View Full Version : What If? Buy the Name or Buy the Picture

The T3 Baker-Barry (named-pictured) presents some interesting questions.

Is it a HOF card with only the name of a HOFer?

Are there other HOF cards that do not feature a picture of the HOFer?

If purchased are you buying the name and not the picture, regardless of the holder?

What if there was a card with Barry's name and Baker's image?

Which card would be more valuable?

Would you pay more for the Baker image without his name or for the Baker name without his image?

Is the worthy of a premium simply because it's an error card?

As an uncorrected error card, rarity should not be a factor in valuation.

The T206 and T201 cards of Tris Speaker sure don't look like Speaker to me.

Here's a good example & I'm pretty sure it's not valued the same as if it were a true Anson card.

Want some whiskey in your water

Here's the opposite...a non-HOF card with a HOFer pictured. Not that it answers any of your questions :)

E97 with Irv Young sure sells for prices expected for a guy who won 511 games, not a guy with a career 63-95 mark....

Also E98 and E90-1 (Cleveland).

Personally, I prefer a card with the HOFer's picture. I have all the T3 and E90-1 HOFers, but refuse to buy the T3 "Baker" or the E90-1 Young (Cleveland), since they do not picture Frank Baker and Denton "Cy" Young.

Edited to add:

So, to answer the question, I would pay more for a "Barry" card picturing Baker.

Same with his E92 card

I'm only 10 cards in to the 50 card Crofts Cocoa set, but I'll never complete it because I'll never pay Cy Young prices for an Irv Young card.

This one I am not so sure about. It shows him as a righty and Irv batted and threw left, as is shown on E97.

Major bummer for someone trying to do an Irv Young collection on the cheap...

IMO T206 Johnson pitching looks nothing like him. Not sure if it's another player or just a generic drawing.

Johnson's T206 is obviously a cropped version of this drawing.

Perhaps Kevin, but it looks nothing like him.

I agree. A little easier to isentify him in the T3 image though.

Yes not a great likeness there but at least some resemblance. The eyes are better or something.

It's definitely Irv. The image is simply reversed.

Here's a link to a previous thread on the E90-1 Young (Cleveland).
