NOTE to Leon: Please delete if you feel that this isn't appropriate.

My personal limit is $6K, which I paid for a Goudey Ruth.

After that purchase, I decided that would be the highest I'd go for any future purchases.

I don't know why it would be an inappropriate question other than many folks won't want to say. I have paid over 20k a few times.

I've spent $17k (Lionel Carter's T206 Plank in Mastro 2007). I no longer have it. I was also outbid once on a signed T206 Cobb at $26,000.

I think you'd get more responses as a poll:

$25k or higher
$10-$25k
$5-$10k
$1k-$5k
Under $1k

I'm a small fish in this sea of mega collectors...$225 for me back in 1990 on a 1972 Nolan Ryan....back when Beckett High was king. Ouch.

I am thinking of plunking down $600 or so for the '48 Leaf Ruth.....but my palms get sweaty just thinking about it!

$185... for a highlander Cotton Cigarette back in poor condition. My one card that has a little worth is a 1903 E107 Breiach-Williams - Jimmy Williams. LOL, I paid $25.00 for it back in the late 70's ???

I actually just spent the most a few days ago! It was $1,675, although, I got $100 in eBay bucks, 5% back from ebates, used discounted eBay gift cards, so TECHNICALLY it wasn't that much 😊 It was on a 1983 Star Dominique Wilkins Autographed card graded gem mint.

$15,500 for a 1914 Cracker Jack Mathewson in last year's REA.

I bid $120,000 two weeks ago for that T206 Cobb/ Cobb back in Memory Lane. But I was absolutely certain that my bid would never hold up (and of course it didn't, the card went for $228K). :D

...if you look in your feedback section of "left for others" and go 200 per page and go back a few pages you'll jog your memory a bit....memorable buys are , well , memorable...

Probably only about $140 on a card so far, but only because I haven't yet run across some of the rare backs I'm looking for on T206s.

The most I have spent is about $450. The most I would spend is $2000, but that could be higher if the deal involved a partial trade, installment payments or other forms of creative financing!

Section103

$550.

I'll be hard pressed to ever spend more than a grand on one card. There are a handful of cards I can see spending 600-800 one day in the future.

I don't think that I'd ever spend more than $500 on a card (it's just cardboard after all!). Usually I like the under $50 cards and I like the more obscure players.

I have spent several thousand on different cards, but over the years my
collecting focus has gravitated toward early Red Sox material, particularly the
1912 team. With that said I imagine I would go as much as 5-10K for a Carl Horner "Smoky Joe" Wood. He has always been my favorite ball player since meeting him as a young Red Sox fan in the early 1980's and this is the Holy Grail on my want list!

Just curious...Where did you meet him? He was my mother's best friends grandfather. I met him several times but I was under 10 years old at the time and the significance was lost on me. It wasn't until I saw Field of Dreams and heard him mentioned that I realized what a stupid kid I was. By then I was 20 years old. My mother died in 2000 so I'm no longer in touch with the family.

Depends on the card. I'd spend whatever I had to if the deal is right. I know I declined to spend $17k on a 1948 Leaf Graziano but that was also me not wanting to fly across the country to make the deal (crippling fear of flying at the time). Offer me one today at that price and I am booking a flight and arranging the cash at the other end.

Hi,
My family had friends in New Haven CT (we lived right down I-95 in NY) who knew Joe Wood. When they found out I was a Red Sox fan (in "enemy" territory) and was very much into the history of the team they arranged for us to meet him. He was in his 90's but still very much with it and very gracious and nice
to an impressionable baseball fan and young pitcher. I find it amazing that I met and spoke with one of the great hurlers in history. Even the great Walter Johnson said,"...no man alive can throw any harder than Joe Wood."
A couple of years later I also had the pleasure of seeing that same elderly gentleman honored at Fenway Park on Old Timer's Day.
Over the years I've accumulated some nice Smoky Joe pieces including a circa 1912 charcoal and pencil portrait of Wood in his immortal season that is my favorite, but I wish I could have afforded his 1912 World Series pendant or engraved watch.

Very cool story. My mother was born and raised in New Haven. I believe her friend, Patty, lived in West Haven. Wish I had a do over there.

I think I spent roughly $3500 on a 52 Topps Mantle. Got outbid on another card at around $9,000, but would have had to sell some stuff to pay for it. Those were different times--working for private practice but now a government employee--and that particular Mantle is long gone.

$300 is the most I have ever spent on a single card in the UK. This was for a raw
Imperial Tobacco hockey card of Newsy Lalonde. I think it is a C56 it is #36 of 36. My estimate grade of this card would be psa 4.5 - purchased at our annual convention in 2016.

$3,850 and I remember shaking when I saw my offer was accepted. If it weren't for PayPal Credit, I don't think I would ever make big purchases. Spreading the pain over six months makes it more palatable. That said, I don't think I will ever come near paying that much for a card again.

It was pertaining to why some companies don't advertise here. And I am sure some of the reason is they get no protections about members saying what they want to about their companies. But when I read that comment I just thought the guy was an idiot. Not a big deal.

I have bought a few in the $500-$600 range but try my best to stay under $100 per card. I would much rather have 15 beaters that I paid $50-$100 each for than 1 card in much better condition that costs $1000.

For me the highest I`ve ever gone in 12+ years of collecting is 1500.00 dollars. Have promised myself, and so far so good, if ever to go higher will sell items to raise needed funds. Now if a Green Cobb, or an E 90-1 Cy Young suddenly appeared well...........................................

The most I have spent is somewhere a little shy of $700.

There are several cards I will need that are in the $10-20K range to complete sets, but at this point I can't stomach the opportunity cost. Everytime I consider it I remember that the same amount of money would build the poolhouse, finish off the upper garage, wallpaper the livingroom, etc.

The most I ever spent on a single card was a little over $1,000 for the card in my avatar. As I have written on here before, I like collecting auto racing cards because there are only a handful of cards that sell for over $500 individually. "Lorenzen with car" is a legendary rarity and probably the most valuable racing card in the hobby. My personal limit had always been $1,000, but I put in a snipe that slightly exceeded that when the card showed up on eBay.

There are 4-5 non-racing cards on my want list that I would go $1,200-1,500 for if they ever showed up at auction, however.

I don't know what you charge, but it seems dumb to me for any major auction house not to advertise here and let people know when their auctions are running. I am always looking to buy or sell to improve my collection, but there are times auctions slip my notice. My avatar says i am in the last group and there are quite a few of us here willing to spend a lot on cards.

The responses are not what I expected. I assumed more collectors on this forum bought higher priced cards.

My most so far is $3,050.00.

The card I would pay the most for has never graded a 10 but if one ever hit it would blow away my most expensive purchase.

In the poll results, 10% have spent $50,000 or more on a card, and 25% have spent 10K. That's some pretty serious numbers.

Many of the highest spenders have little interest in others knowing how much they spent.

I've never been anywhere near those numbers, but my most important criteria is whether I believe I could recoup the money if I need to sell the item. I try to buy items that I believe will maintain their value over time.

Only a few hundred bucks, I'm a minnow. I'd consider spending more purely as an investment like buying ETF's or stocks. What I buy I see in a different way, they're more or less cards I could have had as a kid. I find myself beginning to find some of the pre war cards interesting but I really don't need to start down that road. I think if I was to spend high dollar amounts, I'd probably shift to vintage memorabilia...but damn those Cracker Jack cards sure look nice.
