View Full Version : August pickups

Scott Garner

I'll kick off the month of August with two neat pickups for my advanced Nolan Ryan collection:

The 1st item is the actual Alvin, TX Official Mayoral Proclamation for Nolan Ryan Hall of Fame Day on July 25, 1999. As many of you know, Nolan Ryan is the favorite son of Alvin, TX. This proclamation is literally one-of-a-kind and capped Nolan's amazing 27 year career in ML baseball. Truly an epic piece for my collection. Signed by Troy Lewis the acting Mayor of Alvin. This came to me by way of another advanced Nolan Ryan collector friend.

The 2nd item is a circa 1991 backlit Starter brand sign that measures approximately 18" x 18". This has always been one of my favorite advertising pieces featuring The Ryan Express that has eluded me..
This also came by way of a private collection. Only 2-3 of these signs are known to exist in the hobby, although there may be more that have never surfaced.

Thanks Ken, Mike & Mark!
It seems like the only really obscure items related to Nolan Ryan that I find these days originate from private collections and have never seen the light of day, so to speak.

I'm definitely happy to add them to my collection.

Very cool, Dave!

Not quite the same, but I picked up this vest because it is very high quality. My research tells me Marguerite Rubel was a designer in SF, starting in the 1940's. President Bush the first wore one of her coats to a Summit in 1991. The lablel in this vest dates it to the 1960s.

The hanger came from the Mayfair Inn in Sanford, Florida - the NY, and later SF, Giants used it as their Spring Training base.

1935 Boston Braves Season Pass Babe Ruth's Last Season

Possibly belonged to Eddie "Smoke" Stack former Big Leaguer who played from 1910 to 1914, or to another guy who shared his name. Also, has the facsimile signature of Boston Braves owner Emil Fuchs who strung Ruth along thinking he'd someday be named manager which Ruth later learned was not true and just on the team to put asses in the seats.

Never seen this one before, kinda neat.

Got a couple of things at the National for my early Red Sox collection....
- Unissued stock certificate, dated "190x"

- 1904 St. Louis Browns program vs. Red Sox. I love the cover on this, with the images of the Browns players. Program is not fully scored but notes a 2-0 Red Sox victory; the only 2-0 Red Sox victory in St. Louis was on August 12, a shutout by Cy Young!

Doubtful...

That same Figural batter with Boater-style Hat can be found on numerous small household goods of the day. I have a few that are attached to Napkin Rings, Pipe Stands, Business Card Holders, Letter Openers, and the like. The Dinner Bell fits right into that category of household goods.

That said.... Wonderful pickups by Bob and everyone else!

For me....FOR ME....this has got to be one of the Top 10 things I've ever found on ebay. It's a BOA money bag used to carry money from Candlestick Park. This thing is huge...27" x 17"...I guess pre-credit card, there would be a lot of cash after a game.

Rob- The body of the baseball player opens at the waist. There is also a football player that opens at the neck with just the head coming off. The ones I have seen have been described as candy dishes or holders. They are constructed like a bisque doll. I do know that there are very few of either type.

Lots of great pickups by everyone so far this month. Love all those early baseball memorabilia items you picked up Bob. Dave, some outstanding clothing/uniform items as well. I also love that SF Giants money bag, it is one of the most unique items I've ever seen posted here. What a month!

I have the same tray, Bob. Mine was issued to Juan Marichal. Marichal and Alston are both engraved next to their respective teams. There are 32 names, total. I wonder if there are only 32 trays out there? Is there an AL version as well?

71buc needs this. Besides being 1971, the Pirates had the most NL participants...Murtaugh, Stargell, Clemente, Ellis and Sanguillen.

P.S. my tray is much more tarnished. I sent it to a professional and even he couldn't do much with it.

The piece that just arrived and officially caps one the greatest months of collecting I have experienced. It's a scale paperweight commemorating the pennant of 32. The scarcity of this piece, combined with the form, and subject make it a Cubs/Figural collectors dream. It's quite substantial and the ball is just shy of official size. I acquired it in trade from a distinguished long time advanced Cubs collector and gave a grail level item from his long time want list in return. So it was a great day at his house as well:D

So it was a great day at his house as well:D RL]

Congrats Mike, a wonderful addition to your collection.

I posted this on the main board page August pick-ups, but realized I may get a better response here, I think this is where the photo collectors would hang out. I am not that knowledgeable on photos, but I am a big fan of Southern Association memorabilia. This is what I think it is:

Circa 1913 Chattanooga Lookouts, the photographer checks out, Wiles of Nashville, Tennessee. The Tennessee State Library has a collection of 60 items from Marvin Willard Wiles, photographer, who lived from 1883-1957, Wiles Photography Studio (Nashville Tennessee). The back looks like it was removed from a cabinet mount. The listing said it came from the Fred Graf estate, he played for Chattanooga from 1913-1920. I think Graf is the guy back row fourth from the right, and I think Kid Elberfeld is front row second from right. I think this is the 1914 team.

So, what do you think? Does this look like a type 1 photo? Can any of you identify the players (I suck at photo i.d., they all look like multiple players from the era). I'm just looking for opinions, thanks for any help with it.

(full disclosure, I lifted the e-bay image from the auction)

I just visited my good friend Gregg Packer top pick up this beautiful artwork he did on my Bob Feller signed home plate.

I bought the plate in an auction on the cheap. It was just so plain that I knew it would be a great candidate for Gregg's talent. We discussed a few different ideas but settled on this classic shot of Rapid Robert from 1937 ( I believe from the 3 stripes on the socks). The picture was black and white but we managed to find the proper uniform colors from a book he had. I really think it came out great. You see certain images in black and white so often that when someone puts it in color it looks like something completely unseen.

Very cool. Feller was a great representative and advocate for the game. While his autograph is so common due to how prolific a signer he was, I never tire of seeing his signature and it reminds me of what a great player and guy he was.

Thanks Dan. I have no idea who used it. I'm fairly confident it's from 1955. No well known names on the team so I'd guess any of them could have used it.
