MC vs. OC

Can anyone shed light on why this card would be a (MC) instead of (OC)? It doesn't look bad enough to me to be called a miscut.

...They (PSA) have their own definitions I reckon....90-10 on the front is off-centered ??; 95-05 and beyond is mis-cut ??....

..If I had checked the box for "no Q's please" , would they have come back as straight 6's??

All 3 of the cards mentioned seem properly graded to me. They have to draw the line somewhere. It appears to be between those 2 52 topps cards.

1) I would not have expected the card at auction to have gotten MC instead of OC.
2) The MC on your 1952 could be on the back, if any part of another card is showing or cut off. Or it could be because of the tiny sliver of a left border you have.
3) No, if you asked for NQ, you might have gotten a 3 on the one on the left and a 4/5 on the one on the right. Each grade has its own rules for centering when not including qualifiers. You can find the guidelines on PSA's website, but they don't/didn't always follow them exactly over the years.

..At that time , (about twelve years ago) SGC was allegedly less strict about centering when determining a final grade so I sent these to them deliberately so as not to get that dreaded qualifier...if I must have an off-centered card , the top-to-bottom is easier on the eyes...side-to-side centering is literally the first thing I notice ( Hi Matty)...

1. On the auctioned '53 Bowman Mantle - Top/Bottom centering would be measured at its worst point which is the upper and bottom left corners. I would guess at that point, the centering didn't achieve 90/10.
2. On the '52 Topps...
Fred Hutchinson - If you look at the L/R centering at the bottom left, there is very little if any white border. MC means that fell less than 90/10, which appears correct to my eyes.
Johnny Schmitz - Thin but enough border on the left to easily meet 90/10, but not enough to meet 70/30 that is required for an 8.
3. If you sent both '52 Topps without qualifiers, you'd still get a MC on the Fred Hutchinson. The Johnny Schmitz would likely get a straight 6, possibly a 7. I'm basing that on guessing the centering likely hits 80/20.
