Note the PSA 2.5?
I have looked and looked and see no difference between it, front or back, from the 6's I also purchased from the same seller.
I got it on the cheap, and fully realize the saying now, "Buy the card, not the slab" :D

It is better centered than the 6's but it does have a tilt. Is that what makes it a 2.5 or is there likely something there I can't see?

Either way, pretty happy with these cards and what I paid for them. :D

..if the back is off badly enough to rate a " PSA 7 OC " or "PSA 7 MC" but the original submission had that little box " no qualifiers" checked off , then presto you're a 5 instead of a 7 Q . Soooooo , the big question is : what's the reverse look like ? Anywhere near 90-10 ?

..gorgeous card ; congrats , you got a deal.

It looked great in the pictures, so I picked up this card to add to my pile of high graded 1972 high numbers for trade, but in hand I can't for the life of me figure out why it has a 'ST' qualifier…

240024

There are no visible stains whatsoever. The only thing I can see is when it is tilted in the light, there is a very small amount of wax residue on the front. Something that could be wiped away in less than a tenth of a second with some panty hose. Is that the "stain" they're referring to?? I always assumed 'ST' referred to a highly visible, darkened stain that was soaked into the card itself, not something nearly invisible that could easily be eliminated. Am I wrong? Wow.

Yes, wax residue will get a ST qualifier. Nice grab.

Fantastic cards, guys!

I don't get the Aaron being a PSA 5, either. Irv is right, that 5 looks nicer than his 7 (not to disparage his 7 at all; it's a nice card, too). I'm going to withhold ripping PSA mercilessly until I see the back of the card, but I really think PSA has gone off the deep end.

If I were a PSA grader, or exec, and I saw those two cards side to side, with the grades given, I'd be embarrassed. Hell, I'd be embarrassed that the first card we ever graded was a major F up, but that's just me. "Little" things like consistency, personal convictions/ethics are important to me.

And that Dan-dee Mick is gorgeous!

I hear what you are saying about PSA. I have similar thoughts, trust me, but in their defense, mine is an older slab and from what I have seen, PSA is a lot tougher than what they use to be.

What was the first card they graded?

KCRfan1
08-03-2016, 10:34 PM
The first card graded was the Gretzky Wagner. Even though the card was trimmed, they still gave the card an 8. I recommend reading the book, The Card

I understand that :); that's why I said "if I were a PSA grader", I'd be embarrassed. Their inconsistency is awful. What they graded a 7 not real long ago is now less appealing than what they give a 5 now.

That is a black mark on them, if you ask me. Their wild inconsistency now makes cards with older slabs less valuable.

A little bit of variance is ok, but the difference between those two cards is staggering, and completely unacceptable.

There was some controversy over the Wagner back in the day, about whether it had been trimmed or not.

The owners of the card needed a way to " authenticate " it, and PSA was a fledging company that had just started up. PSA needed to make a " splash ", to get a name for themselves and what better way to do that than to grade the hottest card in the market.

For the owners , the card HAD to grade numerically. This would justify the price paid and help remove doubt about the credibility of the card.

For PSA, delivering a numerical grade to the card would be a positive for the hobby and THEMSELVES. People would be reluctant to submit cards for grading if the very first card graded, was deemed authentic or trimmed. Hence, negative news. PSA took off after the press coverage in the news and hobby industry after the very favorable grade the Wagner received.

This was a huge shot in the arm for a hobby that was on the decline.

Like it or not, this was great for the hobby and certainly PSA.

Also 5's can have very hard to see wrinkles and starts of creases. Twist the card around in the light and see if you can find any of that. I have a '55 Bowman Kaline like that - corners look NM or better. That's not something that bothers me, a 5 is a 5...but I can see where it might bother some folks.

Right in that it was the first graded card, but it's been re-holdered at least once. The 0's in the original slab had the slashes through them a la dot-matrix style. The slabs you still occasionally see like that are the oldest ones. My guess is it was probably re-holdered before Ken what's his name that owns the Diamondbacks bought it.

Only my 2nd post-war pickup since starting to collect again like 6 years back. Love this card. Can't see why it isn't a 6.5 or so, but don't care too much about the grade. Nice card. A 4.5 that looks like a 6 or better likely has some hidden wrinkle or other problem that comes out in grading under the black lights, but isn't readily noticeable otherwise. I agree with you, don't worry about the grade. I wonder how many cards in the 1980's that were honestly called NM or in that range later got stabbed as VG or something because of issues known only to the world of grading. I understand the purpose of grading, but cards like that are proof that it isn't the end-all, be-all I think. At the end of the day you can enjoy a card for it's presentation value and eye appeal over and above a technical grade.

