I have been reading old threads about the Obaks. There are constant references to informative articles about them. Is there anyway I can access them?

Specifically, I saw volumes 3 and 12 mentioned.

Robert, I haven't browsed my VCBC run in a while, but from what I remember there are several different articles. Is there any specific info you're looking for?

Conor, honestly about anything on the Obaks. I am in research mode right now. I have a board member (thanks Mark) who is sending some info., and I have purchased a couple of old issues on the bay. I would like to read anything Obak related. Thank you.

Old Cardboard has a useful index of their articles plus VCBC (and some other publications). Here is a screencap for "Obak".

Thank you. Very helpful!

What did you click on to arrive at that screen? I can't get there.

I have all those articles and can scan them when I get home, but that won't be until tomorrow (Monday) night. In the meantime, if you want some historical background, the following thread that I posted last year has scans of the two earliest hobby articles about Obaks, from 1957 and 1961:

Very useful to know. Click on the Old Cardboard icon at top right of the N54 screen to bring up the OC main page. Then click on the magnifying glass icon (article index) and Bob's your uncle.

Ok, now I see. I didn't know that trick. When I get home from the in-law's, I will have some reading to do. Looking forward to it.

Thanks, everybody!

I actually bought my first Obak last night....the Hetling (Portland) in SGC 2. Other Obak purchases will probabIy be closer to the vgex range, but i just wanted one to look at for now. I think I am going to focus on the 1910 T212-2s, 175 subjects and whatever 150s I can find. They are so beautiful! Looking through the galleries initially, I noticed that they look like T206 however, upon closer inspection, I was struck by the beauty of the cards. I didn't see many that didn't qualify as little works of art. I haven't felt this kind of passion in my collecting in a while. It is fun for me reading, researching, and learning about the Obaks. It occurs to me that the best part of collecting is this initial part when everything is new and exciting.

So many ways to approach T212s. Some guys collect all the years. There are probably even manly men who have gone for broke and put together master sets. Myself I concentrated on the 1910 and '11 Vancouver and Victoria players because I live in BC. Link (http://imageevent.com/kawika_o_ka_pakipika/sportscardsetc/baseball/vancouverandvictoriaobaks) Also put together a 1909 subset of the ten horizontal cards. A T4 makes for a nice companion piece. Plus I'll pick up the odd one just because I like how it looks. Obaks are great. Have fun!

Those articles are indeed older, but those authors, especially Barker, knew quite a bit of background on the players. I really want to know something about these players. Knowing something about the players just makes collecting sets like this that much more fun. Thanks for sharing.

Conor: It's a great little card show, like going to a ball game with the wood stands and chicken wire backstop. None of that super-amped National extravaganza crap. Unfortunately have a conflict and need to take a miss this summer.
Robert the OP: If you live on or ever get near the west coast there are several PCL-centric card shows in the Bay Area and the WSCCA shows in Seattle. Lots of great cards and any number of walking Obak/Zeenuts encyclopedias. You'd dig it.

I've scanned most of the Obak articles listed on the Old Cardboard site, as shown by Kawika in post 5 of this thread. The exceptions are the two OC eNews articles, which are about the T4 Obak premiums (very tough to find) and are online already; the 2005 Old Cardboard item, which is just a bio of Mark Obermeyer that mentions that he has a complete set of T212s; and the last article by Obermeyer in the March 2001 VCBC, because it turns out I don't have that issue of VCBC. I'll included the first three articles in this comment, and the last three in the next comment below. So, in chronological order:

Here is Lloyd Toerpe's article from the May 1973 Sports Scoop:
http://i246.photobucket.com/albums/gg98/dkathman1/IMG_20170417_0001.jpg
http://i246.photobucket.com/albums/gg98/dkathman1/IMG_20170417_0002.jpg

Lew Lipset's item from the April 1987 The Old Judge, about a T212 album that had been discovered:
http://i246.photobucket.com/albums/gg98/dkathman1/IMG_20170417_0003.jpg
http://i246.photobucket.com/albums/gg98/dkathman1/IMG_20170417_0004.jpg

And Mark Macrae's article from the September 1995 Vintage & Classic Baseball Collector (#4):
http://i246.photobucket.com/albums/gg98/dkathman1/IMG_20170417_0005.jpg

