I'll start it off this month -- and I'm not making an April Fool's joke here! -- I am absolutely thrilled to be adding a new signed T206 card to my collection, thanks to a trade with another collector who has his own awesome signed T206 collection going. It's nice when collecting competitors can mutually work to fill holes in each other's collections! Thanks Art! (Net54 ID: rebelsart)

Heinie Zimmermann (2x WS Champ) is the 44th unique pose in my signed T206 collection:

Just "picked up" 7-8" inches of heavy wet snow. Wished it was an April Fool's joke here in Maine.

Awesome card! As a signed vintage collector myself, I am quite envious of your collection...keep it up! :)

Technically this one arrived yesterday, but I'll post it here. Was an impulse buy to get use of the 'Spend $50+ get 10% ebay bucks' promo they had going. Dickman (http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/d/dickmem01.shtml) (D. 81) has a great looking sig. (Not much of a career though)

I saw this kind of chucked in the back corner of a showcase. At $35, I thought it was a bargain. Reasonably tough issue and a hall of famer to book albeit a football hall of famer.

I was the owner of that drum hofman from about 1992-2001 or so... I sold it and bought a leather reclining chair that my cat proceeded to destroy with the proceeds! I bought that card at a Silver Spring Armory show in Silver Spring Maryland when I was living with my parents in the year 1992 or so! The card was listed for $37 and while I wanted to haggle because it was so beat up I decided against it!!!

Very interesting. You do realize that the original game pieces were issued and in subsequent years, stickers were issued to put over the bottom part of the piece to reflect the players for that particular year. It is likely that if you removed to paper covering the bottom of one of your pieces, there would be another player printed there.

Some info from OCB:
From 1920's game by National Game Makers of Wash, DC
Game: "Major League Ball--The Indoor BB Game Supreme"
Fourteen die-cut player cards used for each team
All 16 teams represented; roster varied each year
Generic player position poses repeated for each team
Same pose for each position; coloring keyed to team

So I wouldn't try taking the paper off of them as it will most likely be blank underneath.

Definitely would leave it alone. Just found it interesting. Is a way of dating a particular year as my Great great uncle was in the 1921 issue of the game and there was no sticker on his game piece.

Actually there could be printing from the initial 1921 printing or perhaps a "sticker" from a prior year (or blank). Ironically, neither of Kenny's two Zach Wheat's depict the left fielder from the game.

ValKehl
04-02-2017, 02:02 PM
Kenny, here's a pic of my complete sheet of the Washington Senators team. Most likely, it was issued in 1921, as 1921 was the last year that Jose Acosta and Frank O'Rourke played for the Senators, and 1921 was the first year for Goose Goslin and George Mogridge.

Sure! I bid on that Gertenrich until it started to leave my budget (i.e. pretty early). I thought the card looks nicer than the grade, but that can be said for all Joe Judge cards :).

I suppose I've got no shot on the Holland Creameries Joe Judge coming up in REA?

The Gertenrich-Judge card went for more than I was hoping to get it for, but it was my numero uno "had-to-have-it" card in the LOTG auction.

I do have all of the Hollands cards, except the near impossible Peckinpaugh, but the majority are in pathetic condition, including Judge. I have been slowly upgrading my Hollands, as my budget will allow. Whether I go after the Judge example in REA depends what other goodies in REA appeal to me more.

Rob, thanks for the kind words. I suspect you are the only one collecting the Gertenrich set. The reason I wanted to win this card so badly is that it fits both of my top collecting focuses - type cards and cards of all the players on the 1924 Senators championship team.

I agree, the Gertenrich cards are tough to find w/o paper loss on the back - ditto for the Holmes to Homes cards. And, I'm anal about not having paper loss on the backs of my type cards that have neat ads on the backs.

Jon: I am the previous owner of your D304 Cobb. It resided happily in my set for the past eight or nine years. I had a second one, an "Authentic" that presents as pristine, so decided to let Al have a go with the SGC20. Don't remember what I paid for it but I think it did pretty well. You did just fine; I don't think D304 Cobbies will ever diminish in desirability or value. Good luck with the rest of your set. Some beautiful cards to be had. Tenney was the big toughie for me and Young wasn't easy either.

