Yes; 1962 Salada-Junket coins w/shield. NICE by the way! Fairly tough to find with the shield not cracked.

It's always exciting to learn something new. Especially when it relates to a subject you thought you knew a lot about. I picked up this ticket and program. They are from a charity exhibition game billed as the 8th game of the 1971 World Series played at RFK on May 22, 1972. The Pirates were defeated by the Orioles 5-2 on that date. Other than the games location and final score I could not locate any additional I information.

Always wanted to add a Yasiel Puig gamer to my collection. I think he is really funny to watch, plus when he connects, he can send one to the moon.

So naturally, I bought one from a seller on ebay who had no COA and some sketchy feedback. That's ok, right? He threw in some game used (and signed) gloves too!

Seriously, I sent it off to PSA, and it turned out the seller was legit!

Guessing its 1940's or 1950's (not in hand yet) although they had them in the 1930's and 1960's too, but for the 60's the style & wording changed. They actually started in Wrigley in 1928.

Seems to match up pretty well with the ones in the 1938 Homer in the Gloamin' by Gabby Hartnett at Wrigley Field pix and the 1945 World Series with Detroit and the Billy Goat Curse pix.

Again, I've seen the "newer" 1960's and 1970's style cap at auction before, but not this older version.

I picked up this July 14, 1933 SF Seals ticket stub in the recent Mears Auction. This is the game that an 18-year old Joe DiMaggio got a hit in his 50th straight game to break the PCL hit streak record. He would go on to hit in 61 straight games that season. I thought it was a pretty cool Joe DiMaggio related ticket from the hit streak before the hit streak. Seems like it was pretty common for his last name to get misspelled that year. Even the watch the Mayor of SF game him had his name spelled DeMaggio.

From what I could gather this ticket stub was part of a pair of stubs from this game that originated from the DiMaggio family collection and sold by Hunt Auctions in 2006. Another ticket from this game was sold in a separate lot in the same auction and those are the only 3 tix that have surfaced from this particular game.

Not real thrilling, but kind of interesting...

While they both pitched for the Giants, John Montefusco and John D'Aquisto owned a restaurant for a short time. "The Count" was 1975 ROY, threw a no-no in 1976 and hit a HR in his first MLB AB. A'Quisto's claim to fame is that he was the only guy to throw 100mph besides Nolan Ryan, in those days.

Both Johns ended up in Federal prison. Montefusco did two years for spousal abuse before he was cleared and D'Aquisto did 5+ years for investment fraud. A'Quisto later earned his PhD and turned his life around.

Beside the menu, I have their postcard and a matchcover.

I have been collecting Cincinnati Reds game used bats, uniforms, equipment, awards, contracts etc… of players from the 1961 World Series team for some time. Last year I picked up some tough bats (not a function of price, but availability as most would consider them obscure players). I have also acquired some artifacts from Yankee Stadium from that same time period, as well as Yankee uniform items. It occurred to me that I had yet to add a game used bat for a significant 1961 Yankee…at about that same time, I saw this Maris bat was coming to auction. It killed me to move the items I did (good Brooklyn Dodger and New York Giants stuff is still selling strong), but I am very happy with the decision I made. This bat helps to fill out the context of the 1961 World Series, and the larger 1961 season as well.

Nice glove Mike. Good to know there is another one out there. Which years featured the buckled heel?

mikesglove
03-20-2018, 02:52 PM
That's a good question. The Gibson mitt design was patented in 1913 and the snap button heel in 1912. There is an illustration in a 1913 catalog of the original Gibson mitt like yours with no snap heel. Unfortunately I haven't found Rawlings catalog images from 1914 to 1923 on the website:
www.baseballglovecollector.com. Joe Phillips new Rawlings Catalog Source Book lists the original Gibson mitt along side the snap heel Professional model in a 1922 catalog. I would speculate that the Gibson mitt with snap button heel was introduced between 1914 and 1921. I hope to find a catalog illustration some day.

From an auction description:
Connie Mack just loved the elephant logo of his Philadelphia Athletics, as can be seen by this cast iron white elephant made to commemorate the 1911 World Series win by the A's and given away to guests at a celebratory dinner held later that year. The elephant is approximately 3" tall and is standing on a black cast iron base that measures approximately 1" tall and depicts a small baseball diamond on the top. There is engraved writing on all four sides of the base. The front reads, "Athletics, Champions of the World 1911" while the back says, "Dinner, Hotel Astor, New York, December 12, 1911". One side of the base says, "American Base Ball Club of Philadelphia" while the other says, "Baseball Writers Association of America".

The trunk and the tusks are very prone to breaking as well as the white paint chipping

Hey guys.. never really considered myself in that “class”, but it is a ton to spend on a piece of wood, no doubt. The last time it sold it went for like 350k, so I felt fortunate. It takes a pretty understanding wife, that is for sure. She confiscated it when it arrived to give it to me for my birthday - which is next week. So I haven’t even seen it. The huge shipping charge was for insurance. Next week I will post some pictures. No police escort. Just a FEDEX box.

Not sure why uploading the scans isn't working, but I won the "October 1945 Kansas City Royals vs. Kent Parker's All-Stars Official Program w/Jackie Robinson & Satchel Paige" from the Love of the Game Auction.

Items from Jackie's time in the Negro Leagues are few and far in between. It's not clear whether he played in this game (his name is crossed out and the listing makes the assumption that he didn't, though they couldn't find a box score) but still having his name printed on a program from when he was in the Negro Leagues, along with Satchell Paige pitching for his team and Bob Feller on the other side, makes it an interesting piece in my book.

Picked up these 3 display pieces recently: Kansas State Mascot Bank, Chicago Blackhawks Gold Base Nodder, and green 1880's Majolica Pitcher with baseball scene. I was able to get the Majolica pitcher for a song because of the chip on the rim. As I understand it, this Majolica series was the first example of a baseball scene on a piece of pottery. I know the green is fairly common, but still nice to find at a bargain.

I missed winning this on eBay about six months ago but fortunately I was able to win this in Leland’s this weekend for less than my losing bid.

!954 NY Giants spring training and media guide. The recipient's name cracks me up. He sounds like a hoodlum in a Raymond Chandler novel. :D

Picked this up, too. Michael Morse GU bat from 2014.

Mike only played one season with the SF Giants but had quite an impact and hit one of the more memorable home runs in Giants' postseason history. Trailing the Cardinals in the 8th inning of Game 5 of the NLCS, Mike was sent in to pinch hit for Madison Bumgarner. He promptly hit the tying HR. The Giants went on to win that deciding game and later the World Series. Could this be the bat he used to hit that HR???? Nope, that was a Marucci.

First ever snapshot pickup for me. Foreground rookie Snider and Hermanski in 1947. Background Jackie Robinson, though it oddly looks like he's fielding warm-ups at second base, a position he didn't play in 1947, if memory serves. Crappy clarity on my scan.

A cool, little snapshot from a lifelong Cubs fan (judging by some quick internet research).

I'd start one but have nothing to share. It's funny, these Pick Up threads usually seem to get started one minute after midnight on the first day of the month! :p

I'll continue the March/April pickup thread. I picked up this 1921 Leslies magazine this morning at the flea market showing the grips of Babe Ruth, Rogers Hornsby, Ty Cobb, George Kelly, Harry Heilmann, Ed Roush and Fred Williams. Pretty neat item.
