Off eBay I picked up the homeplate Umpire's lineup card from 05/12/84 from an Orioles/A's game which happened to be the last appearance of Jim Palmer in a MLB game (unbeknownst to the seller). Just the other day I had Palmer sign/inscribe it accordingly:

Great start to the month Al. Congratulations! Looks like this is one of those pins with the small baseball located right after his name. Would love to know if this was a manufacturing mark that means these were all made by the same company.

Thanks Mike Funny could be an east coast thing and might be the distributor mark as the ones I see that have it are the Phillies, Pirates, Reds, and Orioles... My have distributed for all these teams. Your guess is as good as mine!;)

With a big thank you to Paul "pherbener", I have now completed my m101-2 set with the arrival today of Mr. Ty Cobb.

I need 27 more of the m101-1 set, and I have also completed the m101-7-8-9 sets.

Thrilled with this pickup. The Apr 14, 1918 edition of the Cleveland Sunday Leader Rotogravure Pictorial Supplement, showing the smiling faces of the Cleveland Indians. Measures about 16.5" x 22" and is in fantastic shape for a 100 yr old newspaper!

One of my first pickups of the year is this 1907 Yale vs Harvard game ball. It was the deciding game 3 of their annual 3-game championship, final game being played on neutral territory at the Polo Grounds. The ball is a Spalding Official League Ball...quite rare and exciting in its own right. Notations on the ball include score, date and place, as well as woeful riffs on poetry and song of the day :p...so I would think this actually came from a losing Yale player. The signature on the ball looks to be that of a Yale player as well.

https://i.imgur.com/TVgqylk.jpg

By the way, scanning newspapers re: the game I came across one of the funniest paragraphs ever banged out on an Underwood. So...the first half of the game was played in a light rain, and then a downpour continued for the remaining innings (which incidentally explains the loose stitching on the ball). From the NYT, June 30:

I just picked up this exceedingly rare full, unused ticket from 9/9/48 at NY Giants.
On this day, Brooklyn Dodgers fire-balling rookie hurler Rex Barney no-hit the hometown favorite NY Giants 6-0. 4 K's and 2 BB.

As background, ticket stubs from this game surface from time to time, although they are somewhat rare.
Full tickets to this game are super tough. I have seen perhaps 3 full tickets to this game enter the hobby through the years. Two of the three were in pretty beat up shape IMHO, and I passed on both.
This guy is the first really nice one that I have ever seen. I had to own it in my collection...

Many thanks to net54 board members Mike, Charles and Joe for all making sure that I saw this ticket and pointing out the auction to me.
Heads ups are always appreciated as it really does take a village to build a great collection. ;):)

It's really gratifying to have so many collector friends keeping an eye out for me & I'm eternally grateful!!

I picked up a large grouping of letters from the late 1800's of which most dealt with the early oil industry in Pennsylvania. However, within the group were a couple of letters relating to base ball. This letter was written by John O. McClintock. McClintock became an attorney and also an investor in the oil industry. He also played catcher for a strong regional team, the Meadville Mutuals. This letter, however, had to do with some humorous activity in a game in 1876 between the Allegheny team and the Philadelphia Athletics of the newly formed National League. Wish I had access to a newspaper that might better explain why they were trying to arrest Russ McKelvy (who played a couple of short stints in the National League).

July 20, 1876

"...the news I have to communicate are briefly these: last Monday morning John Scheafnocker, one of our constables ... went down to Allegheny and just as McKelvy was going into his position to play ball, arrested him and was going to drag him off to the train and bring him up here again but in that he was defeated. An alderman was there who took temporary bail for the appearance of McKelvy at his office at 7 o'clock of that evening. As soon as that was done, McK stepped back to his position and went to work and pitched against the famous Athletics of Phila. The score was 4 to 0 in favor of the Athletics. They got 8 base hits on McK and the Alleghenys got 7. The 4 runs were made in the 4th inning. At 7 o'clock McK went before the alderman, waived a hearing, and gave bail for his appearance here in August. Madison Bunce made the complaint upon which the warrant was issued. I may go down to Pittsburgh next week. If I do I will see what the situation of affairs is...."

Recently I picked up a nicely scored program to Johnny "Double No-Hit" Vander Meer's ML debut. The really cool thing was that it was poorly described on eBay, which set up a great opportunity to finally find this long-time want at an unbelievable price.

On April 22, 1937, Reds rookie southpaw hurler Johnny Vander Meer quietly entered the game as a pinch runner in the 9th inning.
Unfortunately, the hometown Reds ended up on the losing side of a offensive barrage by both teams. The St. Louis Cards prevailed 14-11 over the Reds

Clint, where did you get the bronze from? Is it a repro of the original? Incidentally, mine come from the original owner who was given the statue by Walter Johnson himself.

Ulrich Dunbar Walter Johnson Statue, only a handful known

To my knowledge, only two of these have ever hit the market, one in Legendary in 2012 and Memory Lane in 2013. The Legendary example appeared again in 2015, this time with Heritage. For some reason, Legendary ended up buying back their example from the consignor, Kent Feddeman, and Doug Allen wanted to defray the expense of that by selling bronze examples. Events intervened (!), though, and the program never got beyond the production of a handful that his wife sold on eBay two years ago, after which the original went to auction with Heritage. Bob, do you know if yours is the Feddeman (Legendary/Heritage) example? If so it should have come with an original photo of Johnson posing for Dunbar with a caption written by Johnson's wife.

