View Full Version : January pick ups.
I won this card last night. I bid on it a while ago and almost forgot about it:o
Received the e-mail notification stating I had won it so it's my first official P/U of 2017. :)

Well, technically, this is just beyond the board cutoff date of 1980, but I don't care. This is a vintage card, not a shiny card, so it belongs here. :D
Nothing really fancy, the card only cost about $11 + shipping. But it's the first card I've bought in some time, so it feels good to have something new to look at.

Latest addition to my Topps Robin Yount PSA master set. Really nice card with exceptional centering.
I'm hoping to make it back to work by the summer. If so, then I'll be able to really start playing with my collection again. I had to choose one "hobby", and my movie collection took precedence, as I'm going to write about film. 18 months later, and nearly 900 blu-rays into my collection, I'm ready to get back to work on the '75 Topps set, the '53 Bowman and T206 set. ;)

I overpaid for this one, but it was less than lower graded copies currently up for sale...and it completes my 'pseudo' Koufax master set (no bazookas yet)
NOTE: The real deciding factor in purchasing this card when I did was directly related to EBay's lowering of the base Ebucks reward from 2% to 1%.
I used all of my fourth quarter Ebucks to help pay for this one. I'll never be able to get that kind of boost at 1%
Also leaves only 11 cards, all vintage, on my official shopping list.

A great start the new year with some great pickups already.
Irv, way to start it off with a 52 Topps pickup. The set of sets to collect for sure. Congrats on adding Overmire to your collection.
Jerry, absolutely love the Spahn. I picked up a PSA 4 not long after I got back into collecting about 3 1/2 years ago. Classic pose of Spahn!!
Mike, Nuff said on the 52 Mantle!! Very Nice indeed.
Raymond, congrats on landing the Koufax. Great looking card congrats again on knocking that one off the list.

The Hardy card cracks me up, with the badly airbrushed B on the cap, while he's clearly wearing a different jersey, which I believe to be the Senators'.

Both Wertz and Malzone are underrated. Back when hitting 20 HRs meant something, Wertz did it 6 times, with career highs of 32 HRs (1956) and 133 RBI (1949). He was a 4-time All Star. Malzone spent 11 of his 12 years with the Sox and was known for being a great defensive 3B with decent pop. He was a 6-time All Star. I had the pleasure of meeting him with my oldest son a few months before he passed away.

Schilling and Yaz were teammates in the minors with Minneapolis and both made their MLB debuts in 1961. They were always linked together, hence the "Sox Sockers" card with the 2 of them in the 1964 Topps sets.

Wow, great Mantles and the Koufax bunch is sweet too. Welcome to the board Ross. Great way to make an entrance!
Here's my take so far this month. The 1970s were the last two cards I needed to finish the set. I got antsy with the checklist as it was THE last card ... upon arrival it turned out to be more ex-mt than nm-mt so I will eventually upgrade. But at least I can finally call it complete!

I was in a card shop last week, when George Foster came in. He was in great shape (looked like he could still play, although he's probably 66 or so now). We talked with him about his greatest memories (e.g. He was the reason Sparky had Rose move to 3rd base - to get his bat in the lineup). I had forgotten about his MVP season in 1977 (52 HRs and 149 RBI's - WOW).
Scurrying to find a card of Foster to sign, I located a 1977 (his MVP season) card and had him sign it.
I realize this isn't a super vintage card or anything, but it was a great experience.

I bought a sealed set of the 1977 Red Sox team issue. These photos measure 7" x 8.5". They used the same exact photos in 1976 & 77, with the only difference being that Petrocelli was included in 76 and George Scott in 77. This set included Boomer, so the Yaz is a 77.

I bought a sealed set of the 1977 Red Sox team issue. These photos measure 7" x 8.5". They used the same exact photos in 1976 & 77, with the only difference being that Petrocelli was included in 76 and George Scott in 77. This set included Boomer, so the Yaz is a 77.
http://i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa463/dbesse27/YAZ/77%20team%20issue%20Yaz.jpg
Bought it for the Yaz, but it included other great players. Here are the other HOFers and my personal favorite, Dewey:

Nice! Any interest in moving the Fisk to a new home?

Thank you, Dustin. Curt is correct - it's the 1978 Hostess.
Been looking for one for quite some time. Would've preferred a PSA 7, but this raw card was pretty decent. Not exactly evenly cut, but at the price I paid for it, at least I now have one!
...great cards everyone!

I love when I find a piece I didn't know about. I didn't realize the OPC version of Agee's Topps poster listed him with Mets, unlike the Topps which had him on the White Sox, just picked this up.
Gehrig P/U is new but the 52's were acquired back in December. (Beckett slabs with inner bags, hence the blur. Think I may try to crack these? Thoughts?)
Thanks, Frank! :)

After a brief lost-in-the-mail scare, this beauty finally arrived today. It won't break anything in the BVG record books, but is a solid mid-grade card with no creases, and (most importantly to me) wonderful bright color still. This card is on my top 10 list of all-time favorites, and though I've had several other copies over the years, they've all slipped away for one reason or another. Not this time. I did overpay a tad in my estimation, but this seems to be a card that's been on the uptick even in lower grade recently. I mentioned somewhere else in another thread - seems to me like Jackie's stuff has taken off a bit in comparison to 15-20 years ago. I think the higher-end stuff really escalating has started to have an effect on mid-grade as well.
Bonus! - the stray mark on the card visible in the yellow background immediately to the left of the "J" in Jackie's signature turned out to be a tiny fleck of what I think was wood - that was embedded behind the BVG holder plastic, and was inside the sleeve itself, but not attached to the card. After quickly making the decision to liberate the card - it disappeared. :-) I really wonder about QC with professional grading companies sometimes...

Just made a trade with a fellow member for these 2 awesome Ted Williams cards.
I also have a '56 Williams that's an SGC 40. Nice card. The older and larger cards ('52 - '56) seem to hold wear a bit better than their later counterparts. Often cards that are "only" VG present quite well and have a ton of eye appeal.

I got the Koufax a few years ago and I've checked eBay ever since. The Clemente was an auction that got no bids and ended at $25 which made it that much better. Long story short I will keep looking to tie these ones together. Also I've never been into the miscuts either but it's a good combo. Thanks

If your cards are like a lot of mine, the browned edges/borders don't look so brown in hand. The scans, at least in my case, really emphasis that.
Picked these up recently for my 52 Topps set. I am managing to find deals occasionally, especially where shipping is concerned.
