Seller gives this title in his description AFTER SPEAKING WITH EBAY. Isn't that against ebay policy? (listing it as unknown)

And this is a really crappy looking fake which unsuspecting? folks are bidding on...

Scammers often quote eBay rules that don't exist, such as this one. eBay's rule is if you don't know what it is, you can't offer it for sale. Except for the T206 Wagner, cards don't have to be graded to be offered for sale on eBay, but the seller does have to say what they are (original or reprint). Any time a seller says a card is 'unverified' or 'I can't tell,' he's not supposed to be offering it for sale on eBay.

.." so per ebay policy I'm gone call it a re-print although PSA can't confirm it is"

...this phrase was in that PSA ?AUTHCT Ruth auction description last week.....it was deleted by the seller after a few posts about the situation here on 54...

"No returns ... cards (sic) is being purchased as is with no guarantees."

Yeah, he knows that he's selling a fake.

Don't assume the people selling fakes are trying to rip buyers off. Sellers are selling counterfeits to related buyers and having eBay/PayPal refund them under the buyer protection. This way the seller/buyer is able to split the money.

I ran into this with a 1952 Topps Billy Martin. Didn't even realizing the Martin's were being counterfeited until I received it. So I opened the normal buyer return and immediately received a reply from the seller.

seller: My PayPal account has been suspended so I will have to send a certified check.

Me: I will just go through the normal eBay returns.

Now this seller had positive feedback on quite a few counterfeits so he is defrauding eBay/PayPal.

I received the certified check and cashed it and later received the buyer protection refund, now I have twice the refund. He messaged me asking if I had received two refunds and to return one, which I did not reply. If I would have returned one, the scammer would have had two payments and returned one.

I called eBay to try and return the buyer protection refund and somehow had an English speaking customer service person.

It seems eBay/PayPal really does not care about the fakes being sold because the higher their revenues the higher the can charge for advertising. They have an allowance for fraudulent activity and as long as it's within the quarterly range, they're fine.

I kept the extra payment so I guess I'm a little at fault...but I did try.

Larry, that's an interesting story, but it doesn't change the fact that the seller is knowingly selling a fake. Whether he is ripping off the buyer or ebay, he's still a scumbag.

I absolutely agree! My experience just shows another problem with eBay's protect the buyer at all cost mentality.

I know sports cards are just a drop in a bucket compared to what is
sold on ebay but they use to have people like Dan McKee who policed
these auctions until they decided they didn't need their opinions anymore.

This auction is a joke besides it being an obvious aged reprint the Red
Cobb portrait wasn't printed in the 150 series so no it's not unknown
it's a @%##$!* reprint.

And now it's over $200 by what looks like a possible legitimate bidder.

If the seller really got that advice from eBay, which I can believe, it is a major departure from their former policy. I can't quote that policy word for word, but essentially it stated that sellers cannot disclaim knowledge of authenticity of an item listed on eBay. A few years ago, I brought that up a few years ago when eBay started giving sellers the "unknown" option along with "original" and "reprint/reproduction." My point was that the new option was at odds with their existing policy that sellers cannot disclaim knowledge of authenticity. But they never did anything about it, and I'm afraid that former policy doesn't exist any more.

I wish I could find a number of Cobb's at an antique store.

He also has a game used Encarnacion jersey with a "Clubhouse Attic" LOA. Looks like he is Clubhouse Attic.

Recently I had high hopes that ebay was going to start getting more serious with anti-fraud efforts. I heard they were ramping up some programs they used to have. So far what I have seen hasn't been very reassuring..
This seller could probably make a living at selling fake Red Cobbs :)...
