The 1910 T210 Joe Jackson, graded "Ex (st)" went for just under $204,000 (with buyer's premium) in Stever Verkman's auction ending last night. Anyone care to express their thoughts re this sale, as opposed to the rather amazing heights newer card sales have achieved?

That amazingly beautiful card is several zeros past my price range. If I every buy a lottery ticket and win it would be the only stupid expensive card I would buy. Of course then I would have to get the rest of the set so it would not get lonely.:)
I'm surprised that it did not end higher as it is one of the nicest T210 Jacksons out there. The front is almost perfect. I was thinking $250,000-300,000, but I guess that the severe staining on the back could have deterred some buyers.

Can't disagree with either of the above. Should that card double in value just 3X in the next 24 years--a compound interest rate of merely 9% per year, it will be worth slightly over $1,600,000. Personally, I do not doubt that it will approach that figure. Interestingly, a guide I consider quite reliable indicates that in 1995, one in "Ex" condition could be had for just $3500-$4,000. Now where did I stash my time machine?!?!

I think without the back staining you could have added more than 100k to the final price. Just a guess....

Seems cheap to me as it was a beautiful JJ example. I think it was a great buy. I agree the stain probably kept a few people off of it. That card is the Honus Wagner T206 of my collecting world. My reprint will have to continue to make do though:D

Regarding the OP's original question which is a good one. The relation to prices newer cards have reached as opposed to the JJ T210 rookie is very interesting to me. Im not in the postwar market but I see what you are saying. Rose and Reggie Jackson rookies are going for comparable prices to this obviously more rare T card. To each his own I suppose. I dont really understand the whole current 50's/60's card craze.

That is the "problem" with the card. It is not his rookie card. His 1909 E90-1, which shows him with the Philadelphia Athletics was issued before his T210 card.

Not a rookie but the image is so much better than the no-nose heavy lipstick E90-1.

+1. I don't own the card, but I think it has the least eye appeal of any card capable of 5 figures.

Agreed...quite possibly the ugliest rookie card of any blue chip pre war player. If I owned one I'd have sold it a long long time ago!!!!!! I'll prefer a cj any day of the week!!!

I love the e90-1 Joe Jackson RC, the pose and color are fantastic to me. Much prefer the e90-1 rookie to the CJ, though I like the CJ, too.

The E90-1 Joe Jackson is a cool pose...if they just hadn't messed up his face so much it would be a great looking card.

I think the more likely scenario will be a "very" similar looking card will appear without this stain after a trip to dick towles and sell for a 100k more in a PSA holder in 24 months.
