View Full Version : My Collection of 25

I have been a faithful follower of this forum for about 10 years.
I visit the site every day and love the diversion from my daily routine.
Well, I guess it is part of my daily routine, though I rarely contribute.
I recall a discussion about narrowing a collection to a certain number of items. Basically a consolidation, to achieve quality over quantity (in some cases, I suppose.)
Well, here is my latest collection of 25. I got bored and reconfigured my Penzoni display. Of course there are some fringe pieces, but these are the ones I currently treasure. Please share your thoughts on this type of focus. If you've tried it or not, etc.
Bottom line, to each his own. Enjoy what you collect, that's the idea!
Happy New Year and thank you for all the insight, info, camaraderie and enjoyment you all have bestowed upon me!
Tyler

Nice! What I first noticed was the great centering of most of your cards. That's what I strive for.
I too am trying to consolidate my collection, realizing it can't be done overnight.

GREAT collection - I don't think that I could do a Top 25!

Also, I do NOT think that the T205 Addie Joss is a fitting card - you should change him with something more worthy...

(...and he just happens to be one of the few that I still need for MY set - just saying...)

Tyler - I wish I had the self-control to get down to that number.

Perhaps someday...but no time soon

Wonderful collection and display.

Not to hijack this thread, but has there ever been a Mount Rushmore of Baseball Cards thread discussion?

Beautiful display.

But 25? From each year, right?

Tyler, you have a very nice display. Nice variety, which is enchanting. We share the same affinity for Lefty Grove, Hack Wilson, and one Adrian Considine Joss.

I well remember being just so mad at the BBHOF for not enshrining Addie. Back in the mid-70s while I was away at college, I started to do a research project and copy down all his box scores. I remember Addie winning four in a row---all against future BBHOFers! I never finished the project, but after the Veterans Committee finally got some sense of the greatness of Mr. Joss, they selected him.

Honestly, it will be hard to stick to 25 subjects. Still, keeping it pre-WWII and the sheer cost of the "me too-s" does indeed put a lasso on your spending.

Personally, I have always favored the All-State Display Cases. After I noticed that the prime dealers displayed their prime cards in them, I just got to thinking how nice my collection would look in one of the them. So, back in '89, I bought one.

My collection is too big for one case, so some years back I got a nice big black five-drawer blueprint case. Eventually, I drilled the large flap out of each drawer that prevents the prints from curling. Purchasing some Crescent matte board, yards of good quality cotton batting, I started making pads for each drawer. Hobby Lobby and Wal-Mart had the black, midnight blue, and dark purple crushed velvet I needed for the pad covers. Finally, I bought Elmer's spray glue and waited for a good spring day without rain nor too much humidity.

The result gave me a nice big black display case with the equivalent of 5 All-State glass cases. Plus, and this is a very important and crucial plus in our world, the drawers allow me to view the cards, coins, etc. at my leisure. Afterwards, drawers are shut---from all potentially damaging ultra violet ray sunlight.

Take care, Tyler, thanks for sharing. Keep enjoying that beautiful array of fascinating baseball cards!:D

But 25? From each year, right?

Now, this is something I could realistically achieve, MAYBE! :D

I am right now on my path to 25. Getting old and the wife and kids don't want any of it. I hate to do it but the time has come.

Tyler, nice 25!! There are some other collectors doing the same thing as you. When they add a card they subtract one too. I think it helps keep things a bit less stressful, financially speaking. I haven't had that kind of discipline.....

I STILL have trouble letting go of DUPLICATES of cards that I like sometimes... To get down to a Top 25 - it's not in the cards for me...

This takes some major discipline IMO. I subscribe to the idea of getting & keeping as many cards as I can currently, but this may change for me one day. Anyway Tyler, nice job on having some good focus & taste in vintage cards!
