1972 Reds NL Champs ring and brooch. Thanks to Dave Grob for helping identify the original owner of the ring. I presume the brooch was given to his wife.

I was recently able to pick up a beautifully scored program to HOF Bob Feller's last career win # 266. Feller came into this game in relief of CLE starting pitcher Herb Score and pitched the 7th and 8th inning, ultimately getting the win. The starter for the Yankees was WS Perfect Game pitcher Don Larsen. This provided an excellent complimentary piece to pair up with a ticket from the same game that I have owned for a number of years.

The ticket has some sentimental value as well, as I had Mr. Feller sign it in DET the last time my son Sam and I saw him before he passed away.
Rapid Robert signed the back of the ticket with this inscription:
"Bob Feller- Last career win # 266"

On August 27, 1955, as previously noted, it marked the last harrah for HOF Bob Feller. Ironically on the same day, HOF Sandy Koufax recorded his 1st career win.
Literally a passing of the torch for two of the greatest pitchers to ever take the mound...

The photo that I have included is one of my personal favorites. It was taken before his 1st start after he returned from WWII.

I received my H&S winning yesterday, and scanned some of them today, lots of cool scorecards:

1968-06-07 - Ryan's 5th career win
1968-09-17 - Gaylord Perry No Hitter
1969-08-13 - Clemente 3 HR game
1971-10-03 - NLCS Game #2 - Last Mays HR as a Giant
1976-04-17 - Mike Schmidt 4 HR game

And a bunch of unscored programs that I'll be looking to get rid of, one of these days.

Just picked up the Canadian version of this May 10, 1947 Liberty Magazine (on the left) to go with the US version I already had (on the right). Bob Hope was already a part owner of the Cleveland Indians at this point. Never knew there was a Canadian version to be had until I saw this item. Very different content, advertisers, etc. and with the US version being more than twice the page count, a different price point as well.

I recently picked up some terrific tickets and scorebooks to HOF Sandy Koufax's major milestone strikeout games. They really are an ideal fit to my collection related to power pitching.

These all came from the personal collection of long-time Koufax collector and close hobby friend Phil Paul. After 30 years of collecting, Phil has decided to part with some of his favorite items related to Sandy Koufax's career. He is a regular contributor on net54 and goes by koufax1fan. If you don't know Phil, he is truly one of the great guys in the hobby.

Consider reaching out to Phil directly as he still has more excellent items related to the great Sandy Koufax's career.

A few of the items that I would like to share are:

A full, unused ticket to Sandy Koufax's NL leading single-season strikeout record of 382 K's. Only one pitcher ever got more strikeouts in the Modern Era and that was the great Nolan Ryan when he broke Sandy's record in 1973 with 383 K's. I've never seen another full ticket to Sandy's 382 K game, which ironically was also the 2nd to last game of the Milwaukee Braves franchise before becoming the Atlanta Braves in 1966.

A nice ticket stub to Sandy's single game K record of 18 K's on August 31, 1959 at LA, which at the time tied him with fellow HOF pitcher Bob Gibson for the ML record. This was the 1st of two times that Sandy recorded 18 K's in a game.

A beautifully scored program, ticket, official press notes and newspaper clippings from Sandy's 2nd 18 K game on April 24th, 1962 at Wrigley Field. Awesome mini-collection from the lucky fan that witnessed his gem!

Taking a closer look at that program, I just realized that I have other Cubs scorecards scored by the same person.

Am wondering if any of the experts on this forum can shed light on this Hank Aaron postcard.

The seller noted it as a "real photo postcard." I'm interested to know if this is a photo you've seen before or more likely something a photographer took and made into a postcard.

Easily the ugliest piece in my collection, but one of my faves: Lou Brissie's protective leg cover when he pitched in the majors. For those of you who don't know his amazing story, he nearly got his leg blown off in WWII, yet came back to pitch in the majors with his leg MacGyvered back together.

Love the stuff guys!
Mike, that fob is killer! Haven't seen that one before.

Here are a few pickups from the last little while....
The first is just a generic 1910 era cabinet, but I had to have it.
If you notice, his jersey says "Norwood", which is the area in Winnipeg that my mother spent a good part of her youth in during the 1950s. Norwood also borders St Boniface, which my family had lived in since 1880.

The second piece is a baseball trophy awarded to Stuart Sheppard for the highest individual fielding average for 1918 in the WABA.

The next item is hockey related, as anyone who know me is aware I mostly collect antique hockey. It's a cabinet photo from 1907 that shows a player wearing a hockey pin, one that I think originates from a rare series issued in 1904, of which I have a pair. Two other are known (I'm trying to make a deal for one of them) with the other selling at auction years ago. The pins are dated '04 on the reverse, and my question is, is it the same type of pin?? You can even see the end of the protruding pinback in the photo... What do you think? I'd love to hear the opinion of others...

Alameda Point got rained out so they had a roll over show last Sunday...I hit it and like most roll over shows it was weak...but I did find this Tom Hyer vs Yankee Sullivan boxing print. Though the mat looked newer the frame seemed c1930 and I sensed it was real. The fight took place in 1849 but the print was a supplement of the New York Illustrated Times for February 9, 1884...Today I finally got time to take it out of the frame to find out if it was original...Yes it is original...but trimmed...so hurts value...It's actually an important work in that the fight was considered the first American Championship Fight...and took place in Maryland...Plus it's got other cool aspects in that some of the faces in the crowd are numbered and there is are legends flanking the title giving the names...The layout of the title and other text underneath are classic and it's a great example of an early American sporting print...which were pretty much all inspired by the English sporting prints. My favorite things about this print that had me was that it's American...and the advertising text inside the art work that states "Presented by the New York Illustrated Times the leading and best Sporting Journal in America 15 Murray Street New York"...So it falls within the advertising genera...

