These 61’s arrived in today’s mail. Is it just me or does this set not get a lot of love? I guess the ‘63 and ‘65 Topps issues would win a design contest over ‘61, but I still like them. This Aaron is cool because it shows you that old Milwaukee uniform with the black tomahawk - a lot of folks forget that it was not always red. And Yogi, while approaching the twilight of his career - still has a sweet smile and there is the classic left field backdrop of original Yankee Stadium.

More than happy with this mail day...and maybe now I’ll pickup some cheaper 61’s to go alone with these...

I love this set. My second favorite behind the '57 set. I like it much better than those other 2. The only 2 reasons I have yet to start working on it is because there are 7 Mantle cards and the high #s. Although I found a few high #s for a really good price. Wound up passing on them as I'm not doing the set though.

If you are doing the set mid-grade though, I've got to imagine it's still a steal in comparison to trying to do '63, '65, or '67. The Mantle #300 in mid-grade is a lot more affordable than the '65 base Mantle #350 (and has a lot better photo too...)

I may start working on this as well - as a Cubs fan, you could do worse in a set that has the RC's of Billy Williams and Ron Santo...:)

You mean how everything here is constantly all about Mickey Mantle and not a single collector ever admits they collect Mantles only because his cards continually carry great monetary value? Yup, I'm still there.

Nice 52, Wynn, Peter. That card seems to have gained a lot of traction since I first joined the site a couple years ago.

Wish my bottom left and top right were in a little better condition like your's, but overall I am pretty happy with my copy as well.

I need a new monitor. I was looking at your scan/pic of it yesterday at work and it is much clearer to see the corners on my work monitor.

Congratulations, Tony, on that beautiful Duke Snider. I have always thought this pose, also used on the 1953-55 Stahl-Meyer Franks cards, was the very best one taken of Duke. His 1954 Red Heart is sweet as well, but I love this one. There's this deep sense of exuberant joy and confidence on his countenance; l love it. Way da go, bro!

If you ever decide you want to learn more about the Dan Dees, I devoted a chapter to them in my book, concentrating on a blazing mint find involving 13 of the 14 Cleveland Indians that were in the set. Same with the Stahl-Meyers, as I recall you were able to get a Mickey Mantle in the last few years.:)

Regardless, I'm happy for your latest acquisition, Tony. Take care.

Totally agree with you. I'll take great centering over dinged corners any day. Although at a 7, there isn't much ding - and when I am picking centering over corners it's usually on PSA 4-6's and not such high ticket items.

Congrats!

... reminds me of my Kuzava, which, to this day is a grade I can't figure out.

Is that some very light spider-creasing through the top of Kuzava's hat? If not, could it be something in the scan?

Wrinkles that can be very difficult to see are usually one of the first suspects on otherwise very nice cards that come back a 5 and surprise you. Mostly they are on the back, but I've seen some 5's that have multiple light wrinkles on the front.

If it's none of the above, then who knows. I've seen a lot of 6's lately that could be 7's. I've argued for a while now that PSA should have some type of service - maybe even make it premium - where the grade your card got is explained in a paragraph or something like that, if they aren't going to do sub-grades like Beckett does for the newer cards. I guess they would see that as skewing their business model, and it would only add to their already ridiculous turnaround times, however. I don't know. I think that back in the early days of TPG's, PSA was probably on par with SGC in terms of strictness. Here lately they seem to be harsher graders - particularly with vintage - to prove some kind of point. Everything seems to be more of a game anymore than taken at face value...

John, I really don't think there is any spider wrinkling/creasing in the hat, but I need to purchase a loupe as my eyes aren't what they once were.
I believe when I talked about this card before, there might have been a little bit of that wrinkling on the back? IIRC, it was hardly noticeable but likely the reason for the grade. The TPG, imo, despite the tiny bit of wrinkling, graded it tough. If I could find all 3's in this condition, I'd purchase them all.

Rekindling the 52 Topps theme that was prevalent earlier in this post. These arrived a few days ago, plus another multiplayer card as well.

Some real beautiful cards so far this month, guys. I'm chomping at the bit to get back to collecting. Soon. :)

Peter, that '64 Giant Bob Gibson is gorgeous. Looking on Ebay at some of the big name guys, I'm shocked that they're not more in demand, from a price point perspective. I know they're an oddity, as far as Topps issues go, but the investor in me says that at some point, these are going to go up in value.

There are a couple gorgeous Mickey Mantles with certified autos. I'd love to own one of those. The Hank Aaron is one of my favorite Hammerin' Hank issues. The Clemente, too.

I wonder why there's no Eddie Mathews, though?
