Without getting into the whole debate over PWCC business practices. there were some very strong (I thought) prices on some boxing cards that closed yesterday:

I don't recall seeing prices this solid in quite a while.
Anyone else have any thoughts?

Was this legitimate bidding or something else going on involving the consignors?

Jack Johnson cards certainly seems to be drawing a lot of interest and big money at auctions lately.

Wonder what my E80 with Jefferson Burdick back stamping would sell for...

Consign it to PWCC and find out. :)

No thanks...I don't give up control over my items' pricing and descriptions.
I'll take $4600 for it ;)
i was exceptionally happy to see the strong bid prices. I can tell you that the bids are legit as I was the underbidder on 2 of the 4 cards above. I've always believed quality vintage Boxing was undervalued, and I still do. I've been a very infrequent contributor here, but love the forum. Ed

Yeah, the Kopec price was the biggest surprise. Didn't bid on it but was watching closely. I guess a couple of people were looking to grab it for a type collection. I rarely see one for sale (there was one at LOTG recently, but it was missing a big chunk).

If Hollywood ever makes a movie on Jack Johnson, then these cards will probably triple in value.
By the way, I own his 1909 Ogden's Cigarette card; is that his true rookie?

Heck if I know. PSA lists a couple of PCs from 1908 in the player registry.

I'll make a few comments..
The final price for the Kopec Johnson didn't surprise me at all. Great looking card and only a few known. First complete Kopec Johnson I've seen publicly offered since I've been collecting.
There are a few mainstream issues(where complete sets could or do exist) where there are less than 5 copies known to exist(to my knowledge). Here are the ones I can think of:
1908 T226 Red Sun
1909/10 e79 Red Back
1910 Kopec
1910 T219 Red Cross
1910 e78
T9 Turkey Red no Ad back
Of course there are others where only 1-2 are known like the e125 or New England Confectionery flip card but I don't consider those mainstream(personnel choice).
In the end, its a great card and congrats to the winner.
Congrats to the T9 no Ad back winner also as I know of only 3 of those to exist. ;-)

I really wanted the Kopec and was outbid by quite a. It. It was the best looking low grade one that I had seen in awhile. Looking back, I probably should have stretched on it, but just struggled to get there. Brent, if you got it, maybe we can work a trade if it is a dupe for you.
I have been selling a number of dupes on eBay over the past six months and have noticed more action in my boxing dupes than my negro league and soccer cards, so maybe there is a slight turn in the market, which is pretty good news for most of us who are deep in the category
