The following were not slabbed and graded due to "Questionable Authenticity".

I got them in a Hugiins & Scott Auction in August.

What do you think? Do they look good?

Eppa Rixey

Connie Mack

I also had several others fail in the submission.

Joe Cronin
Zack Wheat
Earle Combs
and a Bowman On-card Certified Albert Pujols

Needless to say I was very disappointed. I would love to hear opinions.

So I really went back to work looking harder at the 3 big autos that failed...Mack, Rixey, and Cuyler.

I am now convicted that the Mack is almost certainly fake. The Cuyler is questionable for sure and I can see why they would have rejected it. The Rixey still looks pretty legit to me.

It was amazing how many flaws I found in the Mack and the Cuyler autos once I looked harder.

You should contact Huggins and Scott regarding the matter.

I already tried and they said that Jimmy Spence looked at every autograph in the lot and called them "good". I have an auction LOA from JSA. H&S said that "is not their responsibility if another authenticator doesn't agree with Jimmy."

I am sure the Rixey is good.

Cuyler would not surprise me either way, his autograph was all over the place depending on the era he signed it and possibly is one of the most inconsistent of all the HOF players from his era.

Mack is clearly secretarial.

Moyni,
Sorry to hear this happened to you.
Here is my 2c.

1) Obviously one of the big 2 made a mistake. Either PSA or JSA is wrong. For me, I think JSA got the Mack incorrect. I think I could go either way on the Cuyler as I have not studied him extensively. The Rixey I have no opinion on as I have not studied him as all.

2) Regarding the Pujols...There have been multiple stories in the not too distant past about players have gotten a stack of cards to sign and have had friends and family do it for them. Don't know if that happened here or if PSA just made a mistake.

3) If this is H&S's position, I certainly would be very hesitant to purchase any autos from them in the future. If it were me, I would realize that everyone makes mistakes and at a minimum offer to have JSA relook at them and take them back if they change their mind. I would think it would be in both of their best interests to focus on getting it right. Just your posting this here, I am sure has made several board members become hesitant to buy autos from them.

4) Lastly, I think you bear a significant amount of responsibility for this situation. Now that you look closely at the Mack you stated that you see many inconsistencies. You also note questionable findings in the Cuyler. Why did you not look closer before you spent your hard earned money? The reason is that you trusted the TPAs to do the work for you. Unfortunately, they only supply opinions and now their opinion is questionable. Yours is common situation since the beginnings of TPAs. If you had done your own analysis before bidding, you would have avoided the lot and not been out the money.

I think the moral of the story for all of us is to make sure we do our own homework.

I hope H&S does help you out in this situation and it get resolves for everyone's benefit. The selling of bad autos helps no one and hurts the hobby as a whole.
Best,
Mark V

I always like my stories to have good morale...

I've had Spence tell me a Spence Auction LOA (albeit while he was at PSA/DNA) was not good. See if Spence will upgrade his Auction LOA to a full LOA and, if not, then you can go to H&S again.

How are we determining the Mack as "secretarial"? I've always read Mack rarely if ever used a "ghost" signer. I can accept it being forged but unsure how you come up with secretarial. Mack signatures are everywhere from what I see. Just a question...I just wast further knowledge for myself for the future.

These GDMF auction LOAs are a fraud! I will not bid on an auction with one unless I consider myself sufficiently versed on the signer to have my own view.

As for JSA, I will never, ever use them again for precisely the same reason T26 Collector stated: I had a very expensive signature rejected by JSA over their own auction LOA, and it came from a single-item lot, so there was no 'missing' it.

Auction houses are a different breed of client for the TPA's.
