Just received this albumen photo from England. I assume it is soccer, but no cleats on shoes and the hats don't make much sense.

The hats were part of the uniform, though not used during play. The knit stocking cap was common as was the cricket style cap.

As for the boots - from a site on the history of football boots:

Players would wear their hard, leather work boots, which were long laced and steel toe-capped as the first football boots. These football boots would also have metal studs or tacks hammered into them to increase ground grip and stability.

As laws become integrated into the game in the late 1800’s, so saw the first shift in football boots to a slipper (or soccus) style shoe, with players of the same team starting to wear the same boots for the first time. Laws also allowed for studs, which had to be rounded. These leather studs, also known as cleats, were hammered into the early football boots, which for the first time moved away from the earlier favoured work boots.

Thanks. I have seen a lot of 1800's soccer team albumens, but never the stocking cap. Also could not find any examples googling 1800's British soccer team photos.

I think the image is a rugby team.
If you compare your photo with this British late-19th century Keens Mustard tin with Rugby scene... the uniforms look very similar, including the toques.

I hope this helps.

That was my first impression on this also except for the fact that the ball is on the floor and it looks like a football (soccer ball) and not a rugby football. The first ones to use a rubber bladder, made by Richard Lindon in the 1840's, were slightly oblong (buttonball).

Same thoughts here. I will post a close-up of the ball later - it appears to be round, but I will be interested to hear your opinions.

Thanks Brent and Michael. This is out of my sports wheelhouse, as I generally only collect baseball (anything old) or football action.

I was fortunate to recently add this really nice ticket stub to HOF'er Hoyt Wilhelm's no-hitter against Don Larsen and the NY Yanks 1-0 on 9/20/58 @ Baltimore.
Hoyt Wilhelm is known as a knuckleballing relief specialist over his great career that spanned over 1000 games, but he actually started out as a starting pitcher.
Tickets to Wilhelm's no-hitter are very scarce. I know of only 3 that I am aware of in the hobby and I now own two of them.

Good question.
I now have tickets to 206 different no-hit games dating back to 1901.
296 no-hitter games have been pitched through 2017.
147 of my no-hit tickets are signed by 153 different pitchers as some no-hitters were combo no-hitters that involved more than one pitcher.
33 of the 206 no-hit tickets were to games pitched by HOF pitchers...

Here's one guy that has pitched two no-hitters so far.
Congrats on your World Series win with the Astros JV... :)

You just reminded me that I should pick up an 1800's frame to put the photo in.

I was surfing Astros stuff on ebay during the World Series when I spotted the following item - a program from the first game I ever went to, even scored (Marichal threw a complete extra-inning game). What are the odds? Marichal threw 25 complete games that year, 3 were extra innings. This one went 11 but the scorer gave up after 10.

Scott, great collection! I was wondering, since so many of the teams don't print tickets for their season ticket holders, is it more difficult to find no-hitter tickets for games pitched recently than for games pitched in the good old days?

Thanks Rick!
There is no doubt that teams no-longer printing tickets is going to make collecting my theme extremely challenging moving forward. It's really sad because it eventually will lead to the death of collecting a theme like this.
When this happens I've come to the conclusion that I will have to focus my collecting to only vintage tickets.

Re; your question, each scenario has its own unique set of challenges.

In the good old days, fans didn't frequently save their tickets because they were often viewed as yesterday's trash and were tossed. To add to this, WWII saw paper items of all types disappear due to the war effort. Finding vintage tickets is a bit like finding a needle in a haystack (as I know you're aware of) since you collect Koufax tickets. For this reason I believe that vintage tickets will always have value because of limited supply and increasing demand.
The amount of baseball ticket collectors in the hobby has increased dramatically since 1998 and vintage tickets, like other memorabilia, still rules the roost IMHO.

Modern cardboard season tickets are infrequently actually being used by many seat holders due to e-tickets, leading to a prevalence of perfect mint tickets that are not torn like their earlier predecessors. This makes for easier collecting, but reduced potential for ever becoming a collectable that increases in value.

Even though this may be a crazy analogy, I actually see collecting vintage tickets to be a bit like collecting antique milk bottles. Eventually neither may exist, but there will still be collectors because of the novelty of them being reminiscent of a bygone era...

