I was researching something related to these cards and saw that PSA has virtually zero population reported: 3 of the 1948s and 13 of the 1949s. Also has no prices realized on them.

Is this just an unpopular PCL issue or is it really HTF? Looking for any info on what they might be worth. In case you don't know, the 1948 looks like this:

Adam...They are relatively difficult to find, and they have been counterfeited (as far back as the 1970's). Complicating matters is that with their unusual surface, it can be challenging for the graders to get it right. I have purchased several lots over the years from the larger auction houses, which have included some of these counterfeits...Most of the auction houses have made it right....They are relatively stable pricewise, though there have only been a few finds (of real ones) in the last few years...A certain dealer you know always has a few in stock....:)

Thanks Mark. I was aware of the reprints: there are scads of them on eBay, to the point where I wouldn't even consider a purchase outside a TPG holder or from a dealer I know who knows the issue. I was only looking at this issue because I purchased this card recently:

Normally I'd worry that the card itself wasn't authenticated but the signature is spot-on (I've been collecting his signatures for 20+ years: I know a good one) and Lefty died in 1969, so I figured the card was very likely a genuine 1949 SK example I did not have yet.

I can't believe no one has even graded a single Lefty with PSA. Guess I will have to send in my 1948.

Adam...That signature is a good O'Doul and it looks to be from an era close to when the card was issued... From what I can see the card looks good as well.. good contrast rather than the graininess you typically see with the counterfeits

Yeah, I was pretty stoked to find it. Since I collect Lefty and I did not have that card it was a doubly happy find, made even better by the 15% off eBay coupon yesterday.

I guess it's a good time to pop this pic into the mix...

Mark, I checked my notes: guess who sold me the 48 O’Doul in 2009?

I can't imagine where it came from Adam :) ..... Regarding the picture of O'Doul's restaurant... Lefty O'Doul's restaurant on Union Square closed last year...The O'Doul family told me last week that Nick Bovis is opening up a new place at Fisherman's Wharf...Hopefully it lasts many years...

So cool that you collect Lefty! I love learning about people's player collections, especially the less mainstream players.

The card arrived and to paraphrase Seinfeld: it’s real and it’s spectacular