The whole print thing is so full of nuances that unless you're a print specialist and know what you're doing you can easily get burned...which I'm not but I took a chance and came out ok...I'll keep it till I get one that's not trimmed...

Feeling like I was missing out on the Sacramento fair I finished up Alameda and peeled out for the hour and forty five miles to Sacramento...stopping on the way for a quick run thru the Concord flea...and some street food a torta Cubana and corn bowl...

...Got to the Sac flea around 1:00PM which is ridiculous...nevertheless I made another little find...a c1950's Lucky Lager advertising sign with golfers...missing the easel on the back so I know it wasn't a trolley car sign...So not a bad day...

Very happy to add this large Photo of the AL Champ Cleveland Indians, from the Oct 14 1920 NY Times Pictorial Magazine. The magazine is approximately 11x16, and the Tribe photo takes up a whole page. Unassuming issue with actress Ina Claire on the cover, but the insides have some great Chicago Blacksox and Cleveland Indians WS content.

This makes 2 pickups related to the 1920 WS in the last two weeks, my best streak by far! The other pickup can be found here:

The magazine is intact, but the pages are loose, so I was able to open to this photo and fold the remaining pages back behind it without further damage.

That's just a shadow in the bottom of the photo.

Nothing I love better than looking through the pick-ups thread and seeing all these pictures of kittens before the month's even through

The whole concept of a player autographing a ticket to a special game is just so cool to me. The idea of collecting the ticket itself is neat enough, but then to add the player's autograph...something about it I just love.

The one, the only, the odd... Babe Ruth "the bird is the word" 1921 type 1 photo used for his 1922, American Caramel e121 card.

Ruth was releasing carrier pigeons to relay the score of the Cleveland/New York series from September 26, alongside Charles Fabrizo, the owner of the pigeons.

Sooo... Babe's..."the bird bird bird.. the bird is the word" rings true on this one.

Have you been to The National Baseball Park Museum in Denver?
I had a chance to visit it last week when I was in Denver on business.
Unbelievably cool museum. I thought of you when I walked through it.

Dave-any truth to dating these based on the number on the jacket? Thanks for any info you might have.

Well, March has really been a fertile month for pickups.
I just completed the purchase of another hobby friends' 30 year collection.
Lots of cool stuff that I am still sorting through right now.
Here are two cool Koufax and Bob Gibson items that also came by way of my friend Phil Paul:

The first piece is a circa 1962 signature of Sandy Koufax on stationary from the Hotel Roosevelt in NYC.
It's quite possible that this was signed by Sandy upon his 1st return to NYC after the westward migration of the Dodgers from Brooklyn in 1958 to play the new expansion NY Mets franchise in '62. The Dodgers did stay at the Hotel Roosevelt when playing the Mets. 'Tis a dandy signature, for sure...

The second piece is a beautifully scored scorebook to Bob Gibson's 20th win in his spectacular 1968 season (1.12 ERA!!) This game also allowed Gibson to pass Sandy Koufax on the single season shutout list.
In this game Gibson got his 13th SHUTOUT in the '68 season, passing Sandy's record of 12 shutouts.
Ironically, Sandy Koufax worked this game as a broadcaster for NBC and beautifully signed the front of this scorebook.

Finally, from my collection purchase, I was able to find a second ticket stub to the exceedingly tough Harvey Haddix game in which he pitched 12 innings of perfect ball against the hometown Milwaukee Braves before ultimately losing the contest. Many would consider this to be the greatest pitching performance ever...
Very few of these ticket stubs are out there in the hobby. Perhaps less than 6 of these are known to exist...

Enjoy!

Dave-any truth to dating these based on the number on the jacket? Thanks for any info you might have.

I have no first hand knowledge for the Braves, but I do know for other clubs, the # on the badge, cap or jacket referred to an assigned employee number. That being said, a lower number would indicate someone hired before a someone who would be given a higher number.

I'm not sure you could date the jackets by the number on the logo alone, but I would love to hear how this theory (you can date the jacket by the number) is explained in an objective manner.

Bruce who owns and operates it is a class act. I've bought and sold many stadium items to him and the museum over the years.

He's definitely extremely passionate about the game!

I had a chance to speak to Bruce for about 20 minutes.
Busy day at the museum as he was permanently installing a vintage Shibe Park turnstile. I agree that he is a great guy.

It's hard to "compete" with Dave, Scott and/or the Brett collector, but here's something I found and was thrilled to get for CHEAP!

This is a work shirt, freshly laundered 58 years ago and wrapped with a Giants 1959 home schedule, produced by Magic Seal of Denver, CO.

Now that's cool! How is it after 58 years that the shirt was never unwrapped.

Probably not as unusual as you might think. I just ran across a bunch of Boy Scout shirts wrapped the same exact way from at least the 1940-50s era...of course the wrap didn't include a cool baseball schedule on it. I think there are a lot of homes out there filled with stuff like this. Unfortunately a lot of it gets thrown away.

I suspect it won’t be too long before this artifact requires a bit of explanation. For the fan that carries their ticket on a smart phone or a printed out receipt that is simply scanned, it may be hard to fathom that one time, people actually had individual printed tickets. Not only this, but post game activities may have involved a hand count and reconciling of these torn stubs with the number recorded on the turnstile counter.

Actually the patch makes it post-1956. The numeric font style and lack of a name on the back make it 1958-1962. This is also likely road jersey.

Love the graphics and timing of the piece; 1934-1937. Dr. Spies could have given Ruth his last physical for the Yankees and DiMaggio's first.