Not many people will recognize his name, but for those that do will appreciate it. I recently acquired this 1930s Oscar George "Ox" Eckhardt Hillerich & Bradsby game used bat. Very heavy use shown with countless ball marks, stitch marks, and slight dead wood suggesting this gamer was deployed for full service!

Eckhardt holds the all-time professional baseball record for batting average, counting both major and minor league stats. Eckhardt .367 career batting average ends up fractionally ahead of #2 Ty Cobb, who’s career .366 is lowered marginally by his minor league stats.

That fact is a tremendous thing to know, and the bat is a superb piece, too. Is it part of a theme of your collection? Such as players whose stats surpass Cobb's stats in one category? Minor league pheenoms?

It's always cool to see photos that inspired cards and images on other memorabilia. This one is fantastic.

Thanks R. J., It's about 3 1/2" x 6". There is I believe a similar yet larger display that I have been looking for for a while now that has more color and graphics but it has not come up for auction anytime soon.

I was recently invited by the show promoter of the annual Thanksgiving Moeller High School baseball card show in Cincinnati to come check it out as his guest. Regionally this show is really well known for it's large turnout focused on Reds collectors everywhere.

Fortunately I was able to pick up a few really nice items, but the highlight was scoring this Charles Conlon Type I photo of Reds no-hit pitcher Hod Eller.
Eller pitched his no-hitter against the St. Louis Cards on May 11, 1919. He also was a member of the 1919 World Series Champion Cincinnati Reds and won 2 of the games in the infamous Black Sox series. I believe that this photo originates from the 1919 or 1920 season.

One curiosity is the fact that the photo has both the stamp of Charles Conlon and Paul Thompson. I am certainly not as well versed on early vintage photos on this board, but was wondering if this was very common?
Any help that you could give me would be greatly appreciated. :)

I love the image and it's the first Type I Conlon photo that I've ever added to my no-hit collection.

Great Eller photo! I like Eller because he always looks like a badass. My two cents - it is an original Conlon which was “borrowed” by Paul Thompson. It looks to have been captured at the Polo Grounds so it is either photographer’s backyard. I would guess that both photogs received credit for this image at different times of its use.

Roger Bowman. The best part is the jersey had a vintage number change from 38 to 28. While a draw back for some, this is huge as the #2 will be used to complete the restoration of my 1951 Leo Durocher home jersey.

Great info, Curt! Thank you.
I definitely agree that Hod Eller looked like a badass. He was an Indiana raised farm boy, from what I've read. Although he didn't pitch for many years, he had a very solid performance with the exception of his last year where injuries likely were the root issue. His career ERA was really quite good from what I've seen.

I asked my wife, "Who holds onto hotel soap from 70 years ago?" Her answer was "hoarders."

The Giants owned this place and conducted Spring Training there in the 40s and 50s.

I guess the same people who hold onto complimentary items from the Giants' next hotel and Spring Training site (1960s). The white "rain bonnet" is my latest pickup. I also have all kinds of paper ephemera from this place.

Was able to acquire these two scarce pins recently. The Yankees Old Times Day was obtained from a Board Member who was nice enough to offer it to me for a reasonable price. The Cubs I got from Hake's Auction and had been in the Muchinsky Collection. It had come up on eBay several years ago and Paul outbid me. I was able to buy it and eight other Cub pins from the auction for less than Paul gave for this pin alone. I was surprised and happy!

Happy to add this type 1 of Ruth from his 1923 season with President Harding.

Back caption says "President sees Babe Ruth hit homer and Yankees defeat of Washington"

Congratulating him after homerun between innings

From the year of Ruth's highest batting average, OBP, Walks and MVP award. Plus, the Yankees first year in the stadium and first championship! Great piece for a Yankee and Ruth fan!

Warren Harding died August 2, 1923.................wonder what is date of photo?

I checked the 1923 Yankee box scores. Ruth didn't hit a HR on the road against Washington. He did hit 3 HR's at Yankee Stadium vs. Washington. He hit HR #2 on 4-24-23; HR #15 on 7-2-23; HR #16 on 7-3-23. With the bunting shown in the photo I would assume the photo was taken on July 2nd or July 3rd (Independence Day Yankee homestand). If so, it was one month before Harding's death.

I did some more research. President Harding attended the Senators game on 4-24-1923 for the inaugural season at Yankee Stadium. The date of the photo is certainly April 24, 1923.....3 1/2 months before Harding's death.