Here is Jeff Obermeyer's article from the September/October VCBC (#12) about the players in T212:
http://i246.photobucket.com/albums/gg98/dkathman1/IMG_20170417_0007.jpg
http://i246.photobucket.com/albums/gg98/dkathman1/IMG_20170417_0008.jpg

http://i246.photobucket.com/albums/gg98/dkathman1/IMG_20170417_0012.jpg
http://i246.photobucket.com/albums/gg98/dkathman1/IMG_20170417_0013.jpg

Obermeyer's article from the February 2000 VCBC (#22) about the back slogans on the 1910 Obaks:
http://i246.photobucket.com/albums/gg98/dkathman1/IMG_20170417_0014.jpg

http://i246.photobucket.com/albums/gg98/dkathman1/IMG_20170417_0016.jpg

And Obermeyer's update on the 1910 backs from the January 2001 VCBC (#24):

One of my first vintage sets I came to love. Thanks David for posting those articles, some great ones which I had seen before (MaCrae and Obermeyer), and others that escaped me (the Toerpe and Lipset). It would be cool if that album mentioned by Lipset would show up. I imagine it is just as beautiful as the cards.

Here are some loose scans I found underneath a pile of bills and some junk mail. Man, I should really throw out that pile of bills.

Throw out the bills and junk mail...buy more Obaks! Great cards btw!

With the exception of a couple of ill begotten T206 attempts and a few T205s, I have always been a postwar collector. However, I have been thinking about Obaks for a few months and reading everything I can about them. Somehow, it is all clicking for me this time. It is really a fascinating allotment of cards. Thanks to all of you who have shared articles, knowledge, and scans. Let's keep this thread going!

Here's one more early Obak article. It's from the December 1, 1944 issue of Card Collector's Bulletin, an item in Jefferson Burdick's "News Notes" reporting the discovery of the "Series of 150" 1910 Obaks. Charles Bray had 22 of the "Series of 150" cards, but we now know that there were 40. I love these articles from back when the hobby pioneers were still figuring out information that modern collectors take for granted.

....dandy Hetling. I am sorry you missed a lady, in Sacramento..on eBay about 15 years ago, that had what I remember to be a cigar box full of 1910 and 1911 Obaks that she sold as singles. Good selection and under appreciated at that time. Cool cards and best of luck going forward !!

Thanks for the kind words, Dennis! He may be Good, but that Hetling is pretty cool to me. I am still new to them and learning them, but I can see how they could quickly become habit-forming. What gorgeous little works of art! Part of my motivation for collecting cards when I first started was the historical aspect of them. I have drifted far from that. For a time, I became so condition sensitive that collecting stopped being fun because I started nitpicking everything. That's not to say collectors shouldn't have standards, but I am saying that collecting cards from 1910 or 1911 certainly forces me to loosen up once again...which I am happy to do. I wish I could find another cigar box full of Obaks for sure!

I'm reviving this thread after two months to post the one Obak article I didn't post the first time, because I didn't have that issue of Vintage & Classic Baseball Collector. Now I do, so here is the article, "Obak Backs Revisited" by Jeff Obermeyer. It's from the March/April 2001 issue of VCBC, and is a sequel to Obermeyer's article on 1910 Obak backs from the February 2000 issue, updated with new data from readers. The heart of the article is a master checklist showing which slogans are known with each of the 175 players in the set, and how many players are known with each slogan.

Pardon the low quality cell phone pics, but I wanted to share my Obak progress. The pics really don't do the cards justice. I am up to a whopping 42, and I can't wait to get more! The back slogans are also fun to play around with.

I am loving the binder and slip case I bought from Archival Methods. The pages are made for mini cards like '51 Bowman, but the cards and tobacco card size top loader and sleeve fit beautifully into them. I have lots of empty top loaders just waiting to be filled. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170714/f010eef76eaaf2b9bf85ce610dd47a52.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170714/69021d2051a7143a82794c035da90d48.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170714/c594c0e3b46280a51abcbe690d63a2c5.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170714/e40b62d8c52422850b8c3bcf390ef948.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170714/0a8df543138afb22c54bebb6fe735f5e.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170714/cb99f99c95f234b6dcce06110691a582.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170714/a2cb8e2a854f2059f229514a2e93879d.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170714/609360731fd98d0bf109acc536b99ac6.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170714/5fddb21cce3bbc0d56f5f32065d11b31.jpg
