Ok, so I need a card fix and would like to see everyone's top 5 pieces. It doesn't need to be cards. It can be photos, pics, memorabilia, whatever you are most satisfied and happy to have. I also shamelessly admit that I want to see my 5 favorite cards together. I'm a Cuban card guy, so here are mine:

I was never much of a Picasso fan. I have several Monet prints and like Matisse as well, although not as much as Monet. I run hot and cold on most of the impressionistic painters, but I have always liked Monet.

This is an interesting thread. It was tough to narrow it down to five. This exercise made me realize that my favorites change over time as I've recently told people that my Edd Rousch signed 1915 Cracker Jack and my Tris Speaker signed 33 Goudey were my favorite cards, but those didn't make the list.

Wow, Paul what`s the story behind that game worn mask ? Early Stanley Cup winnings seasons or what, incredible sir !

Cheevers was the goalie for the great Orr-Esposito Cup winning teams in the 1970s, his mask was famous for showing where he would have had stitches if he didn't wear a mask (like the goalies did until just a little before his time). One of the early masks that had an image on it rather than just white with cutouts for eyes and mouth.

Picking a top 5 is a very difficult undertaking, so I cheated and limited my selections to pre-war individual cards/cabinets (e.g., no team photos/postcards, press photos, etc.). And even then, this was a difficult task!

Ok, so I need a card fix and would like to see everyone's top 5 pieces. It doesn't need to be cards. It can be photos, pics, memorabilia, whatever you are most satisfied and happy to have.
No way can I narrow things down to a "top five". It would be more like a top one-hundred. And it wouldn't just be cards and it wouldn't be just baseball. I collect across an eclectic spectrum - hockey, Hawaiiana, 1930s chorus girls, you name it. Anyway, here are six items off the top of my head that put a smile on my face and are part of my top one-hundred.

Hawaiian Decoration by John Kelly (aquatint). Kelly's work evoked the romantic vision of Hawaii better than anyone else and really rocks my soul.

Tough to narrow down to only five but I will try;

1. Barnum and Baily circus elephants playing baseball, this a tougher variation of the similar but smaller version that has both P.T. Barnum and Bailey in the upper left hand corner

2. I have all three Tuxedo's but if I had to pick one, I like the Walter Johnson the best

3. Spalding catchers trophy

4. Peach advertising

5. 1894 Pittsburgh Pirates schedule

Thanks, i do have the bound copper plate set (minus 5, including the Anson, i had to fill in, but accomplished!). i think that is the most amazing set, the pictures are awesome and they have the full description and information on the back. i consider them the first cards and they are perhaps the earliest ones with any player info? so many rookies in there.

i have the M-101 sporting news supplement set too. some different player selection (as an aside, I managed to get a few Delehantys at very reasonable prices while completing, for some reason he is listed in the guide, and was priced at auction, as a common ..but it's Ed Delehanty).

Steve Verkman broke up a Copper Plate set recently and still has a bunch for sale (minus some of the keys but still many HOF's left). was able to finish the set from his sale.

i love that Walter Johnson Tuxedo above! amazing.

Also glad to see some Hockey thrown in as well.

Here's mine, although they pale in comparison.

Based on today's feelings. It may change tomorrow.

The red felt is of unknown issue (only about 15 players known, fewer than 20 examples total), and the Doyle National Copper Plate is ex- Buck Barker.

Amazing stuff in this thread. I love this kind of thread. Kenny, thanks for starting it.

It's impossible for me to pick 5 of my top/favorite items to show, or even 5 of my top/favorite cards to show, or even 5 of my top/favorite WaJo cards to show - I guess I'm too indecisive!

This may come across as strange, but among the cards in this thread that I most enjoyed seeing are the 2 rare strip cards with ads on the backs for "CAFE DU MONDE" and for ROBINSON CRUSO Salted Peanuts that Glenn showed in post #20. This is because I am very partial to scarce/rare cards with neat advertising from non-mainstream sets. Hence, I have picked these 5 such cards from my WaJo collection to show.

- 1889 Beaneaters team cabinet
- 1914 oversized team photo
- 1914 World Series press pin
- 1917 complete season ticket book
- 1922 old-timers game panoramic (amazing to me that there was an old-timer's game in 1922!)