My recent pickups have an 1887 focus. It was the year Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde was first performed on stage. It starred Richard Mansfield, who is featured on the tobacco card, cigar box and creepy framed photograph. This was also the year that Detroit won its first ever baseball championship and the year of the Tobin lithograph of Dan Brouthers. I'd say the Brouthers card is one of the most amusing cards, 19th Century or otherwise, that I've ever seen. Maxjacks: Very nice N162 and T205. I'm a Giants fan from Polo Grounds days. Some of the wags around here will say that I saw Keefe and Raymond play but it's fake truth. I collected the NYG T205s a few years back, a fun little project. [I did not collect them from cigaret packs; bought most of them off eBay]. Have a look if you like: http://imageevent.com/kawika_o_ka_pakipika/sportscardsetc/baseball/t205goldbordersnewyorkgiants

Erick, that is Sweet! Never seen it.

Thanks man! Yea it's quite rare. This is the only SGC slabbed copy and PSA shows 2 total (authentic and grade 1), I've never seen one in a PSA holder so possibly could be same card resubmitted, but no idea.

It really is gorgeous in person. Ross Verlag made lots of high quality real photo postcards of actors and actresses of the day. This comes from the movie "Speedy", released in 1928 and features actor Harry Lloyd.

The same image is used on the much smaller Josetti card, but the clarity on this postcard is amazing!

Received these 2 items in the mail today.

Picked up a nice T207 Paddy Livingston (A on shirt) from PWCC at a great price.

Wanted this card because the "A" is much lighter than the other one I picked up last year. This one has a Recruit Factory 606 Dist MD back, whereas the original one had a nice Napoleon back. Now have 3 different backs with my 4 Paddy Livngston T207s.

Also picked up another RPPC of a catcher in full gear which reminds me of a T209-2 card.

But I sold some stocks because I thought the stock market was overvalued and figured if I had to ride the train down on something, i wanted it to be on something I wanted to buy before I died rather than on some index-linked ETF.

The yellow Ruth is the last expensive card I need in the set my dad got me interested in during the early 1990s.

Special thanks to this board. I would have never seen this auction without someone flagging it.

Congrats! That crease looks much more pronounced in your photo than in the auction scan, but it's a killer card! Very nice indeed! And Andrew, very nice Hornsby. If I had to pick a Hornsby to own, it would be the one you have or his wildly over-priced 1917 E135 Collins McCarthy.

Ha. When I tell my wife, this may be the only thing in bed to lay with. But seriously, I regretted not buying one a few years back, and I just felt like I was always going to make room to buy this card, so the sooner the better, I suppose. I wasn't that turned off by the rip on the back -- I never look at the back, you know? I mean, if I had $100k, I might think differently....but not at the moment.

I know they're just commons but these are the first pre-war/non-Topps cards I've picked up in a long time. Have been preoccupied with postwar set building.

I enjoy adding clean commons as much as big name players from any set and at a lot less money. Same history and many times a lot more interesting. (and you gotta love the nicknames!)

... here's a side-by-side way to distinguish between the American Type 4 (on the right) versus the Canadian Type 5 : the ''creamy" Type 4 has a more pronounced darker overall tone while the Type 5 appears lighter-toned and almost 'washed out' in appearance ; also the top of the capital "D" visible on their uniforms is thinner on the Type 5 and the font size for the "Charles" is more delicate, especially the first two letters.....

...the raw Bates is much better ; I'll have it graded at the next Philly show ; I'll have to hand-carry and babysit the card to make sure the grader is aware of the correct year and type.....The reason for the grade "2" is a short border tear which I missed during my initial pre-submission examination eleven years ago ; Of the eight '37 Type 5's in that submission , only one came back with the correct flip....

Congrats Pete...I thought the 3 bananas were already taken care of!!!!! Is this for you? Or the top banana...whichever that one is!!!

Lol Pete! You're right, I was all set, but am consigning the PSA 4 I have, to leave me still with the 3. This will be for my top banana. Tough to keep them all as they're not too cheap!!

Been holding off to post this one, until it came back today from PSA. My 1st ever sub.

I am a pretty happy camper at the moment...

A speck of paper loss on the back of the t206 and Betz, but otherwise 4 clean cards I am pretty stoked on.

Heck of an April! Congrats.

Steven, don't you already have a CJ Cobb? Save some for the rest of us! Just kidding, great pickup!

Was happy to pick up this one for my Providence set. Pop reports show only a handful graded.

Wow!! Nice pick ups posted here. Would love to add a CJ Cobby someday.

Picked this up at the Tri-Star show today.

At this point, its only upgrades, filling in holes, etc,... in T207. Lowdy completes T207 for me - second go 'round. Average grade just a hair shy of Ex/SGC 60/PSA 5.

While most of these are from April, I have not picked up anything in a long while ... it'll be a long while recovering, too.

Love Lowdermilk ----> His "I can't believe I'm going to be on a Baseball card" expression is priceless :)