John, I'm not exactly sure how this is germane to the point I was making. It's late, so maybe I'm missing something. Or, perhaps I'm just being dense. Again, here's the comment I was responding to:

Oh, I know all about the trimmed Wagner, but I thought they were in business a while before they graded that one.

My only aim was to produce a picture of the graded card. A re-slabbed PSA maintains its original serial number.

BTW, I know what the original slabs look like. ;) I selected this particular picture for the sake of expediency. The other pictures I found of the Wagner were much larger; I didn't feel like messing with resizing code, or reducing the picture size in Photoshop, and uploading it again.

Right in that it was the first graded card, but it's been re-holdered at least once. The 0's in the original slab had the slashes through them a la dot-matrix style. I don't know BCCG well nor do I collect graded cards. However, I'll share two opinions.

1. Any Aaron RC is a great pickup!

2. The card definitely wouldn't get anything close to a 6 from PSA! (Unless a really big customer submitted it.)

Thanks Jason ! I know the grade from BCCG is crap I was more concerned with
Authenticity . I assumed since it was Beckett that at the very least the authenticity would be something they check the same way they do with the regular grading to make sure it is unaltered .

Please options wanted ! I never bought a card that was graded by BCCG .

Should that card not be graded in a BVG slab instead?

I don't want to assume anything, but I believe BCCG slabs are for modern cards ?

At this time, BCCG is only able to grade cards of standard size and thickness. For vintage cards (1980 and older) the book value (ungraded price based on the Beckett price guide) can not be more then $300 in value if you wish to have the card graded by BCCG.

Beckett Vintage Grading services is the way to have a vintage card graded. The service recognizes the difference in production technologies between modern and pre-1981 cards, especially in the condition of the cards' surface and edges. Cards produced earlier than 1981 are generally recognized as "vintage" cards by most dealers and collectors.

Is that a pin hole? (Top right corner looking at it)

Nice card either way, but if that is a pin hole, I believe the best you'll get is a 1?

That is a good question, which I cannot answer because I didn't see it until after dropping my mail at the post office this morning. But yes, if it's a pin hole, a 1 will be coming my way.

I am hopeful that it is something on the scanner, because I did take a pretty good look at that corner at various angles. I have made worse mistakes, though.

ETA: It shows on the seller's scan too, so it may very well be a pin hole. Ugh.

Hopefully, and it if is a card you wanted badly, I wouldn't let it bother you as it is hardly noticeable, imo.

Good luck. :)

Was it mentioned by the seller? If not, you may have a case for the card not being as described if you want to go that route?

Sinker Slider
08-12-2016, 08:06 AM
No it wasn't mentioned. But it's a nice enough card that I'll probably just bust it out of its case, eat the grading fee, and include it in my ungraded collection if it turns out to be a pin hole, as now seems likely (see edit).

ETA: I looked at a bunch of others online and it is almost certainly a recurring print defect. They pretty much all have a spot there.

http://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w185/larrytipton/Scan%202_2.jpeg (http://s176.photobucket.com/user/larrytipton/media/Scan%202_2.jpeg.html)

Then I purchased "The Julie" collection, and also a '64 Topps World Series card with a '64 Bazooka stamp of Elston Howard afixed

Best find of the day a trio of 1964 Topps Beatles cards. Shari writes:

"Ella isn't he a doll?"
"Ella Here keep this & think of me everytime I get a double I will give it to you".
"Ella Please never give up your dreams and always remember me"

I know it's a PD but why would anyone put a pin in the right corner of a card? It would just kind of dangle instead on being straight for display. I've had pinholes in cards but usually in the center somewhere.

I wondered the same thing but noticed what looked like a hint of another pinhole on the left side too.

I have seen pics of pinholes in all sorts of places but thought maybe the previous owner liked to hang his cards at a 45 degree angle?

John, please accept my apologies. In retrospect, I didn't even need to say that. I see that you were just providing additional information. I could have just said "thank you", and acknowledged that you were posting something that could benefit the OP (or others) down the road.