You ever take your glove and spikes to the ball field looking for a pickup game and when you arrive, there's already some older guys taking BP or infield? And after watching them hit numerous BP homers and turn silky-smooth double plays, you just decide to sit this one out and watch the big boys play. Not even letting them know you've got a glove too.

That's this ball player. Right now.

Some very nice cards and memorabilia, guys. Thanks for sharing.

A picture of Mickey Mantle on his first pro team, the semi-pro Whiz Kids, from 1947 when he was 16 years old. Mantle and a few of the other players have signed the picture (the other sigs are barely legible). The condition is a bit rough because it is an original copy that belonged to one of the kids in the picture, Guy Crow, who was the bat boy (left end of the right bench).

I've been sidelined with work for a bit so I'm late to this party but just couldn't help but bump this image. As a fan of 19th century baseball and cabinets, particularly colored mounts with a little flare, this historic baseball arrangement is off the charts cool. Jay, as far as you know, is this a unique piece? Not that I'd collect anything non-Detroit

I'm a big fan of Player's League material. Here are five pieces I really like.

Every time I see Matty's 52 mantle I think of the one in the Louisville Slugger Museum I think it's the same grade and displayed similarly. Sick card. The other 4 aren't too shabby either.

Note: Ben and I posted simultaneously. What a coincidence we had the same thought.

Note #2: I just saw the REG number is the same. Wtf? it's the same card??? How the hell did the museum get matty's mantle? Or how did Matty get the mantle from the museum????

Thanks, Jay. I've got to admit, I am pretty thrilled with that pick-up. Scored it on eBay for less than $20 a couple weeks ago. The paper arrived in a plastic bag in a thick cardboard envelope. I haven't taken it out of the bag yet because I can just tell that the paper is so brittle (that scan is from the eBay listing, truth be told). I will do it eventually, I just haven't worked up the nerve yet ;)

Very interesting, thanks Denny! A quick Google search just revealed this image of another E90-1 Young (sold in REA in 2008) which has the same printing lines. This may be one of the other examples that you referenced... Has anyone seen similar on an E90-1 card other than Cy Young?

There is one CDV in there! Yes, my Walter Johnson RPPC is the one with the 1907 postmark. Note that front of the postcard does not say "Weiser Wonder" on it. I do not think that he was known by that nickname until he played for the Senators.

Kevin..wow. That's certainly a mic drop post. I'm embarrassed to follow that. I lack focus so my collection has many different tentacles. Nonetheless my favorite items relate to my childhood obsession with the 1971 Pirates. These are not my most valuable items but they certainly make me smile which is why we all chase the items in our collections.

I have owned this signed Roberto Clemente Night Poster for more than thirty years. When I bought it I was earning around $8.00 an hour. My new bride didn’t blink when I dropped more than a week’s salary on it. It was then I knew she was a keeper. The Roberto Clemente Memorial Pennant was a recent pick up. I find it to be a poignant reminder of that day and the emotions I experienced when I learned of his death. In the top of the 8th inning of Game 7 Jose Pagan's double into the gap off of Mike Cuellar drove in Stargell with what proved to be the winning run. I could never prove this was the bat he used but it is fun to consider that possibility. The team issued 1971 World Champion jewelry reminds me that I don’t own a ring:rolleyes:. Willie Stargell and Roberto Clemente were my technicolor version of my Father’s Mantle and Maris. Whenever I hear Santana’s Soul Sacrifice I think of them. Because of that these coin banks are always displayed together. Finally the 1971 National League Pennant which hung at Three Rivers Stadium during the World Series is my favorite item. It is far too large to frame or display in my home. My wife jokingly calls it my burial shroud. At least I think she is joking...

Great, Jay! In your Old Judge book, it says there is one McPhee known in a museum collection. Is yours a recently found copy?

Thanks Craig. On a different day, the Rose of Johnson probably would have made the cut. I decided to go with cards featuring five different subjects and I went with the Weiser RPPC this time.

Just like I told Jay, I would love to see what your top 5 would be. I can only imagine.
