View Full Version : The bunt thread

It's about time we had a thread about bunting. Nothing more selfless and all for the team than the good old deadball era standby the bunt. Share cards, postcards, photos, etc. that depicts players caught in the act of bunting. Bonus points if it depicts a Hall of Famer or if outside the deadball era. Here is a start (both not mine)...but note I already have bonus points.

Richie Ashburn drag bunting (circa 1951). Richie was fast going to 1st base......only 3.0 seconds.

I asked Richie this when I got this photo autographed: " Richie.... who was the fastest going down the line to 1st base ? "

Richie replied..... " Every year during the 1950's, the sportscasters would time Mickey Mantle (batting Left-handed) and I
with a precision stop-watch. Both of us did it in exactly 3.0 seconds. "

One or two of these, Hornsby for instance, may or may not qualify as bunt poses, and no one knows what the hell Leard is doing.

A virtual bunter's paradise has been posted...keep them coming.

I especially like the 1939 W711 of Frey...I didn't remember any post deadball/pre-WW2 cards that showed bunters. And I have this card. Thanks David.

I don't think anyone has ever figured out what is going on with Leard, but I am pretty sure I have run into a few striking this pose on a crowded subway train before.

And this thread has inspired me to change my avatar...sometimes bunting is the best way to protect the one you love.

This made me curious about the records, and found it interesting to see the difference in the game over the years.

The current active leader for Sacrifice Hits (Sacrifice Bunts) is Elvis Andrus with 100, with the second place being Clayton Kershaw with 89. Yet this only ranks them 395 and 488 all time respectively.

The leader is Eddie Collins with 512 a record that may never be broken as the second place is Jake Daubert with 392. So Eddie Collins has more of a lead over second place than any current player has over their entire career (120 vs 100).

Thanks, Ed. Not original, Ebbets Field Flannels replica cap and jersey. One or another of my card collecting buddies, I forget whom because of my CRS, mocked up the digital card.

Hat tip to the OP for a very cool thread.

Can anyone top the four 1909 Obak cards that feature bunting? Breaking out the calculator, .053333(etc) percent of this set lays down a bunt. Sure, a ten card set that has one bunter would blow the 1909 Obaks out of the dugout, percentage-wise, and with a higher WAR #, and we will accept this, but hopefully folks can also provide other bigger sets as well that are practically bursting with bunters.

In todays game... the only time bunting seems to matter is in the playoffs and most of the players asked to bunt have no idea how to execute.

WOW. Both the Van Haltren and that Mitchell are the favorite entries on this thread. Are those your photos/negatives? Phenomenal. And yes, I'd LOVE to have that pano and the composite photos on the back wall there in the Mitchell photo.

Thought I would revive this thread because I came across this incredibly odd 1954 Dixie Lid card of Gil McDougald bunting (I assume that is what is going on with Gil...his technique is unique to the extreme).

Feel free to wave the bunt banner on high and add to this celebration of bunting.

Here is one of the most gorgeously composed cards of all time, the 1962 Bell Brand of Willie Davis that artfully displays his drag bunting skills.
