic, and grades a "1"...what's it then worth? Just curious, as I do not collect this set.

Hard to say—there is a blue background Wagner on ebay in PSA 2 condition for $1800 so definitely less than that but maybe $700 to $1000 is what I’m guessing

No, I don't think it's real but not sure. Check out the lettering of his name on front. Also, on questionable cards I am never a fan of perfect or almost perfect centering. That said I am not 100% on it so there is a chance :).

ps...in looking at it more it could be the real deal and a good deal if it is!!

Like Leon, the print is the one thing that gives me pause on it. To me the printing looks quite heavy/bolder than normal. However, there are known authentic E98 examples that also have this same heavier printing of the name, so I think it is real. I also like the fact that the registration is slightly off and the way the top layer of the bottom corner is peeled off and toned. If you are going to make a fake, why not use one with better registration?

I'm always hesitant when someone knows enough to put it in a screwdown holder, but not enough to know what they have.

The lettering was the one thing I was concerned about too. But if you look at real ones the type is also fairly bold and dark

I searched endlessly for another reprint in blue background, even went to a popular reprint seller and they had a red but no others. So not an exact science but hoping it’s real for sure!

Thanks! Sorry prob a stupid question what exactly do you mean by “registration”?

registration is the image clarity. Think of it as focus, though with these older cards it also comes down to the successive ink colors lining up correctly on each pass through the press.

My guess is that it's not real, but the images are not good enough to tell for sure.

See how the yellow color bleeds off the top because the sheet wasn't lined up properly when it went through the yellow plate? That's bad registration. Makes the picture of Mantle blurry.

checks of all the e98 characteristics of being real w/o having it in hand.

I just think it might be ok, but then I am always the optimist on what is a close call with this Honus. Let us know the outcome.

I am not an E98 expert, but that looks real to me.

I'm also not an expert, but I can say that I was quite surprised at how bold the captions were on my e98s when I got them in hand. I think the caption looks good on this Wagner in question. I think you may have found a great deal here.

I've handled more than a few E98s over the years and this one looks good to me.

This seems likely original and looks a lot like some of my lower condition E98 cards. My guess is your gamble will pay off. I would, however, return it if it doesn't come with the paper towel.

Well I got the card. I’m no expert but it definitely seems real. First it smells really really old. Second I bought one of the aged reprints online (a red background) and got a black light. While the reprint glows the other one does not. So I guess next step off to PSA!

Keep us posted but, with everything seen, I would go with Peter's vote, right above here....

Worst case you're out some grading and shipping fees assuming Ebay or PayPal honor their guarantee. Not a bad gamble from the comments of those with much more knowledge that I have, although I would have bet against it being authentic from the Ebay pics.