I didn't mean for my comment to come off as being snotty, but it sure looks like it did. Thank you for chiming in. :)

Stache - I would think it's "germane" in that I was giving you some additional information on the slab you posted a picture of. I'm glad that you knew all of that already.

After looking for quite some time, I was able to score a '54 Kaline last night in the Memory Lane auction. I got it for $532 + BP = $638. While it is not the $450-$500 card that it was 6-8 months ago, based upon recent trends, I was pleasantly surprised to have landed it. What was more surprising was that it was only 4 bids and I placed the winning bid over a week ago.

There was one on Ebay (a 6) that sold on Thursday for $720 and one that will end soon that is heading in that direction.

My upgrades are now down to just a couple and Kaline was a big hurdle. PWCC sold one for $1400+ last month and it might have been a PWCC exception/higher end example, so happy that I got it where I got it and maybe a sign that things are starting to settle?

I guess it is all relative because I consider myself a low budget collector when I look at the Cobb's and Ruth's and Mantles that abound with the collectors on this site. (Not to mention collections like Al's and Ted Z's...)

Keep at it, collect what you love and don't get discouraged. I keep reminding myself what the pastor teaches (and it is a hard lesson). These 2 arrived today. I have been trying to watch my spending lately but I got caught up in the "I want it" bidding war and spent more than I intended on the Dimaggio.

Since I won the Dimaggio card, I thought I may as well see if I can win another off the seller and ended up winning this Frank Smith card as well.

I am not disappointed with my Dimaggio win, as, other than the top left corner, the card is in real nice shape and I did get it quite a bit cheaper than what they normally go for.

Sober, succinct, and right on. As a fellow minister of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, I needed to hear that. I have come to realize what I do still have is a blessing from God, and what I "gave away" of my collection by selling to support some missionaries and ministries 30 years ago is a reflection of the famous words of martyred missionary Jim Elliot, "He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain that which he cannot lose."

God bless and be with you, brother.:) ---Brian Powell

First few words are copied and pasted from the FB forum, sorry.

Just got back from vacation. I go to the same place every August and there's a card shop nearby, run by an older guy out of his house. My boys and I always visit and my favorite thing to do is sift through his "M.A.S.H. Box." It's full of beaters, but priced accordingly, with lots of star power. It's a fun escape from graded cards, which are mostly what I collect these days. Notes below each photo.

http://i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa463/dbesse27/52T%20Jensen.jpg

Of my new additions, I'm most excited about the card above. For a few weeks now, I've had the itch to add my first 52 Topps. Don't know why one hadn't fallen into my lap before now. Happy to add this Jensen.

http://i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa463/dbesse27/vintage%20baseball4.jpg

Bill White is a personal favorite. Possibly the most underrated player of the 60's. Got these 4 cards for a total of $3

http://i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa463/dbesse27/vintage%20baseball5.jpg

I also love vintage league leader cards when they're chock full of HOFers. Got these 5 cards for $3

http://i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa463/dbesse27/73%20Kelloggs%20lot.jpg

Love Kellogg's cards and thought it was interesting that these weren't "3D". Turns out this was the only year Kellogg's didn't use that effect, because they went with a different manufacturer (Panographics). These were 20 cents each.

Like I said, it's fun sometimes to throw condition out the window and buy cheap copies of iconic cards or iconic players.

Just happened to be surfing E-Bay when I noticed it, threw in a bid, got outbid, threw in another or 2 and ended up winning it, surprisingly. :)

Nice Jack Jensen, btw. That is another card I have been eyeing. (Yankee cards always carry a premium)

Favorite card so far ! Was able to pay it off early this month :-)

Nice card, Johnny. Love the 56 version my self!

Hit a cool milestone yesterday with the day's mail...got this 69 Topps Fergie that completes my 3rd 1969 Topps set. In my quest to upgrade my first set I was able to put together another VGEX set, and then the quest to upgrade that set let to another VG set..:D This Fergie (after I freed it from the PSA bondage) replaces the card in my 2nd set which dropped that card to my 3rd set which is now COMPLETE.

My only question now is do I upgrade my 2nd set to EXNM and create a 4th set? My wife thinks I'm crazy but I have to believe I have folks here that quite understand...

Everyone is different, but I think it might not be a bad idea to maybe listen to her once in a while. Harliduck. :D

Starting back to work on my '65 Topps set. I have some commons on the way, but I like these two rookies...
