I just picked up a 1933 Goudey "Jimmy Dykes". Great looking card.

It makes me ask. Should Jimmy Dykes be in the Hall of Fame?

Jimmy Dykes facts : He batted over .300 five times and led the American League in assists once at second base and twice at third base, ending his career sixth in AL history in games at third base (1,253), and seventh in putouts (1,361), assists (2,403), total chances (3,952) and double plays (199). When he retired, he ranked eighth in AL history in games played (2,282), and ninth in at bats (8,046). He holds the Athletics franchise record for career doubles (365), and formerly held team marks for career games and at bats. He went on to become the winningest manager in White Sox history with 899 victories over 13 seasons. He later became the first manager in history to win 1,000 games without capturing a league pennant.

He was an average hitter OPS+ 96. He was average defensively dWAR 4.0. He was an average manager, .477 winning percentage, no pennants. The Hall of Fame is for the best, not those that play and manage for a long time.

HOF Is there to tell the history of the sport. He could be mentioned at places in the hall of fame but being inducted as a player, I say no way, and I am very lenient on who should and should not be in. Longevity itself should not be enough for HOF induction. Maybe the A's and or Whitesox HOF but not the Baseball Hall Of Fame.

NO -- but the Hall of Very Good would love to have him.

People such as Dykes, Buck O'Neil, many coaches (they are not eligible) such as Frankie Crosetti and Charley Lau, etc. should be in a contributor section where they are not HOFers but honored for their lifelong baseball service.

I say kick Ed Barrow out and give his place to Jimmy....or any of a couple dozen other players.;)

Not sure why we are even having this discussion.

If inducted, Dykes wouldn't be the worst guy in there. But I would definitely say his absence doesn't detract from the Hall. In my mind, he dwells somewhere above Common Player but below Star.

Am I the only one surprised at how high B.J. Surhoff is in that list?

Jimmy Dykes is certainly a historical figure in Baseball, probably moreso as a manager. In terms of Hall of Fame, I'm really unsure, bordering on no. I'd like to research his contributions to the game and to his teams forst before makeing a conclusive statement. I dont want to get too hung up on stats alone as they tell only half the story.

I'd prefer seeing Charley Grimm in the Hall instead though.