Hank, thanks for the information, I was not sure about the details of the "new" statues and I appreciate you filling in the blanks.

I believe mine is fresh to the market as its been with the original owner for 60 or 70 years. It was actually a gift from Walter Johnson to a friend and was passed down from the friend to his daughter etc.

Thanks again

Hey, Chris: I have an Associated News Service poster with that image dated Oct. 27, 1924.

Bob: The article that accompanied the picture of the bunch of them said that a total of 50 were produced. I've always assumed they were sold to defray the cost of Dunbar's work when the big statue never got authorized.

Clint: I think the red "W" was painted on after the fact, I've only seen the one like that.

Excited to pick up these trophy balls from the 1903 and 1904 Army - Navy football game as well as an unused ticket to the 1904 game. Not sure if I should leave them as is or have the refurbished.

It never ceases to amaze me what’s “out there.” I would leave them alone. They’re fantastic.

Picked these up at the Houston TriStar show this past weekend. I collect Orioles publications and was lacking both All Star programs. Now all I need for a complete run of Orioles guides/yearbooks etc are the '54 and '56 media guides.

I paid dearly for it but I didn't know when I'd find another one in nice condition. And it came with this:

The dealer had this for sale as well so I made him an offer for the pair and he accepted. Which made me think I could have made a lower offer. :)

It also came with a ticker stub.

Great pick ups! I love older programs & yearbooks.

1952 Ted Wilks shot used for 1953 Topps. Two-time World Series champ and had a near no-no. Not quite the back-to-back no-nos like the man above.

No worries Hank, I knew what you meant😁.

I’ve been after one of these, still in the bag, for a while. This was the first bobbin’ head ever. They produced Giants, D**gers, Braves and White Sox. 98 cents in 1960. You can see how the color base series got its mold.

To celebrate the Eagles finally winning a Superbowl, I picked up a full run of home ticket stubs from 1960, the last time the Eagles won a NFL championship.

Recent pickup I finally got around to taking some pictures, if anything it is a bit nicer than I remembered it being. No glove, tag or anything else inside. I had posted about this in the BST and wanted the people that asked to see it had a chance if they forgot to check back there. I'd love to find the glove that originally came with it, there are low grade examples available but I'd like a nice blue one.

I have no idea why the pictures are sideways here but they are oriented normally on my website?

I'm really stoked to have added this circa 1930's 36" Ernie Lombardi H & B "Blue Streak" bat to my Vander Meer "double no-hit" collection.
"The Schnozz" was Vandy's catcher for both of his back-to-back no-hitters on June 11th and June 15th, 1938.

This bat will be a nice complimentary piece and will join two Vandy model bats that I have in my collection.

Can any of our resident bat experts share what they know about this particular Lombardi model bat being called a "Blue Streak"? I'm guessing it's because Lombardi could hit up a blue streak (career .300 hitter, but arguably the slowest runner in baseball history), but I am curious. Any help that anyone can provide would be greatly appreciated! ;)

Picked up these 2 WWII programs. Bummed that I lost the other 2 (which were larger size). If the winner of those is here, I'd love to see if there's a deal to be made.

Congrats Jeff, I had my eye on those scorebooks as well. I'm very happy that you won those. All of these 1944 Central Championship scorebooks are exceedingly tough to find. To be able to score two is a HR IMHO.

I'm sorry Jeff, I suppose I am guilty as charged... :o

I was happy to finally be able to add a nice scorebook from game 4 of the 1944 Central Pacific Area Baseball Championship in Hawaii.
Originally the brainchild of Admiral Chester Nimitz, this WWII baseball championship pitted the Navy All-Stars vs. the Army All-Stars. Due to many MLB stars entering WWII to support the war effort, Nimitz realized that creating this Championship Series would be an excellent idea to entertain the troops and boost morale.

Game 4 was essentially the Series clincher for the Navy which ran the table mostly on the back of great pitching from two MLB pitchers that would hurl two no-hitters in a single season: Johnny "Double No-Hit" Vander Meer in 1938 and Virgil "Fire" Trucks in 1952. This game was attended by 10,000 enthusiastic servicemen that were fortunate enough to witness the game played on September 26th, 1944.
Here is a recap of the clinching 4th game of the series:

HONOLULU – Winning the first four games, the navy captured the mythical championship of the armed forces from the Army in the Pacific World’s Series, chiefly through superior pitching. Although the Bluejackets won the title by the sweep, the three other contests in the series were played for the benefit of men in other sections of this area.
A home run by Ken Sears in the first half of the twelfth inning at Fort Schofield, Oahu, clinched the third contest, 4 to 3, for the Navy, and the Bluejackets made it four straight at Naval Air Station, Kaneohe Bay on September 26th, 10 to 5.

Definitely can't begrudge you that one for your Vander Meer collection. The one's I won were the smaller ones (only 4 pages) and one was from a different series, but still definitely pleased to have won them. I find these programs and barnstorming programs to be extremely cool. On some level in my mind programs are really only for "official" games and it still surprises me sometimes when I come across these items that they even exist.

Congrats on a great pickup!

Thanks Jeff!
This Championship Series crosses a few collecting themes that I think are very cool. WWII baseball, a series dominated by double no-hit pitchers, Vander Meer specifically, the deep talent of MLB players, etc.
BTW,
I believe we have a duty to carry this WWII baseball collecting theme forward, FWIW. When history isn't preserved, people forget...
