Here is my dilemma. Right now I have some Paypal to get a nice T206 card. I would like some advice on what is the best options because of price jumps.

Ty Cobb- Green/Red Portrait- I have a Polar Bear PSA 1 Bat off Shoulder
Christy Mathewson-Any
Walter Johnson-Portrait
Cy Young-Any
Nap Lajoie-Any
Tris Speaker-Any

Or Babe Ruth Goudey in the PSA 1/1.5 Range

I can have the Paypal for any in the 2K range by next month on the 15th payday. What would your guys best advice be so I can get the best bang for my buck while I have the funds?

Thanks in advance,
Adam

Personally, I wouldn't be happy looking at a low grade Green Cobb with creases for $2,000. I doubt if you can get a presentable Ruth for that price either.

Hopefully the price on Cobb cards may drop, or at least level off from recent pricing. I sold my 2.5 graded Green Portrait last year for $1,800 and I still regret it.

At this time, I would look at the other players on your list and put my money into the nicest looking example that I could find. Maybe even buy a couple of nice cards for the price. Can't go wrong with a nice Matty, and I love the Speaker rookie.

Best of luck,

Joe

If this is going to be a center piece card in your collection I'd go for the Goudey Ruth 144, one of my favorite images in the hobby. If you can go a little over 2k this one is up on ebay for 2,895.

If that's too much, I'm sure you can find a decent looking PSA 2 for 2k or so.

You could also probably find a decent red t206 Cobb for 2k.

That is some solid adivice Joe thanks very much. I do love that Ruth card in the auction. It's just a bad time for that to show up now. I will have to do another tour in Afghan to get the funds for that, which is no problem. I should buy a house there by now lol.

Poker- I might have to go with the Red for now, but maybe get the Green when I get back from Turkey this summer. I just hope they don't kill me in price by then.

Can't go wrong with a Walter Johnson t206 portrait. One of the nicest looking cards, bar none. IMO.

Not trying to tell you what to do but if ur waiting for specific paychecks to buy a baseball card I might re-think things a bit, just my thought. If you were to buy something I think the Johnson portrait in as high a psa level as you can find is the card to buy.

Have to agree with the last two posters. Not a 206 collector but certain cards seem to epitomize entire sets. A few being, in my opinion, 1948 Leaf Jackie R./56 Topps Mantle/Any 33 Goudey Ruth and the mentioned T 206 Johnson portrait. Something about that gold back ground that really makes that pop. Good luck with your search and thanx for the service.

Can I add another option? E90-1 Honus Wagner (Batting) pose. You could get a PSA 2 for that price and is MUCH scarcer than any other card you mentioned. If you must go off your list then I would go with Ruth. Face it, Joe Public doesn't really care about baseball history....but EVERYONE knows Babe Ruth. It transcends the hobby and is a quality value piece.
