The Delong's are a great looking set of cards and recently when I had a chance to acquire a raw grouping of about 60% of the set (individually), I went for it. It's another set that really isn't that expensive, relatively speaking, to collect. This group was around $850....I will probably go for the rest when I have a chance....Love the raw cards....(backs are all nice except one which has a tiny bit of paper loss)

Great looking set, I agree. You also got a great deal! Several of the stars look like they'd grade VG or better.

My only DeLong is a PSA 2 Gehringer that I picked up for my type collection last year.

I completed a set a few years ago which also included a signed card. I think it ran between $4000-5000 which isn't really that bad. Sold it in REA about 4-5 years ago.

That's a great lot for a really good price! My only Delong is Warneke, bought raw many years ago, and mine doesn't look nearly as good as yours.

Really nice looking lot, Leon!!!!

Thanks. We see a lot of discussions about what to collect and seeing all of these cards displayed like this is (hopefully) a very nice enticement.....and it's not an expensive set!! As with all of vintage, patience is key.

Set has really grown on me. I used to somewhat dislike them. Nice pickups!

I agree Leon, great set. I'm not much of a set collector anymore (currently only have about 5), but this is my first pre-war set. I've been taking it slow so it's taken a couple years to put together. I'm down to needing just the Gehrig.

And here's Harold DeLong's stock certificate book which is kind of neat.

Leon- do the corners look okay to you?

They appear almost uniformly rounded.

My Grove has straight corners

These came from an ebayer that isn't a specific card type seller. I think these probably came from an original collection and the corners are rounded as they should be, not as they shouldn't be :). I have looked at them quite closely.

Hopefully it's cool if this transitions to a "show your DeLongs" thread. I love the look of this set, though I only have a few cards to show for it.

So...my card with the straight borders is in question? I did not quite follow your logic there...could you elaborate?

Thanks,
Raymond

Your cards have less wear than mine. That is all. No reason for concern with any shown, that I can see.

I'm guessing most people either like them or they don't. I imagine the cartoonish look is what turns people off. I have always liked the set ever since I saw the old Dover reprints. I have gathered a few over the years. O'Doul is my favorite because it is a Dodger appearance, but always liked the Pepper Martin slide pose for looks the best.

Klein added...from our BST, thanks Brian V.!!

Seems there was a great looking Gehrig that sold there recently too, in an SGC 30 holder..oh well, missed that one..the hunt continues

I've always liked this set, although I wouldn't want to be a member of the battery on the Cochrane card

I bought a raw, crease-free, Foxx from the BST about a week ago. It checked several boxes for me: my first DeLong, my first Foxx vintage card showing him in an A's uniform. I love it!

I just like Jimmy Foxx, period. I love that card, Rich. I've owned, and cherished, my TCMA reprint ever since I bought the set out of a Sporting News ad placed by Mike Aronstein in the spring of 1972.

I will always remember reading the tales told by Yankee southpaw Lefty Gomez of the monster home runs Foxx hit off Lefty. My favorite yarn was from the day we landed on the moon. The camera on the space module was zooming in on the moon surface, trying to look for anything recognizable (I.E. probably any evidence of Aliens!) Something round was spotted and the news commentator was trying to describe it. Lefty quipped to his dear wife, June, "Honey, that's that home run ball Jimmy Foxx launched off me!" I always thought that was a scream!!

I've had this one for a while. I purchased it primarily because IMO it's the best looking Foxx card:

Maybe someone has posted this elsewhere, but I haven't seen it. A large percentage of the Foxx cards have the spelling as "Jimmy", while the minority have it as "Jimmie". Was it common for both spellings for him, or did card manufacturers just not care?

I also really like the Delong Foxx as one of his best. My 1933 Goudey is tied I feel for his best card. I need the Delong to pair with the Goudey.
