Hey Guys--

I'm a hall-of-fame collector, have plenty of tobacco cards but don't have any other E98's.

I just bought this one on the spur of the moment:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/1910-Set-of-30-Ty-Cobb-10-/222788294948?hash=item33df379924%3Ag%3A44cAAOSwyGZ aSsqd&autorefresh=true&nma=true&si=v1sLpKyOA5HcMwQmA0JCdOTXd7s%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557

Does it look authentic to you?

I realize that the seller's lack of feedback does not strengthen his credibility.
But he's been around since 2009, and so I decided to gamble.

I haven't paid for it yet. Would like to hear some opinions first.

If I do buy it and get it, I'll look at it under a microscope and should be able to tell if it's genuine or not.

Thanks for your input.

An e98 Cobb for $100? I think your answer is right there. My condolences.

Uh-oh.

I seem to do this kind of thing every year or two.
Thank goodness for this forum,
and thanks to each of you for your replies.

I really did do this on the spur of the moment, first seeing it with five minutes left.
But the front of the card looked good to me.

Is there anything about the scans themselves that make you think the card is phoney?

On close inspection, I'm not so confident about the back.

to me the appearance and quality of the stock is just bad...usually give away to a fake...additionally the print quality of the front...image and type scream fake to me as well!

The image quality on the front isn't great but what really gives it away are all of those little cracks/lines on the back. They are common to a lot of the fakes on eBay that might seem ok at first glance.

Well, that guy didn't buy my fake, let me try again...

The print on the back of all e98s is a light brown, not a black. Sorry.

the tell-tale sign to me was the bright white color of the cardboard beneath that crease.

I am chastened
and feel like an idiot, deservedly so.

Thank you all for your input.
I hope not to repeat this again.

If it makes you feel any better, had it been real, I am pretty sure exposing your $100 win on the auction would have opened up for someone here to slide in and steal your deal. I am not sure how many or who would admit they would do it, but there is around 100% chance the offers to have them cancel your sale and sell to them would have existed. For that reason, these threads typically start after it is received, but then you would be 7-10 days with ebay getting your cash back through returns once confirmed as fake.

I guess you could look at the history of the seller and see if they have sold a few similar items before.
